Hunter sent to THE NEWS office yesterday a
bunch of the delicious Lachrymal Christi grape,
grown by hin in Charleston on vines brought
ont from Sicily three years ago. The grapes
were exceedingly large and fine, and had only
one fault._

Thomas Gainsborough, the great landscape

Winiam Bulus, was accidentally killed on the
2d of August, A. D. 1100, by a bolt from a cross
bow, shot by one of his courtiers at a deer,
while hunting in New Forest, Hamps aire.

olina, and, we learn, proceeded in an elegant

office. When the Lodge was closed the bretu
ren partook of a supper in Chapman's Hall,
where, in addition to the repast of good thiBgs,
they were regaled by the string band and sli?
ver cornet band. At the removal of the cloth,
Grand Master Mlms waB called for, when he
gave those present a very interesting speech
After which several others were called upon,
eliciting a number o? felicitous little talks
Altogether the evening was most pleasantly

DROWNING AND INQUESTS_On Friday, July
the 19 h. three negroes, Jacob McKelvey, Au?
gust Smal and Julia Mitchell, were drowned
while attempting to cross the western branch
of Cooper BI ver. in a small boat from Glebe
plantation, on the east, to Manchester on the
west, A few days later the body of Jacob
MoKelvey waa recovered and an Inquest held

United States Circuit Court.
Wm. J. McLaughlin and H. W. Henderson,
under sentence of ten years each for violation
of the enforcement act, were ordered to be
transfered from the State to the penitentiary
at Albany, New York.

The Injonction Against the City
Council,
On motion of City Attorney Corbin, Jadge
Graham yesterday issued an order requiring
the Enterprise Railroad Company forthwith to
restore the streets damaged by them to their
orleinal condition, and prohibiting them from
making any further disturbance of the soil
except for thc purpose of repairing the dam?
age a. ready done. It also provides that the
City Council can make application to the
court to Impose terms upon the company,
phould the latter fall to comply with the re?
quirements of the order within a reasonable
time.
Trial Justice Courts.
Messrs. A. Moroso and G. W. Rouse, mem?
bers of the Charleston Joint Stock Company,
were arrested yesterday and carried before
Trial Justice A. M. Mackey on a charge of con?
ducting a lottery. Both were bound over to
appear at the October term of the Criminal
Court; the former In the Bum of two thousand
and the latter in five thousand dollars.
Before the United States Commissioner.
Dr. 8. Banister, of St, Stephen's Depot, on
the Northeastern Railroad, wa?Pcarrled before
Commissioner Porteous yesterday, charged
with a violation of the Internal revenue law,
and was bound over to appear at the October ?
term of the United States Court.
The car -s of two other persons charged with
a similar offence were continued for a further j
examination. _
A SORRY AFFAIR.
The Radical Mass Meeting Last Night.
The Radical mass meeting, held last night
at the Military Hall, was an emphatic failure.
At nine o'clock about one hundred negroes'
composed chiefly of Courthouse loungers and
the hangers-on at the trial Justices' offices,
were huddled In the centre of the floor,
seeming strangely few in BO large a hall.
Ex-Mayor Pillsbury was called to the chair
and made a few remarks, signally failing to
explain the objects of the meeting, about
which, as he confessed, he knew nothing at
all. The big gun.?, speaker Moses and Con?
gressmen DeLarge and Rainey, having failed
to appear, Lieutenant-Governor Banaler was
called upon as a last resort, and after weary?
ing his hearers with a long introduction,
launched off into a boundless sea of vitupera?
tion and ab?me. He hoped that his tongue
would cleave to the roof of his month before
he uttered an unkind word against that great
and good man, Mr. Charles Sumner. But
he attributed tbat gentleman's opposition to
President Grant to motives of personal pique
and malignity, caused by his removal from the
committee on foreign affairs. He was equally
considerate to Mr. Greeley; was very grateful
to him for his services in behalf of the colored
people in the past; would vote for him if he
believed the liberties of tbat people could now
be trusted in his hands, and at last disposed of |
the Sage by pronouncing him intellectually In?
capable of filling the Presidential chair. He
tried to Inflame the minds of his audience on
the subject of the Savannah riot; that was a

to bear if the Liberals triumphed. He con
eluded by making a few vague allusions to j
State and county funds, declining to give trie
names of any parties connected therewith,
and by feebly urging the necessity for reform.
This fitly ended the meeting.

period ha? been on the whole somewhat less prom?
ising, and In this vicinity the wea her bas been ex
tremelydry, with burning heat, the effect or which
has been deleterious to the cotton plant, particu?
larly on the sea islands. In portions or the south?
west tho rains have bee? Injurions, but to what
extent ls as yet an cor tain. Two additional bales
of new cot con, making three tn all, have arrived
at New Orleans from Texas, and several bales
rn ra the Ouachita River, which, at ti rs'., were
supposed to be new, were afterwards pronounced
spurious.
THE RECEIPTS.-The arrivals at the cottoB
ports Tor the week np to Friday last were 2566
bales against 2419 bales the week before and
10,900 bales for the corresponding time last year.
At New Orleans the supplies were 461 ba es In
contrast with 4518 bales for the week of the year
previous. The total receipts at the cotton ports
from September l, 1871, up to the latest dates were
2,706,734 bales, against 3,971,267 bales the year
before, showing a decrease of i,264.753 bales.
