Fair copies ot any ! document executed with neatness ?iud de ' irpaich, August 1 I Sonic interesting experiments have just been marie afc L'Orient, <m board the French frigate Coligny, the object of which is to utilize the electric light at sea. By ricans of a submarine reflector, tue water was illuminated to a great depth, so that it was possible to look down from the deck and see the fish, attracted by tim light, swim? ming round the lamp as if in an aqua? rium. A kind of diving-bell, with a larg glass eye on one side, and ar? ranged to supply air to a diver, was also let-down to a .depth of thirty eight fathoms. Ivy means of this apparatus, it will be easy to inspect submarine constructions, to tish coral, &c., and recover wTccked property. Signals were likewise exchanged, by means of the electric light, between the Coligny and tho Semaphore off Belle Isle. These? different npplica-, tiona of the electric light were made, in the presence of a military commis? sion, by the inventor, ]\L Bazin, civil engiiioer, of Angers, and were found to give satisfactory results. MIXED METAPHOR.-A most amus? ing iustance ot this very common violation of tho rules of taste occurred recently in tho Court of Conciliation, (or Court of Aggravation, tis an indig- ? nant lady friend who had lost her suit there-called it.) Ono of the learned counsel, in his address to the Court, perpetrated the following: "The gen? tleman is ?ill wrong, your houors there is great cry und little wool-but he hus the wrong /?/'/ by tire earl" The gravity of tho. bench was de? stroy rd. This Ls almost equal to" Sir Boyle Roche's famous one in the House of Commons-"Mr. Speaker, I smell a rut; 1 seo bim'flying through the .-ir; T will vet nip bim in ibo bm\," Sir Boyle onco said, urging an agri? cultural un-usure, that "it would moke the barrel' bills fruitful valleys." The great fair of Lcipsic this year attains its hundredth anniversary, bavin;; been established in 17G5. Be? fore that year, the fair was visited by numerous booksellers from all parts of Germany, but Frankfort was then the great emporium of the book trade, especially for foreigners. At present, the German booksellers send their books to their different correspond? ents ns tliey appear, and meet at Lcip? sic fair to balance the accounts' of sales during the year. ^ DEATH AND SUFFERING AT SKA.-Tho Liverpool Mercury, of the 17th ult., contains an account of the sinking in March last of the skip Sam Dunning, from Rangoon for Liverpool. Out of a crew of thirty-one men, only six survived. These survivors kept afloat on a raft for several days, enduring terrible sufferings. They had to eat leather belts and pitch out of thc seams, and to drink sea "water. CARD.
