TO THE EDITOR OF TBE NEWS,
On the 28th day of November, 1870, Gover?
nor Scott sent Into the General Assembly a
message. In which the following extract ap
pears: "If I could close my term, knowing that
my efforts had been successful In making all
men feel once more that they have a common
Interest In the reputation and prosperity of the
State, I should rest content with myself and
thankful to the God of Peace, who used me as
bis Instrument. "
Yes, we think, after reading Cardozo's,
Parker's and his own letters, that he has been
an instrument in making people feel that it is
abont time that their common interest was
looked after, and that, too, ia a way that
would cot bring much contentment to his
weary soul, and a little different from his God
of Peace Intended. Our Idea of prosperity to
the State would be to make him and the
rest re timm large part of the common interest
they took from tbe people he desires to unite,
and that would give us a start towards that
kind of prosperity that South Carolina needs;
and the best way to do lt Is to help THE NEWS'

a colored planter, who has an excellent crop,
and has succeeded ia getting the first to

A FLAGRANT OUTRAGE.-Mrs. McAllen, a
respectable lady of this city, and possessed of |
considerable property, was carried b??fore
Trial Justice L. I. Woolf ou Taesday last,
charged with a breach of the peace, which,
ene alleges, was uever committed. T?e Justice
aeoteoced her to pay twenty-five dollars and
costs, and oa her refusal to comply, seat her
to jail without allowing lime enough for the
production of security. Mrs. McAllen remained
la jail until after nightfall, wheo one of her
relatives bearing of her disagreeable situation
weat to the Jail and secured her release by
paying the floe and costs.

those of land and sea. This was brought to
the attention of Major Stevens, the post com?

man promptly and courteously gave his in?

ld the afternoon. The first performance will
take place to morrow, wheo the Battery is sure
