Christian Advocate to announce that "the

close the session before Christmas.
Christ Church.
The regular services will be conducted in
this church, as usual, to-:norrow, by the Rev
J. Mercier Green, pastor, commencing at Live
o'clock in the alternoon. As the choir have
been practicing assiduously ol late the music
may be expected to be of a high order. It ls
understood that many persons have been,
heretofore, deterred from attending services
at Christ Church, by the impression that lt is
situated a considerable distance beyond the
terminus of the City Ballway. In tact, the
distance ls not over three hundred yards.

-Samuel Evans, one of the inmates of the
Lunatic Asylum, at Columbia, that have been
recently discharged In consequence of tbe
lack of fundB lor their maintenance, arrived
in this city Thursday afternoon by the South'
Carolina Railroad. The conductor turned bim
over to a policeman, and he was taken before
the Major yesterday morning. He was dis?
charged.

BAFFLE.-Al a meeting of the Washington
Light Infantry Charitable Association, held on
Thursday evening, several anieles left over
from the last lair of the association were
raffled, willi the following result: Two marble
tables, made and presented to the association
by a Charleston stonp-cutler, were won, re?
spectively, by Dr. Joseph Wlutbrop and Mr.
Lucas Simons. One lace quilt, by Dr. T.

Two MORE BAGS OF NEW CAROLINA SEA ISL?
AND COTTON.-There was received yesterday
by Messrs. Fraser & Dill, factors. Adger'e
wbarf, from Wadmalaw, one bag new sea Isl?
and cotton, from Messrs. W. C. Geraty & Co.,
of that island. It was of good preparation and
staple.
At a later hour there was received an addi?
tional bag of new Carolina sea Islands from
Wadmalaw Island, grown on the plantation ol
Mr. F. Schaffer, and consigned to Mr. W. A.
Boyle, factor, Adger'a wharves. It was of fine
quallly.
AN UNWELCOME VISITOR.-A colored man
living on the premise* ol a Mrs. Harbers, at
the c6rner of Spring and Chestnut streets, was
disturbed on Thursday night by loud and con?
tinuous barking ot his dogs. On going Into
the yard he discovered a rattlesnake colled
up in the moonlight, springing his rattle vigo?
rously and making occasional strikes al the
dogs, which, howerer, were quite careful to
keep at a respectable distance. The snake
was dispatched by one or two blows, anti
proved to be four feet long, willi six rait If s
and a button. It was of the species known as
the swamp or water rattle. Yesterday lt was
brought to THE NEWS office by B. D. Harrison,
a colored subscriber.
ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE A THIEF.-An exert?
ing chase occurred on East B ty, near Broad
street, ubout live o'clock yesterday afternoon,
through an attempt ou the part ot two detec?
tives to capture Nassau Grant, a daring and
notorious thief. Tue officers had been In?
formed (hat Grant was in the vicinity of the
corner of Elliott and East Bay streets, and
while pursuing the trail came suddenly upon
him lu a store near that locality. Grant find?
ing himself cornered, drew a long and deadly
looklng knife and rushed upon the foremost
officer, who moved away from the doorway
readily enough, and the former finding lils
way e'ear, dashed at tull speed down towards
Boyce's wharf. Tne discomfited officer fol?
lowed and fired one shot from his pistol.
Grant continued on, however, clearing the
way before him with his knife, and finally
made good his escape.

The Regatta Association of South Caro?
lina- Gossip about Aquatic Affairs.
A meeting of prominent gentlemen, who ore
Interested In boating aftMrs, was held yester
day, at which lt was decided to form the Re?
gatta Association ot South Carolina, for the
pupose of promoting aquatic sports of every
kind. It ls the object ol the association to
lend encouragement to all races, and to draft
standard rules by which they shall be govern?
ed. Every spring a rrgatia week will be ap?
pointed, with a view to getting up occasions
simllur to the Jockey club gatherings which
took place in this city before the war. All
classes of boats will be admitted lo the races
dtirlog the regatta week, upon the payment of
an entrance fee, and Invitations will be ex?
tended to the boating clubs of adjacent cities
to participate In the contests.
The association will be composed of the
older citizens of the community, aud the
president of the Chamber of Commerce will
always be invited to preside over the sports,
and act ox officio as commodore. During the
regatta week, members of the association and
their families will be provided with suitable
accommodations for witnessing the contest.
The annual festivities will wind up In a grand
ball. It ls to be hoped that all our citizens
will unite In endeavoring to make the enter
prize successful, as lt will undoubtedly con?
tribute to the prosperity of the elly by annu?
ally attracilng hither thousands of persons
who would not otherwise come.
In the event of the association proving a
Bucees?, the various boat clubs of the city will
procure flrst-3las3 shell racers, and the scene
of the races will be transferred lo some point
farther up, either the Ashley or the Cooper
River, where smooth water can be found.
The Atlantic Rowing Club are endeavoring to
get up another race between the Zephyr a.^J
the Wave, with different crews than those
that manned them during the lust race. The
movement, however, does not seem likely to
succeed. A race between the Whitehall boats,
to take place off the Battery at an early day,
is also talked about.

stealing three dollars from Wm. Smith.
Samuel Green was committed for examina?
tion this morning, on a charge of stealing ten
dollars from James Bowles.
