Under the apple tree, spreading and thick,
Happy with only a pan ana a Btlok,
' On the soft g rasa in the shadow that lies,
OucUttle Fannie ls making mud plea.
on^er brown apron and bright drooping head,
Showers of pink and white blossoms are sh. d;
Tied toa branch thataeems meant Just for that,
Sances and flatters her little straw hat.
Dash, mil of Joy in the bright Bummer day,
Zealously chases the robas a? av.
Barks at the squirrels, or snaps at the flies,
all the while Fannie ls making mad pies,
Sana hine and soft snmxer breezes astir,
While she ls busy, are busy with her;
Cheeks rosy glowing, and bright sparkling eyes
Bring they to Fanny, while making mud pies.
Dollies and playthings are all laid away,
Sot to come out tm the next rainy day,
Under tle blue of these sweet summer skies,
Nothing's so pleasant as masing mud pies.
Gravely she Bl 1rs. with a serious look,
"Making believe" she's a true pastry cook;
Sundry brown splashes on forehead and eyes
Show that our Fanny ls making mad pies.
Bat au the sou or her innocent play,
Clean soap and water will soon wash away;
Many a pleasure in daintier guise.
Leaves darker traces than Fanny's mud pies.

General N. B. Forrest, of Tennessee, publishes
a card Di the Memphis Appeal ki answer to
certain chargea reported to have been made
against him during the late campaign by Gen?
eral Hammond, of Missouri. The substance of j
the charg?e made by General Hammond ls [
that the glgantlo public robberies In recon?
structed Alabama, which have been notorl- j
oualy the work of the Radical rulers of that
State, are equally chargeable to the Democrats,
and that General Forrest, as president of the
Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad, had prof?
ited by them. General Forrest knocks the
bottom out of these allegations by showing
that he never waa president of that railroad J
and by other and equally conclusive answers,
and then goes for the redoubtable General
beyond the Mississippi In the foUowlng style-'
This ls not the first time 1 have been person?
ally traduced by persons who bear the title ot
Federal officers, and on a former occasion I
have branded such charges In such terms (ii
there had been proper military courage to
back up an Insult) as afforded ample oppor?
tunity to my assailants.
I BOW propose to offer the same opportunity
to General Hammond, to whom I desire to
address- myself In plain and unmistakable
terms,'not stronger than the imputation upon
me deserves, but so plain that bis understand?
ing of my meaning and purpose cannot be at {
fault. He la a Uar (I can use no other language
to one so base,) a cowardly puppy and a scoun?
drel If be owns the title 01 General in the
Federal army, he disgraces lt; and If I have
anything like Justice and fair dealing at the
hands ot the journal that published bis unpro?
voked and Wanton outrage upon me, this
brand ofllar, coward and scoundrel will spread
aa far as hts slander,' and Uve longer. That he
may be assured of my willingness to hear from
him, lie ls notified that a letter addressed to
me at Memphis wiU meet with attention.

A QUEER WHEELBARROW LOAD.
How st Lady Exacted tne Payment of a
li?se Wafer.
The Baltimore Gazette gives au amusing ac?
count of the result of a wager made with a
young lady by Mr. B. R. Hersey, ol that city,
thatjn case Mr. Greeley failed to carry the
. State of Mew York, he would tmndel her
around an entire block or the olty In a wheel?
barrow^ in open day, lt being understood that
In ease New Tork gave Mr. Greeley a majori?
ty, the lady waa to perform a similar kind of?
fice lor him. The Gazette says:
The result in Kew Tork, as announced yes?
terday morning, decided the bet In favor ol
the lady. Mr. Hersey, feeling satisfied that
the lady would not permit him to pay the bet,
made a second one with her, to the effect
that she would not consent to carry out the
Brat wager. This the lady also accepted, con ?
Blderably to the suprlse of the gentleman, c
who, however, at once made preparations for c
paying the forfeit lt was mutually agreed f
that the wheelbarrow "show" should take \
place on the most publlo thoro ugh fares of the
city, and the General Wayne Inn, corner Bal-,
tl more and Paca streets, was selected as the j :
.tartina; place. At the | hour appointed (len I '
o'clock) the "b?ttlsts" m adel their appearance, 11
the lady being fashionably attired, though,
with becoming modesty, waa closely veiled.
A ^tJtoelbarrow was procured from Mr. George
Drakely, of No. 2 North Green street, and a
few m tn cte? was consumed Ul arranging the
lady In an easy position. In accordance with
her wishes she was seated plump down on
the floor ol the vehicle, with her back; to
the wheel, and a neat pair of gaiter boots
peeping over the bandies at either Bide. Theil
gentleman was considerably excited at the |<
"start," aa hi? every movement was closely
observed by a large crowd that had been at?
tracted by the novelty of th? spectacle, all
anxious to view tb? sport. All being In readl- ?
ness, Mr. Hersey "seized'the handles of the (
harrow, and Quickly raising lt a few Inches c
from the ground, snot down Baltimore street i
at a rapid rate of speed, being careful to pre- t
serve a steady motion of the one-wheeled c
equipage in order to avoid any mishap to the J
fair occupant
The ero wd cheered as the procession moved r
off, and the number or spectators Increased *
each moment as the barrow was trudged along &
with a squeaking and grating sound. Down Ii
South Eut aw street to Lombard the "happy u
pair" trundled, to the infini ta amusement of "
the throng that at this time numbered several '
thousand persons. The lady preserved a be- ?
coming silence during her Journey, though lt n
was noticed at limes that she pressed her hand n
to her veil, as though smothering her laughter, s
The gentleman resolutely pursued a remark- a
able dignity of manner considering the indi- ll
crone role ne bad assumed. On reaching Lom- 1
bard street the 'trundler' diverged careiuUy to ?J
the right, and up Lombard street to Paca the ' L
"procession" passed. On Paca street a con- t
Blderable up-grade was encountered, bnt the E
gentleman pat bis "best foot foremost," and
wheeled smoothly and steadily the one hun- t
dred and forty pounds ol feminine humanity
aloBg W Baltimore street, the place of begin- .1
nins. The vehicle was there brought to a stop,
and the lady gallantly landed on terra firma,
and amid bursts of laughter from the specta?
tors, the gentleman disappeared with her,
going In the western section of the city.

room of their dwelling. While absent the
