[Jost before bis death. Captain Matthew F.

"Homo,-bear me home, at last,''- be said,
"And lay me wnere my dead are lying:
Bat not while skies are overspread,
And mournful wintry windi are sighing.

"Wait till the royal marou of Spring
Carpets the monntain fastness over,
Till chattering birds are on the wing,
And buzzing bees are in the clover.
"Walt tilt the laurel bursts Its bads,
And creeping ivy flings its graces
About the lichen v. rooKs,-and coods
Of sunshine nd the shady places.

"Then.-when the sky, the air, the grass,
Sweet Nature all, ls glad and tender,
Then, bsar me through the Goiben-Pass,*
Amid Its flash of May-day splendor."

And never stooped she to impart
Her lore to one who held lt dearer.

The stars had secrets for him: Seas

The winds gave ap their masteries,
The tidal flows confessed their meaning.

Of Ocean-pa? us, the tangled clew
Hs taught the nations to nnravel;
And showed the track, where safely through,
The lightning-footed thought might travel.

And yet, unspoiled by all the store
Or Nature's grander revelations.
Who bowed more lovingly before
The lowliest of her fair creations ?

TSE MODO O LAVA BED.
Wonderful Feature? of tbe Indian
Stronghold.
Jessa Applegate, writing to the Portland
(Oregon) Balletic, gives the following descrip?
tion of the lava bed in which the hostile Modoo
Indians are now Intrenched:
The stronghold of the Modoc Indians is a
''pedregal" of tbe most extensive and ?labor?
?t J description-an irregular volcanic eoxface
of basalt, tr achy te ,4c., more or leas broken into
Sloarais from below, and cracked and flea ar?
in the process of cooling. It occupies, with
bat few intervals, nearly one hnndred square
miles. If yon can, imagine a smooth, solid
sheet of granite, ten miles square and five hnn?
dred feet thick, covering resistless mines of
gunpowder, scattered at irregular intervals
.under it; that these mmes are exploded simul?
taneously, rending the whole field into rec?
tangular masses, from th a size of a match-box
to that of a church, heaping these masses
Ugh in some plac a, and leaving deep chasms
In others. Following the explosion, the whole
thing is placed in one of Vulcan's crucibles,
and heated np to a point when the whole
begins to fuse and nm together, jnd tbei. ".flfer
ttd to cobL The roughness of the upper surwe
remains as the explosion lett it, while all
below is honey-combed by the cracks sud crev?
ices caused by the cooring of the melted rock.
An Indian can, from the top of one of these
stone pyramids, shoot a man without exposing
even so much as an inch square of himself.
Be can without undue baste load and shoot a
common muzzle-loadinsr rifle ten times before
a man can scramble over the rocks and chasms
between the alain and the slayer. If, at this
terrible expense of life, a force dislodges him
trod bis cover, be has only to drop into and
1 How some subterranean passage with which
lie is familiar to gain another ambush, from
whence it will coat ten more lives te dislodge
him. ? , - . .
y A GIGANTIC FAMILY.
The facts appended appear in the London
Medical Becord; Perhaps we may make no ex?
cuse for departing from tbe custom of not
noticing exhibtions when we call tbe attention j
of our readers to the most remarkable develop?
ment of adipose (issue whicn bas, probably,
aver been observed in Europe, at least within
one family. It is interesting as regards the
taw of hereditary transmission to observe the
peculiarities of the O'Neal family, of which a
careful examination by a writer in tbe Medico- j
Chirurgical Beview leads him to vouch for the j
accuracy of the extraordinary measurements
-wo give. They are natives of Queens County,
Ireland, forty-seven miles lrom the city of j
Pa blt n. They are born ot respectable parents,
bard-working farmers. The father stood six
feet, and weighed twenty-seven stone. The
mother is forty-five years of age, stands five
j'eet two inches in height, measures around her
ima twenty-six inches, across her shoulders
three feet, round her waist five feet six inches,
and weighs the enormous Bom of twenty-one
stone. Her eldest son is twenty-five years of j
age, stands six feet two inches, weighs eighteen
Stone five pounds, and at the present time he is
s Life Guard. All the sons *nd daughters were
of large dimensions. Ann O ^eal, the eldest
daughter, is twenty ye. . of age. She
stand five feet six inches in height, and meas
urea around the arm twenty-seven inches,
across the shoulders one yard and a balf,
round tbe waist eight feet, and has the enorm?
ous waight of thirty nine stone. Her youngest
sister is eighteen years cf Sage. She stands
Uva feet two inches in height, measures around
liar arm twenty five inches, across her
shoulders three feet, round her waist six feet,
and weighs twenty-three stone. The eldest
daughter ia, as may well be imagined, on ac
conni, cf ber obesity, ocaroely able to walk.
She appears to be uneasy in her legs, and is
compelled to lean up against the wa'l for sup?
port. The vaccination marks on her arms,
having increased with age and development of |
adipose tisane, are as large as ordinary sac c ere.
As there is no padding or artificial methods
employed to enhance the enormous weight of
the specimens, the disproportion which strikes
thc^observer between the gigantic bodies and
the relatively small though absolutely large
crania isalmost startling. In Ann O'Neal (af?
fectionately and abanrdly named "Lily" by her
am iliar relatives) the marl&r bones are enorm?
ous, and the mouth is much overhung by the ]
forward projection of the lower jaw. Although
the; mother bhows signs of excessive alcoholic
consumption, there is no disease noticeable or
complained ot, and tho subjects do not appear
so suffer from any other affection than the in?
convenience of having to support so much fat.
