iVCISOE T uT ? A "PTY A NEW THEORY OF DIETETICS.-Dr. Erasmus Wilson, quite celebrated in England, lias been lecturing very extensively, and finally published several lectures, to prove that the great body of the yoting En gish gentry are annually starred into im? becility and death by the insufficient quality of .their food. Breakfasts of j tea and toast he does not approve of; and for growing youth, instead of meat once a day at dinner, he thinks three times a day would be none too much. Instead of a diet two-thirds vegetable to one-third of animal food, he would have it two-thirds animal to one-third vegetable. He speaks of this chiefly as a means of preventing disease. The most vital organs, apart from the digestive tube, are, he says, the brain, the lungs and the heart. If these are not supplied with a sufficiency of whole? some nutriment, there are always ele? ments of disease enough lurking round to attack and destroy them. We all know, for instance, that the best safeguard against most fevers and miasmatic diseases is a vigorous state of health; and in a Southern climate, to KO out of doors before taking breakfast, is, therefore, justly consi? dered dangerous. In like manner, in the North, where diseases of the lungs prevail, cod liver oil, the richest cream, and, indeed, a generous diet, is generally the best medicine. Thc muscular fibre of meat, rather than the fat or a vegetable food, is thc great secret of even thc Banting sys? tem. Nor is there any doubt but that the healthy action of thc brain and heart depend on plenty of good nutriment. FEMALE SOCIETY. - We endorse every word of John Randolph about ladies' society. Read what he says, young man, and act accordingly : "You know my opinion of female society. Without it we should degen? erate into brutes. This observation applies with tenfold force to young men and those who are in the prime of manhood. For, after a certain time in fife, the literary man makes a shift (a poor one, I grant) to do with? out the society of ladies. To a young man nothing is important as a spirit of devotion (next to his Creator) to some amiable woman, whose image may occupy his heart, and guard it from pollution, which besets it on all sides. A man ought to choose a wife, as Mrs. Primrose did her wedding gown, for qualities that "wear well." One thing at least is true-that if matxumouy has its cares, celibacy has no pleasures. A Newton or a more eminent scholar may find enjoyment in mere study, a man of literary taste can receive in books a powerful auxiliary, but a man must have a bosom friend, and children around him, to cherish and support the dreariness of age." THE FITNESS OF THINGS.-Did any? body ever reflect how living in such a country as Australia, for instance, must upset all one's established ideas about the. fituess of things ? What? ever previous experience of the points of the compass a man may have bad, is hero reversed. The sun no longer shines from the southern half of the heavens, but from the northern. The old rule in the school geographies, .' Turn your face to the sun, and you will have the West at your right hand, and the East at your left," must be expunged from Iiis memory. The Australians go "down North" to spend the winter, and come "up South" during the hot summer mouths. The first strawdiorries and early potatoes come from "down North." The needle of the compass points toward tho South, and the North Star is no longer a symbol of steadiness. In short, the North and the South ex? change places, and the Australian poets must sing odes to "the sunny North" und "tho icy South." ? An inventor and engineer who re? cently died in England, had collected at his own residence a large number of ingenious automatic devices. The doors opened as you approached them and closed after you had entered ; the water came unbidden into the basins ; when the gas was lighted the shutters closed ; a self-acting ther? mometer prevented the temperature from rising or falling above or below certain fixed points. Even the gates of his stable yard opened of them? selves when lie drove through, and closed again without slamming.
