The New Orleans Picayune, in noticing certain disparaging remarks of Mr. Benjamin, says of him : Mr. Benjamin was always known and respected in this community as a man of great liberality and generosity of character, as free from avarice or mercenary motives and habits as any prominent man in this communiiy. His extraordinary talents, wonderful industry and great ambition for politi? cal and professional distinction, al? ways secured him a largo and most lucrative practice, and every high station he ever aspired to. j Despite these great advantages, and in his large receipts from his profes? sion, he was never rich or even easy in his circumstances. His immense resources from his own industry and talents were expended in the support and advancement of his relatives and friends, and in a liberal and generous mode of life. So far from loving his ease and comfort, or addicting him eelf t? luxury and dissipation, he was, perhaps, the most laborious, industri? ous and ten ?crate man, who ever at? tained eminence at our bar, and in public affairs. Starting in this city as a friendless youth, he worked his way by theer industry and talent, from a notary's clerk, to the very highest place at our bar, when that bar was second to none other in the country for talent, learning and elo? quence. In all that time we never heard a mean, small, or illiberal act ascribed to him. In embarking in politics, and especially in so perilous a moment as the late rebellion, few men made such great sacrifices as Mr. Benjamin. He had no estate, but his professional talents and experience could command him at any time, and at any place, a splondid income. His practico before the Supreme Court of thc United States alone was worth $20,000 a year. This he abandoned, together with his hoi .io and library, expensively furnishod in Washington City, and also his large and lucrative practice in this city, in order to fill an office in the Confederate Government, the emoluments of which would not pay his household, expenses for one month. if Mr. Benjamin was the selfish and mercenary man he is de? scribed, this was certainly a course which could hardly be reconciled with that great shrewdness, cunning and ability, which his enemies and de? tractors ascribe to him. A STRIKING TRUTH.-In his recent speech in Indianapolis, Gov. Morton said : "To say that such men (the late slaves) * * * are qualified tor the exercise of political power, is to make the strongest pro-slavery argument 1. ever heard. It is to pay the highest compliment to the institu? tion of slavery.'" Alore truth could scarcely be crowd? ed into so few linos. It' the negroes of the South, but yesterday emanci? pated from slavery, are fitted for the exercise of thc lights of the elec? tive franchise, the untold phillipics against the "barbarism" and "degen? eration" of slavery fall to the ground as the veriest rhetorical humbugs. [Jackson ( Miss.)
