A correspondent writing to the Baltimore
American says of Paris:
The work of restoring all the palaces and
buildings destroyed by the Commune and
repairing all the damage Inflicted by the war
!s steadily progressing. The walls of tue pal?
aces all stood firm, and even the Hotel de
Ville will soon show no trace ol' the destroyer.
Thonsands ol workmen are everywhere "en?
gaged in the work ol reconstruction, and^ge
t Column Vendome will soon commence to rise
. again, the base of which ls carefully railed in
again and made ready for sustaining the
restored column.
Public buildings are also being erected in
varions parts ot the city. The Column of July,
which was damaged by the mob, is scaffolded
and thronged with workmen irom base to

Sp repaired. New statuary is being erected In I
T the Place de la Concorde, the Bois de Bou-1
logue ls resuming Its former attractions, and I
the Champs Elysees was never more bright

directions, are thronged with people, and the I
.stores and cafes brilliant with gas Jets reflect

On Sunday evening a great many of the
large stores have their windows Ut up for the IC
display of goods, but their doors are closed, I J
and there appear to be no salesmen In attend-1 \
ance. The eales are all lu full blast, however, I \
and doing an extra heavy business. The best I i
of order ls everywhere maintained, and every I c
body appears cheerful and in high spirits, | c
notwithstanding the recent national reverses.
There are no beggars on the streets, us in I (
London, and an almost entire absence of street I (
vendors of all kinds, except women and girls I '
witta fruit for sale. In London, crowds of
ragged boys and glrlB Interrupt you every 11
moment with matches or something for sale, 11
and whine and whimper until you are com-11
polled to give them something to get rid of J t
them. In Paris we have not met one of ibis 11
class, who seem* to be altogether excluded I .

The,"Mon th ly Gossip," In the October num?
ber ol Llpplncotl's Magazine, contains this
capital story:
Perhaps the most brilliant conversationalist
tnat Virginia or the United States ever pro?
duced was the Ute Littleton Waller Tazewell.
Unfortunately for rds reputation as lo consis?
tency and firmness of opinion, his mind was so
capacious and WeB stored that it was Impossi?
ble for him not _o see all sides of any subjeot
on which he conversed, and hence lt was not
always easy-indeed, it was often extremely
difficult-ror his bearers to ascertain what his
real opinion was. In illustration of this pecu?
liarity of Governor Tazewell, the following
anecdote ls told:

ion, began. A stream of brilliant and forcible
words poured from his fluent lips, enchaining
and delighting his two auditors. At the expi?
ration of an liour Governor Floyd ventured lo
Interrupt him: "Your opinion, then, is-"
"Walt a moment," said Tazewell. Diverging
from the line of his previous remarks, he cor?
uscated lor another hour as forcibly as belore.
It was then Preston's turn to intercept- and
if possible arrest-the flow of talk:
"We may conclude, then, Mr. Tazewell,
that yon hold-"
"No, not at all. You quite misapprehend
me." Taking another point of departure, he
went on from hour to hour, zigzagging and
worm-fencing at each interruption, until at
last broad daylight flooded the room.
"Bless my soul!" said he, looking up sur?
prised, "lt Is morning! ?Floyd, If you will give
me a bowl of water to wash my face, and a
Julep, I will He down for an hour or two to
rest mj3eif; and to night, If you choose, we
will resume our conversation. I am afraid I
have not made myself quite clear to either of
you gentlemen."
The water and the Julep were duly brought,
and the fluent talker went up to his chamber.
Floyd and Preston remained staring at each
other for a long time In profound silence. At
length Mr. Preston said, "Have you any Idea
what Mr. Tazewell's real opinion ls?"
"None whatever. Have you?"
"Not thefremoteu conception. Do you think
he has any opinion?" "]
