It says, "two stout and frowzy viragos abusing each other in the street, do not make i a delectable sight for respectable men or women; indeed, the spectacle is one to make a decent man blush that ?e belongs to tlic same species with taem. Yet the flaming eyes, the nasty words, the matted locks and ragged clothing, the whole aspect of rage; and fiuy have a charm for the more brutal pars of mankind, who cry on the com? batants, and are the more delighted the forcer their rage and the more duna ?ag their blows. The sutlers and t\mp-followers of Grant's army might s well claim to have led it, as these fejows claim tf> have lcd the na? tion. 'lAioy marched with it-that if true-buVfhoy often grumbled at thc General, tod' their chief occupation was to pie-Vip the crumbs that wert dropped by^he fighting men." Judge Hovard, Democratic candi date for the ??overnorship ot Maine says: \ "The respect ye States are the pil lars on which tty structure of the Ge neral Governmei* rests, and as thes> are weakened or destroyed, the struc? ture must totter V foll. The per sonal, social and poetical rights of al must be guarded ?ad protected, bu these rights are to bondjusted, mainly by the respective States, leaving tb General Government Bupreme witlii its sphere." \ NN-^ "I am not, and never Lave been, i favor of making voters or jurors t negroes, nor of qualifyiny them t hold offices or to intermarry with th white people; and I will sayyin add tion to this, that there is atohysie difference between the white ai\d blat races, which I believe will forev-r fo bid the two races living together e; terms of social and political eqndit, And inasmuch as they cannot so \\ while they do remain together t\* must be the position of superior a^ inferior; and I, as much as any otb man, am in fayer of having the snj rior position assigned to the wh race, to which I belong."
