Mr. Secretary McCulIoeh bas re? cently furnished a statement of the national debt, as it stood lnteen days ago. The amount then outstanding was $2,757,253,275. The debt bear? ing interest in coin is $1,108,622,641; on which the" interest is $64,521,837. The debt bearing interest in lawful money is $1,289,156,545, on which the interest is 874,740,630. The debt on which interest has ceased is $1, 527,120. The debt bearing no inte? rest is $357,906,069. The total inte? rest, both in coin and lawful money, is $139,262,468. The number of legal tender notes in circulation is $685, 236,269. The amount of fractional currency is $25,750,000. The amount of coin in the Treasury is $75,338,000. Total amount of coin and currency in the Treasury $116,739,632. Stupendous as this debt appears, there is nothing in its proportions to occasion apprehensions of cither pos? sible or -probable repudiation, if prompt and energetic steps could be taken to reduce our national expendi? tures. Of thc 1,000,000 troops who were under arms- in April, 700,000 have been mustered out of service; but between 250,000 and 300,000 are still und?r arms. The estimated ex? penses of the Government are still nearly $50,000,000 per month, or in round numbers $('00,000,000 per an? num. Indeed, it has been computed tin; expenses of the Government, from the 1st of July last to the 1st of Feb? ruary, 1866, will amount to $344,000, 000. The probable expenses of tho War Department are placed at $200, 000,000, and those *f the Navy at '$40,000,000, or $240,(K)0,000 for both branches of the service for six nuonths. Our receipts in that time, it is esti? mated, will not exceed $296,000.000, which amount falls short of meeting the expenses of the Government and t'ue interest on the national debt-to? gether nearly $40,000,000. From this it will be perceived that, as peace now prevails, the expenses of the army and navy might be easily reduced $70,000, 000, which 'would leave a handsonn? .surplus of $30,000,000 in the National Treasury on the 1st of February, 1866. THE COTTON* QUESTION TN ENGLAND. The London Times' correspondent .says that the cotton question is far from settled yet, and the great doubt as to the American production hinders ftil calculation. Before the war Eng? land paid ?38.000,000 a year for cot? ton, ol v?iich .?21,000,000 went to the United States. Now. for a half sup? ply, she pays i; early double that amount-say" ?00, OU. ?,000. China, Japan, India, from which so much was expected, ?ire practical . failures. Egypt does a little better, but not enough. If labor can be re-organized in the Sont li, America may again have the monopoly and supply the world. - The following heading from theNcNv York WorUL is a fair sample of tin record of crimes now being committed in all the large Northern cities: * The Criminal Era-Brutal Murdei hi the Nineteenth Ward-A ?Firemai: raesrly Decapitated-Two of the Assas ti ins Arrested-Escape of the Princi? pal-Proceedings at the Inquest- -Out rageons Highway Robbery in West? chester-Foot pads in the Suburbs Robbery und Attempted Murder o: two Citizens-The. bold Burglary ii Broadway-Arrest of the Thieves ant their Accomplices-A Day's Record o Crime in the Metropolis.
