The Sc?.
O troubled SL?, that longe?t evermore
From ont thy oold and sunless depths to rise .
To the bright orb that urawa thee toward the
skies,
And neatest thy breast against the JO yielding
?bore,
In vhs vain struggle to unloose the bands
That bind thee down to earth l in thy despair,
With sallen roar now leaping nigh in slr.
Now moaning, sobbing on the In sat la; o sands:
Type of the sou; art thoa 1 she strives like tnee;
By time and circumstance and law bonnd down,
She beats agalast the shores of the Unknown,
Wrestles with unseen force-doubt, mystery
And longs forever for the goal afar
That sames and still retreats like a receding star.
A CU AFTER OF FACTS.
Th* Condition of the Crops-A B?d
Crossing-What will the County Com?
missioners DO About It ?
[Faon otra "OWN COBEBSPOND?KT.]
BisHOPvnxB, August 17.
The August rains have been excessively
heavy In Ibis county. Drenching showers
continue to fall dally, with no present indica?
tion of better weather soon. Cotton has failed
very rapidly since the first of tbe month. The
plant 13 assuming ihe autumnal hue, and ls
fast shedding both leaves and Irult. Evidently
there will be no top cotton this year worth
speaking o?, and consequently not a full crop
as in 1870, when the weed bore heavily from
top to bottom. Colton 1B beginning to open
everywhere, and picking will commence ear?
lier than last season. On light lands some
farmers have already commenced.
The caterpillars have lately made their ap?
pearance In this locality. They are eating the
peas, grass, blades of late corn and rice, and
In one instance cotton, ir they wnilnue to
Increase in numbers they will destroy vegeta- j
Hon of every kind.
PMhters are having an unlucky time for |
lodder-pulllng. The yield will be surprisingly
light, and much ol lt badly damaged from ex?
posure to the weather. Forage is going to oe
scarce indeed.
For several years past the crossing of
Lynches Creek, near Bishopvllle, bas been in
very bad repair, often causing serious Incon?
venience to the travelling public. Recently
an attempt bas been made to improve its con?
dition on the Darlington side, where the prin?
cipal swamp Iles, by the construction of a
causeway and bridge; but either from the In?
competency or the cupidity of tbe contractor
the job has been so Imperfectly executed as to
amount to what ls worse than a failure. Be- ?
aides other objectionable features the embank?
ment is too narrow at Its base, and In places
the u<p ot lt ls below high-water mark. From
present appearances the road will become Im?
passable with wheels before long; Inaeed lt ls
well nigh so at this time. The dirt ls constant?
ly sloughing and sliding Into the large, deep
aitches on each side. The whole structure,
bridges and all, ls fictitious, and will be swept
away by the surging waters ot tbe next
freshet.
The contract was given by the Darlington
county commissioners to the lowest bidder,
who engaged to do the work tor eighteen hun?
dred dollars, a sufficient amount to have built
a safo, substantial and permanent causeway,
with ample margin for a handsome profit, if I
the job ls received by the commissioners. In | '
ita present condition, lt will be a shameful im?
position upon the already too oppressed tax?
payers. H. A. J.

Thc Quinlans Labarraqne is an eminently
tonic and febrifuge Wine, destined to replace
all the other preparations of Peruvian Hark
Thc Bork Wines usually employed inme
dicinc arc prepared from Barks which vary
considerably in (lie degree to which they
possess the desired properties. Besides,
owing to the manner in which they arc pre?
pared, these Wines contain scarcely more
than thc traces ol active principles, and
these always in variable proportions.
Thc Qoinium Labarraqne, approved by
the Academy of Medicine, constitutes, on the
contrary, a m?decine of determined compo?
sition, rich in active principles, and on wich
Physicians and Patients can always rely.
Thc Quinium Labarraqne is prescribed
with great success for persons of weak con
lilution, or for those debilitated by various
exhausting causes or past sickness ; for youths
fatigued by too rapid growth; for young
girls whose development take's place with
diflictllty; for women in childbirth; and for
jigcJ portons enfeebled by years or illness,
il is thc liest preservative against Fevers.
In cases of Chlorosis. Anemia, or Grcensik-*

thc ferruginous preparations. In conjunction,
