NEW YORK, December 7.
Society ls feeling quite comfortable and
happy over the banging of a ruffian In Brook?

because, owing to Its own maudlin cowardice
the criminal classes have been riding rough
shod over everything lately. We are lu a flt
of virtuous indignation, and the first mur?
derer whose time was near had to suffer for
lt. Had Scannet spared Donohue and King
confined his pistol practice to a sporting gal?

choked to death yesterday, would have suc?

Following him comes the executioner, who
straps the man's hands behind, decorates bis
head with a horrible black cap, and potting a
rope around his neck, adjusts the knot
carefully, under the left ear. Thus arrayed
the criminal goes lortb, supported on all
aides, front rear, right and left, by five Briests,
ehauntiog the-, prayers for the dying. With
solemn,- measured tread the procession
marches over a long prison yard to one cor?
ner where a great crowd of "special deputy
sheriffs" are gathered. Hats are defied and
all eyes are turned upon the central figure.
So wonder that, under the accumulation of
these dreadful ceremonies, the pluck of tue
fellow, gave way and he fainted at the toot of i
the sallows. After be bad revived and, I ?
trembling in every limb, was put under the ,,
drop, it was some minutes before the praying f
and hand shaking was finished and he was j
allowed to depart in peace. He really died a
hundred deaths before his neck was broken.
Poor Hr. Greeley is In bis grave and tho j

enough* to keep up the old reputation ol tbe
eper. January is coming on, when tbe coun
' annual subscriptions are usually renewed,
and what have the Tribune stockholders to
offer their rural patrons in return for having

The rumor lo that tbe Tribune will go back
to the party. There Is no field for it outside,
uslesa lt wants to try the experiment ot being
an Independent Journal, In Imitation of tbe
Herald.. The Liberal Republican party can
hardly bc Bald to have an existence, lt cer?
tainly ls not numerous enough to support an
organ of the magnitude of the Tribune. The
World-ls the Democratic organ, and cannot
well be displaced by a new comer. The re
port ls. I repeat, that the Tribune will have to
make its peace with the party lt attempted to
overthrow, and as a conciliatory means to?
wards that end a man pf distinction, whose
Radicalism Is orthodox. Will be put at the head
of lu affairs. Humor revives the name ef vice
President Colfax in this connection, and I also
hear those of General Hawley, of the Hartford
Courant, and Bev. Henry Ward Beecher men
Th? nomination of Colonel James L. Orr, of
Sooth Carolina, as minister to Russia by the
President-, provokes comment from the New
York papers. They generally speak favor?
ably of him, and the Sunday News, after re?
viewing Bis public career, pronounces him to
be one of the "luckiest ot politicians." - He ls
not credited with transcendant abilities, but
with what ls better-being one of fortune
favorites.
. Perhaps you will remember the doubts
expressed in one ot these letters of the peen
nlary success of Stanley, tbe Herald reporter,
as a lecturer. Rullmao, the manager, de

here, made the preposterous offer to him of
an engagement for one hundred nights at Ave
