Barth ta Beautiful.
Ti?? followiu*? ^octu (csv? thc ??s^r Xcrk
Keening Post) was written by tb? young
daughter (fifteen rears old) of a prominent
merchant in New York:
When the morning star is setting.
And thc East is flushed with light,
When the rising sun announces
Thc departure of tho night,
Earth is beautiful!
When the sun-set fires arc gloaming
O'er the tops of distant hills,
And the yellow rays are streaming
On the merry mountain rills,
Earth is beautiful!
When thc dusky twilight deepens,
And the shadows longer grow,
Or the moonlight, pale and flitting,
Bathes in silver all below,
Earth is beautiful!
In thc windy, wild March weather,
When tho snows are all departing,
When tho birds begin to twitter
And the crocuses are starting,
Earth is beautiful!
In the broad and sunny meadow,
When the summer sun is high,
When the tree-tops all are quivering,
And beneath the cattle lie,
Earth is beautiful!
In the misty Indian Summer,
When th?; harvest days are o'er,
Win n the leaves are rod and yellow,
And the tlowrcts are no muri1,
Earth is beautiful!
When thc cold and frosty weather
Of the winter time is here,
And the pure and drifting snow-wreaths
Are decking autumn's bier,
Earth is beautiful!
In the spring-time or the winter,
In the summer or tho fall,
Bv the sea-side, in the meadow,
"Or within the forest tall,
Earth is beautiful!
"Brick'" Pomeroy on Mosquitoes.
"Brick" Pomeroy of tho LaCrosse
(Wis.) Democrat gives the following os
his experience in getting mosquitoes
intoxicated. "Josh Billings" can't
beat it :
MOSQUITOES ON A BENDER.
Night before last, in order to sleep,
we placed a piece of raw "beefsteak on
a -plate at tho hoad of our bed. In
the morning it was sucked by the
mosquitoes as dry as an old sponge,
and our skins saved at least two thou?
sand perforations. All about thc room
in the morning were mosquitoes,
plethoric with blood, loaded till they
could not fly. "We killed a few, but
the job was too sanguinary', so we left
them to their feast.
Last night, in order to get even
with the screaming devils, wo steeped
half a pound of beefsteak in some old
rye whiskey, and left it on a plate near
thc bcd. Nothing uko being hospita?
bly inclined. In ten minutes after
the light was extinguished, a swarm of
these backbiting bill-posters mudo an
advance movement. One of them ca?
ressed us sweetly on the nose-ho sent
in his bill-there was a slap-a dead
mosquito ! Soon we heard ;i tremen?
dous buzzing about the whisky soaked
beef. The entire mosquito family
came singing in, and such an opera
good Lord deliver us ! But they did
not disturb us with bites, we fell
asleep to bo awakened in ten minutes
by the worst mosquito concert ever
editor, mortal, devil, angel, divine.
Dutchman, or any other man listened
to.
We raised a light, ?md the greatest
show of tho season was there to be
seen. Every mosquito was drunk as
a blind fiddler, and such an uprourous
night as the long-billed whelps had,
never was seen before this side of
selah ! The worst antics ! Some
were playing circus on thc plate. One
big fellow, with a belly like Falstaff,
full of blood and whiskey, was dancing
juba on the Bible, while a fat friend
of his tribe lay on her back beating
tlie devil's dream on an invisible tam?
borine with ono hind leg ! Two more
were wrestling on the footboard of
the bed, each with his bill stuck fast
to the timber. Another was ticing the
legs of our pants into a bow knot to
tie about the neck of Auna Dickinson,
which hangs against the washstand,
while another red-stomached customer
was trying to stand on his head in tin;
washbowl.
All over thc room were drunken
mosquitoes. One long-billed, gaunt
representative, was trying to ram the
mucilago b >ttlefull of newspaper clip?
pings. Another chap was drilling a
holt; through a revolver handle and
singing "My Mary Ann," while ano?
ther was limping across the window?
sill in search ol' ln sh air, to the agoni?
zing tune ol' -tramp-tramp -tramp!
One little ram of a skeei was trying
to jam the cock out of (! an. Butler's
eye with a tooth-brush, as his picture
hung beside that of Kid, the pirate,
and a few other inicies. Anothei
drunken statesman <>? tho mo squib
family, reminded us of Zach. Chand?
ler and was talking Russian t<> a lot oi
drunken companions as they lay in :
bea]) on a plate, while another sat Ol
the. handle of a Bowie-knife, double,]
up with crain}) in the stomach, an<
trying to untie his tail with Iiis bill
which seemed like Lincoln's back
.j ^7?r.__--j!*-_ -?
bone "when Anna Dickinson said it
wanted stiffening. He was a sick
looking skeeter, and died in three
minutes after we saw him, her, or it,
as the case may be. Two others took
a bath in the inkstand. Another one,
with a bill like the devil's narrative,
was trying to wind our watch with a
pen-wiper, while another had just
died as he was sitting on the rim of a
dish in the room, trying to chant
" Mother, I've come home to die !"
Poor skeeter. A nice skeeter, ' ' but
'twas a pity he drank." An old vete?
ran with a paunch full of 'alf and 'alf
-blood and whiskey-sat on the table
reading Les Miserables, while his wife
was under the table trying to mend
her broken wing with a limpsy tooth?
pick. She looked disgusted. Another
one combed his hair with a paper
of pins, tied a piece of white paper
about his neck, pasted a five cent in?
fernal revenue on his rump, and died
like a loyal citizen. His last words
were :
"Tell tho Traitors all around you, Ac., Ac."
Another drunken scamp has just
started out of thc window for John
B. Gough, or a stomach pump. A
worse behaved set of hummers wc
never saw. They have acted fearful.
About two thousand lie about dead,
but sadness seemed not to break in
upon their hilarious rioting upon
blood and whiskey. Half a dozen of
them sat on our new hat playing draw
poker, usingworm lozenges forchecks,
while one of them got clean busted
by making a fifty dollar blind good
on a lour Hush which didn't fill ! He
will be apt to wear cotton socks next
winter, and keep away from church
on collection days.
Another sat on thc top of a brandy
bottle reading Baxter's Call to the
Unconverted, while his partner lay
dead at his feet, evidently forced to
close doors by the failure of Ketchum
?c Son, of Now York ! Six others
were trying to hang one that looked
like a Copperhead to the corner of a
match safe, but as they were drunk
and he sober, it is not sah? to bet on
his being dangled. They have eaten
the beef-drunk the blood and whis?
key-drilled a plate full of holes-and
on the centre table organized a Son
of Malta lodge, using a five cent shin
plaster for a blanket, in the act enti?
tled the "Elevation of Man."
Another red-bellied leader of the
Miss Keeter family had a battalion of
drunken bummers on tho edge of a
spittoon, watching him jam a fur over?
coat into his left ear. He was foolish
-foolish enough for brigadier-gener?
al or a member of Congress. A little
j cuss with black legs, crimson stomach
j and double-jointed bill, was vomiting
! in a satin slipper, while his wife, a
: sickly looking lady of her tribe, was
j gnawing at tho bed post, thinking it
; a bologna. Another one, evidently
i an ld maid, sut under the sofa milk?
ing a cut, while lier sister was crowd?
ing .i pair of woolen drawers into her
? waterfall, singing in a.subdued strain :
"Como rest in this bosom!"
i We have applied for a season ticket
! - front scat.
Another ono, with a certificate of
j marriage over his head, in the shape
of a welt the size of a candle-mould.
? was dancing a fandango with two mos
; quito virgins on a watch crystal,
! while a deacon in one of their churches
sat playing old sledge with a cork?
screw, to see which should go for a
gin cock-tail. An artistic delegate
was standing on his head in a cham?
pagne tumbler, one hind leg run
through his under jaw, while with the
other lie was pointing out the road to
Bichmond to a lot of skeets still
drunker than himself, which were
sitting dog fashion on the pillow. We
should say it was a gay party-quietly
so.HJTalk about shows, concerts, dog
fights, amputations, cireusscs, negro
funerals, draw poker, sparking, or
other amusements, there is nothing
to bc compared to a Hock of mosqui?
toes on a bender. If you don't be?
lieve it, fix them i'.]) a piece of bocf
i steak soaked with whiskey, and laugh
youl- sides sore at tin1 antics the drtuik
I cn warblers cut.
