THERMOMETRICAL. The following was the range of the ther? mometer yesterday, April 1st, at the drug Blore ot Mr. Joseph Blackmao, on the eouth Bide of Broad street : 8 A. M., 63; 10 A. M., 66; 12 M., 73; 2 P. M., 74; 4 P. M., 72; 6 P. M., 68; 8 P. M., 64. The report ot the signal service observer, In tills city, shows that the monthly mean of the thermometer for March was 63.6 degrees; ci the barometer 30.163 degrees. The total rain, fall was 3.05 Inches, the prevailing wind soi" h west, and the number of miles travelled by the wind was 6015. The highest point or the thermometer was 76 degrees, on the 19tb and 31st, and the lowest point 25 degrees on the 6th of the mooth. AMUSEMENTS. Aerothc Continent. Owing to the inclemency ot the weather there was but a meagre audience to witness toe first presentation of Mr. O. D. Byron's sensational drama of the above name, at the Academy of Music last evening. The chief characters were well taken, and the piece went off smoothly, Mr. Byron's impersona? tions belsg especially good, and gaining macy plaudits from the audience. "Ben McCul? lough," a California sensation, will be given to-nlghr, and to-morrow evening "Across the Continent" will be repeated. To-morrow a matinee for the ladles will be given, com? mencing at three o'clock, the admissions to this performance being only fifty cents for adults and twenty-five ceuts lor children. Colonel Hickman's Lecture. This treat, owing to the unpleasant weather, was postponed until this evening, when it will be delivered at Temperance Hall, on King street, opposite the Academy of Muslo. The lecturer was on hand, but the gathering of teetotallers did not warrant commencing bis remarks. He had, however, a lew words for those who were there, and these, judging by the frequent applause, were well received - THE COURTS. Supreme Court Notice. Smart Is expected to preside. -The Hon. Horatio Seymour, ex-Go ve ru or of New York, and the Hon. William Cullen Bryant, the venerable poet and editor of the New York Evening Post, are spending a few days in Charle o, on their return from a visit-to-Florida -The proprietor of the "flying horse" re? quests ns to contradict the statement of the seizure of that Interesting institution for an unpaid board bill. Those Interested tn the education of humanity are Invited to attend. -Throe negroes employed in unloading the steamship America, at Savannah, last Mon? day, were caught filling their pockets with goods Btolen from the hold ot the vessel. They each had tea deep pockets in the inside of their coats, and it ls believed that they had systematically carried on their thefts for a long time. -Holders of the bills of the Bank of the State looked bine yesterday In consequence of the adverse decision of the United States Supreme Court, and the bills which have been recently quoted as high as 45 and 46, suddenly tumbled to a mere nominal figure, with no buyers. The only hope ot the blilholders now la the ultimate redemption of these securities by the State government. THE APPROACH OF SUMMER. A Warm Day Yesterday-Preparation? by the Health Authorities fbtf the Heated Term. The month of Marion, which "came In like a Hon," iully verified the latter portion of the trite old adage by going out like the mildest of lambs last Monday, and the month ot April came In yesterday warm, bright and glowing, bringing a sudden foretaste of summer, making thick clothes a burden, and suggest? ing "flight from the busy haunts "where God's pure air ls doled In fiilul pi i tance to the sons ot men" to the seashore, the mountains, the woodlands, or any where that the breeze might penetrate and be enjoyed. Such flight, however, being impracticable to the average man, and rural retirement so early lu the sea? son being dreadfully unfashionable, there was no exodus from the olty, but during the ifternoon there was quite au unwonted assemblage of ladies and gentlemen on the Battery and In the White Point Garden, where the stiff ocean breeze proved very welcome. TowardB evening the breeze culminated in a violent squall, which Justified the danger signal which had been flying all day lrom the ofSce of the weather observer, and which brought a brisk shower ol rain with' some thunder asd lightning. The meteorologists are divided in their prog? nostications of the coming Bummer, and have evidently been puzzled by their observations ! during the unparalleled weather of last win? ter. The general opinion appears to be, how? ever, that tte summer will be long, hot and I dry. The warm weather of yesterday ls not, I ol course, presumed to be the opening of summer, and Indeed lt appears very probable that there will be a cold snap at about the time of full moon, on the 12th instant, bat the savana of the weather bureau at V/ashlngton, Dr. Draper, the well-known meteorologist of New York, and the health officers of thia and ' other cities unite In the opinion that the un precedented cold of last winter will be fol? lowed by unusually prolonged and fervent heat this summer, as has frequently been the case in former years. Io view of this probability, lt will be Inter estlc-g to know that the health authorities ol the city, whose labors last year resulted In Charleston's exhibiting at the close of the season the cleanest bill of health of any city in the South, are making timely and ample preparations for maintaining the publtc health during the coming season. The sanitary con? dition of the city ls reported to be excellent, a thorough system of sanitary inspection hav? ing been enforced during the winter months under the general direction of Dr. George S. Pelzer, the city registrar, by Captain Minott, and the officers and men of his police force. The olly inspectors, Messrs. Lucaa and Fergu? son, have also worked hard to put the city in good condition, and the upper wards es? pecially are now In better order than they have ever been before. A new drain has b?en built through John street, from Meeting street to the Coming street drain, all the drains, diagonals, dec, have been thoroughly cleaned, and the public and private premises throughout the city have been carelully Inspected and put In good and cleanly oonditlon. A large supply ol disin? fectants are to be purchased lor the public use, Fr. Pelaer having received proposals from different Arms In this city and New York for supplying about ten thousand pounds of chloride or lime, and several barrels of sul? phate ot zinc, sulphate of Iron and carbolic acid, which will be delivered by or before the first proximo. These disinfectants will be left at the several depots established last Bum? mer for free distribution to the citizens, and lt ls also proposed to establish a number of other depots so as to make the supplieB SB convenient of access 2.1 possible, and leave no excuae for neglecting to make a free use bf the disinfectants. 4: REWARD OF MERIT. The City Council last evening agreed to fur? nish the Pioneer Steam Fire Engine Company with a new englne-honse in place of the pre I sent dilapidated structure used by them on Market street. This building Is without a ball for the meetings of the company, sud ls, be? sides, so old and eut ol repair that the appa I ratos Is scarcely sheltered lrom the weather. The oompany ls a most efficient one and, as will be remembered, was the winner of the prize In the last annual tournament. They have long desired and deserved a better engine-bouse, aad the Council has done a just and proper thing in granting their petition. ANOTHER ROBBERT ON THE RAIL. The passengers on the Savannah and Charleston train, which arrived In this city yesterday morning, report a remarkably au daoloua series of robberies a? having been perpetrated In the sleeping car ot the train during the night. The train lett Savannah at half-past eleven P. M., and the passengers in the sleeping car almost Immediately retired to their berths, and lt ls supposed that the robberies were committed soon after the train started. Several of the passengers lost con? siderable sums of money, aa well as watches and other valuables. Among the victims were Messrs. Henry F. Smith and William Carter, each ol whom lost his watch and chain and the contents of bis pocketbook. The conductor noticed a suspi? cious looking individual lo the car soon after the train started, and watched him for some '.imp- but seeing nothing which would war? rant interference, he paid no further atten? tion to his movemente, and, lt U said, went quietly to sleep. When the passengers awoke and discovered their losses, the mysterious stranger bad disappeared from the train. The circumstances of the robbery were re? ported to the superintendent of the road at Charleston, and dispatches wore sent to the different stations along the Hoe, which result? ed, later la the day, In the capture of the thief by the employees of the road, and the re? covery of all his booty. THE MEDICAL SOCIETY. Preparations for the Meeting of the State Association. A regular meeting of the Charlestoo Medi? cal Society was held last evening, and ors. J. 8. Buist, F. L. Parker and T. Grange Simons were appointed a committee ot arrangements to prepare for the annual meeting of ihe State Medical Association, whioh Is tobe held at the Hoper Hospital next Tuesday morning. The following gentlemen were elected delegates to represent the society at the State Assidation: Drs. J. F. M. Geddings, W. H. Balley, George I E. Trescot, J. R. Mood, J. Ford Prloleau, Manning Simons, '3. L. Lockwood and H. W.
