The rebels still held the place, sus?
taining a daily cannonading from the
national troops, \ o had failed to in?
flict much damage, only three persons
having been killed and a few houses
damaged.
It was thought that so long aa the
rebels could obtain a supply of ammu?
nition and provisions, they could hold
out.
A vessel recently ran in with a sup?
ply of provisions, although the port is
blockaded by two steamers.
Provisions were getting short in the
city. There waa only seven days* sup?
ply on hand.
The foreign consuls attempted to
mediate between the belligerents, but
without success.
The lives of the American and Eng?
lish consuls had been frequently
threatened by the rebels, owing to
their supposed sympathy with the
cause of Gearard.
A Lima BJUHCAB GAME.-The
Boston radicals have addressed an
elaborate communication to the Presi?
dent on the question of reconstruc?
tion. The document is signed by a
large number of the leading men of
Boston, among whom is Thoopb.ilus
Parsons, its probable writer. The
object of this movement is, ostensibly,
to induce the President to put the re?
claimed States upon a lengthened
.probation before admitting them into
fellowship in the Union. The policy
of this course is ably argued, audit?
. necessity,'in view of the intractable
spirit shown by the late rebels, is set
lorth in strong terms. But the real
object of the radicals is very easily
discerned through this nicely-worded
letter to the President. Their object
ia to argue this question before the
people, with a view of gaining
strength enough in the next Congress
to prevent ex-rebel State members
from taking their seats, and by this
means compel the said States to adopt
the negro-su?xage doctrine in order to
obtain representation in Congress.
This is the great end that the radicals
are now figuring? for, and they will
leave no means untried that promises
. to facilitate ita' accomplishment. As
the matter now utanda, it is quito
doubtful whether they can muster
votes enough to reject the new mem?
bers, upon the negro suffrage issue
alone, and hence their desperate at?
tempt* to make proselytes. It re?
mains to be seen what effect thia last
dodge will have toward the desired ;

ry, the Chicago Tribune, has some
remarks which are less accurate than
usual' We quote from its columns:
' "Gen. Lee, we understand, has ap
, plied for pardon in a voluminous do?
cument denyinjr his guilt-fhat is,
denying that he ls a proper case for a
pardon. On the other hand, it is
largely claimed by Lee's Northern
friends that the terms of his surrender
to Grant amount to a pardon, and
shield him from all punishment by;
the Government."
Gen. Lee's application . is not a vo?
luminous document, but avery brief
one, containing only some forty or
fifty words. It says nothing about
his gnilt or innocence, either affirma?
tively pr negatively.? ?or have we
ever heard of any of Lea's friends who
claimed that his surrender involved
pardon. The utmost that any one
has ever claimed about it is. that it
guarantees his personal security so
long as he obeys the laws in force at
the place where he resides. But thia
ia not pardon, because it leaves bim
without any civil rights, and liable to
trial and punishment for his great po?
litical and military crimes, should he
ever commit any infraction of the
laws in question.

after the surrender , of Gen. Lee, his

time, repaired to the White House,
determined, notwithstanding the late?
ness of the season, to attempt to make
a crop of corn. Three young men,
formerly of his command, attended
him. A German and- an Irishman and
'two freedmen were subsequently add?
ed to their force. They began plough?
ing on the 29th of April, and have
made a splendid crop of corn, esti?
mated'at 1,500 bushels.
Oliver Waters, of Cleveland County,
North Carolina, a whiskey peddler,
was killed in an affray at Chester,
South Carolina, a day or two since, by
a man 'named Kistler. '

TRAGEDY IN TEXAS.-W. O. Paine
of Cypress City, about six month
ago, married a daughter of Mrs. Deck
