Cleansing Fire*.
BT ADKLIIDC PROCTOR.
- Let thy gold be cast la the furnace
Thy red gold, preci os and bright;
Do not fear for the hungry.nr.e,
With ILS caverns of burning light.
And tue gold shall return more precious,
Free from every spot and s'aln;
For gold must be tried by Are,
AS a heart must be tried by pain l
In the cruel Are of sorrow,
Cast thy heart, do not faint or wall;
Let thy hand be arm and steady,
Do not let thy spiri . q? ail.
But walt till the trial ls over,
And take thy heart attain;
For, as gold is tried bv Are,
So a heart mutt be tried by pain 1
1 shall know by the gleam and the glitter
Of the golden chain you wear, -
By your heart's calm strength in loving,
Of the Ure yon have bad to beer.
Beat on. true heart, forever I
Shine bright, strong, gol len chain;
And Mess the cleansing Ure,

THE HORRORS OF THE SEA.
Seven Days Without Food or Water in
/ ' the MW-Ocean.
Pilchard Smith, the fireman of the ill-fated
Missouri, arrived on Saturday in the steam
ship Columbia from Havana. He tells the
following story of bis escape from the burn
ing ship, and his subsequent sufferings while
drifting about upon the ocean for seven days
without food or water:
When the fire In the ship had got beyond
control the captain cave the orders to stop
the engines and launch the boats. Smith
Jumped Into a boat containing nine men, and
nearly flited with water. Alter drifting about
for flf.ee n or twenty minutes they saw another
boat, the occupants of which gave them a
bucket. Smith and his companions attempted
to bail their boat, out the sea ran so high that
lt waa Impossible to empty lt. Tbey kept row
ing until three or four o'clock In the morn
ing, and then Baw another boat, bottom up,
with two men clinging to lt. Smith swam to
the capsized boat lor the purpose of righting
her. One ef the men that was clinging to J
her cook Smith's place In the other beat. It
waa dark, and the twe boats soon drifted out
of sight of each other, leaving smith and one
Stewart alone on the capsized boat. While
clinging to the boat's keel, the sea dashing |
over teem, they heard the wild screams of the
women and children who were still in tbe
burning ship, until the masts tottered and fell
and the vessel went down beneath the waves.
Smith and Stewart finally succeeded In right
ing their boat, and lashed the oars across lt
to prevent lt from again capsizing. The boat
waa still full of water, and was washed from
stem to stern by every sea. Smith prayed to
God to save them, and while he was praying a
wave dashed over bim, oiling his eyes, mouth
and nose with salt water and almost blinding i
, him.
At daybreak they made paddles of the boat's j
seats and paddled all day. Tbe sharks fol
lowed the boat constantly, and Smith ire- j
qt&ntly hit them with his paddle. On the |
morning of the third, day they succeeded in
balling the boat, and then made a sall out ol'
canvas torn from a Ute preserver. 1 bey bad
not a morsel of food nor a drop of water, and
their sufferings were terrible. On the third j
night, while sitting at one end of the boat, be
waa startled bj a voice crying "Help! help!"
It waa the voice of bis companion, who had j
fallen into the ocean. Smith Jumped Into the
water and saved bim. Ho was just in time.
A shark had seen Stewart and darted at the
boat with open Jaws Just as Smith drew him |
ont of the water. The .shark remained all
night alongside ot tbe boat. Smith drove lt |
away several: Um ea with bis paddle, but the
hideous monster always returned; and tbe
boat was soon surrounded by huge sharks that
seemed to be waiting for their prey. Stewart
was very much excited. He fell on Smith's
neck a dozen times, and thanked him for hav
lng saved his life. He said he was not afraid
to die, but did not want to die so horrible a j
death. This night seemed to last an age.
At daybreak they saw a sall. They rowed
toward the ship, they shouted and signalled,
bat it was all lu vain; nobody could bear them,
and the ship sailed ont of sight. AB tbe dark
outlines of the ship became fainter and fainter
their hearts sank, and' they gave up all hope
of bel g saved. Smith says ne felt no hunger,
although h had not tasted food for four days,
He prayed constantly for a sight of land. He
forgot tb .cold, tbe blinding spray, the thirst,
the. banger, In that one thought. He would
look lor land until hla eyes became weary,
and he could loos: no longer. At last a ram-1
atora came, and the" two men caught enough
o fresh water to wet their parched lips. Toe
relief was dearly paid. for. as the rain poured
In torrents and the,' wind Increased to a sale,
until clouds and waves seemed to be one mass !
of dashing foam. Still they were thankful for
the few drops ot water they caught upon their j
Ups, for haalt not been for the storm they
would probably have died of thirst.
Seven days and nights of Intense suffering J
passed away, and on- the morning of the
eighth day they eaught sight ot lao d. They
embraced each other and shed tears ot joy.
They had struok on a reef about a mlle and a J
bab! from Abaco. It was 3 o'clock In tbe
morning. It. was .a wild, lonely spot, and
there were no signs of vegetation. Smith
crawled on bia hands and leet looking tor
something to eat. He lound some spider
crabs and a few prickly pears. He ate some
of the crabs-the first food he had tasted for
eight days. He took, the pears to Stewart
"NeveriiaB anything tn my life tasted to me
BO sweet," said Stewart, after he had eaten
the, first pear. Smith ate some too, and I
thought tbey were delicious. A dozen of
these prickly pears lasted them three days.
They built themaelves'a am all but oat of one
oar and a mass of weeda whloh Smith had
found among tba rooks.
Stewart, had suffered terribly from hunger.
He said: "I know shall starve to death. I
have been saved from the sharks to die of |
starvation." - At night he raved. The han
ger had driven him to madness. He raved
abont'bls family, his wife and his children,
and hagged Smith to his heart In the belief
that he was bis son. One night they were
sleeping together lo their tent, and ali la
sudden Stewart's breath seemed to cease.
Smith felt bis friend's body; It waa warm.
But In the next moment Jila pulse had, stopped.
Smith felt bis trlenc.'s body again; lt was
cold. Smith qult'the tent and sat on the rooks
all night. He could not sleep in tbe tent with
the corpse of hts friend- The next morning
be dragged the body to th rocke and ooverea
lt with sand and se waed.
Smith soent fifteen days on the rocks. On
the- sixteenth day a schooner hove In sight
He made a signal ont of the dead Stewart's
pantaloons.' T wenty-four h on ra passed before
the signal was seen by any one on board the
approaching vessel. Meantime Smith, weak
from suffering, hadsunk back upon tbe rocks,
unable to mo ve. * Bnddenlv; he heard a voice;
lt seemed to him almost like a dream. "Here
li a man," the voice eald, "but I don't know
whether he ls dead or alive." Smith heard
another voice, "No, captain, this man ls not
dead; I see him move." The words revived
bim. He jumped up. and fainted toto the
arfas of the captain anti the mate, who took
bim on board the schooner.
