Mr. Duncan A. McIntyre died at his resi?
dence in Marlon County, near Centenary
Ch uren, on the 20th instant, after a protracted
illness.
-Mr. George Cooper, an old, wealthy and
highly esteemed citizen ol Williamsburg
County, died at his residence in Iodiantown
on the 22d Instant, aged 69.
-The lecture on ''The uses o? Modern
Knowledge," delivered before the Sumter
Lyceum on the nih instant by Henry L.
Pinckney, Esq., ls Bpoken of by the Sumter
papers as a masterly effort.
-The Advertiser doesn't think much ot
Edgefield as a field for a dancing-master. It
says: "A danclng-maater in Charleston writes
us In reference to the prospect of bis getting
a dancing class in Edgefield. At tblB time
we wonld not advise bim to come; think if be
waa here and triedlo live on bis vocation
alone that he wonld perish to death in about
tee same time than-lt takes lightning to kill a
mane. In fact, If rosin was two cents a ton he

fruit, but retail dealers appear afraid to han?
dle very large quantities at a time, and limit
their purchases to small parcels. In domestic
pears, Bartletts continue exceedingly scarce,
and prime Irait will bring $30 per bbl quickly;
we understand 2 bbls actually sold to-day for
$60. Granea are in bot moderate demand and

ron's" Musical and Moral Snow, and at about
five o'clock, while Mr. Julius Williams waa
walking the wire from eggshell's store to
Cox's store, the hook In tbe block and tackle
broke, and Mr. Williams fell to the ground, a
distance of twenty feet, striking on his bead
and shoulders; but, lam happy to say, no
limbs were broken and he seems to be all.

CRIMES AND CASUALTIES.
Terrible Moller Explosion In Sumter
The Sumter Watchman says: "On Friday
afternoon Ia?t, between three and four o'clock,
the boiler of the steam cotton-gin and grist?
mill, belonging to Mr. T. J. Tuomey, situated
lu the southeastern limits of the town, ex?
ploded with terrific report. The building Im?
mediately attached was completely destroyed,
and ls now a complete wreck. Andrew Sl
monds, the colored engineer, who was fear
iully scalded and terribly injured, died Friday
night. Jacob Peterson, a colored man in at?
tendance, was thrown up In the air and fell
soo?* distance off, seriously though not mor?
tally inured. Mr. Tuomey and two colored
men who were in the mill at Me time of the
explosion, were also more or less Injured.'
Incendiarle* at Work.
The Marion Star is Informed by a passenger
on the Wilmington, Columbia and Augusta
train, Monday night last, that when Me train
arrived at Lu mber Elver, Me brid ge waa on
Are, and had lt been an hour or two later, the
result might have been fearful. The fire was
evidently Me work of an Incendiary.
Negro Outrage In LeraviIle.
The Elngstree Star says : "Wesley Mc?

ville, on Saturday last, by being ont and
stabbed with knives in the banda of several
negroes, wbo, we are Informed, literally
hacked him to pieces. We are not Informed

the aggressor, but we falito see any good
reason why a parcel ot Infuriated negroes
should so brutally and inhumanly hack to
pieces a poor, weakly, defenceless boy, even
it he had given provocation, whloh we do not
assert that he did, for we do not know bow the
fracas began. Three negroes charged wltb
being implicated In this affair have been ar?
rested and lodged in Jail at thia place."
