LOCAL LACONICS.
-The friends of Lieutenant-Governor Ran
sler, the regular Republican nominee for Con
gre8smau irom this district, gave him the
compliment ot a serenade by the Culcora hana
last evening at bis residence.
-Simeon Gale,iheRlkersville murderer,was
removed yesterday from the main Guardhouse
to the jail. Coroner Tait has been notluVd by
telegraph of the murder, and is expected to
arrive this morning In time to conduct the
inquest.
-Testera1*! afternoon an East Bay mer?
chant, on returning from dinner? bitched his
saddle-horse near the door of his etore, and
went within doors. A short time later be re?
turned to where the horse had been hitched,
and was surprised to flad that lt had disap?
peared. The detectives were informed of the
fact, but lt was alterwards ascertained that
the horse had been taken for an afternoon's
ride by a little white boy on good terms with
.the merchant._

Municipal Court.
Abram Small, disorderly, two dollars fine or
twenty days. Robert Scott, stealing fowls,
thirty days. Two flogs, running at large, one
dollar each.
Trial Justice'^ Courts.
Cuffle Washington was carried before Trial
Justice Lovett yesterday, cbarg'ed with as?
saulting Albert Allen. He was convicted,
and sent to jail for thirty days.
Mary Fenwick was convicted by Trial Jus- j
lice Schroder, yesterday, ol maltreating the
child of Martha Mathews, and sentenced to
pay five dollars and costs or go to jail for
twenty days.
Sarah McGee, the woman who struck John
Heffron, about a week ago, while on examina?
tion at the Mayor's Court for disorderly con?
duct, was tried yesterday by Trial Justice
John G. Mackey, and sentenced to ten days In
jail.
Molsey Brown and Simon Jenkins were be
fore Trial Justice Caulfield, each charged with
stealing a watch; ihe first from Lewis Hall,
and the second from John Sanders. Both
were committed to Jail for examination. The
watche? have beeu recovered through in?
formation furnished by tb* prisoners.
CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
.Work has been commenced on the new brick
store on East Bay street, east side, between
Market and Gulgnard. which was spokeu ol
by TBS NEWS some weeks ago, as In contem?
plation of erection for Mr. James Kearney.
The walls are already over three feet high.
The building will be twenty-five feet front by
sixty-two deep, two stories high, and will
nave double piazzas on the south side. It will
have an ordinary brick front, covered with
cream colored cement. The second story
will be used as a dwelling. The work Is belDg
done by Mr. L. D. Turner, and will be com?
pleted by the first of November next.
A handsome iron front, with square doora
and windows and fluted Corinthian columns,
has been put on the first story of Messrs.
Kinsman <fc Howell's buldlng, at the south?
east corner ol Eist Bay and Cumberland
streets. The front was cast at the founder
les of Messrs. James M. Eason & Bro. The:
first floor of the building will be occupied in a
short time by the wholesale grocery firm of

ing by Robert Scott, a dusky fowl fancier.
The unwonted commotion produced among
the chickens by this sudden apparition at?
tracted the proprietor, who repaired to the
roost armed with a murderous-looking blun?
derbuss, and induced the thief to propose
terms of capitulation. The surrender was un?
conditional, and Scott went belora the Mayor,
who sent him lo the House of Correction for
