. A BARBARIC BARBECOI THE POLITICAL CdMPAiaVJ* * GROVES OF CHRIST CBVRCH. Bowen and Mackey on MM? War Pa Pre. Speech, Free Whi.Uey an Free Figttt. _ Toe time for roasting oxen ls come, ant voice of the spouter ls heard la the land, season ol barbecues ls upon us, and the combe of the politician is awaking the ec of the sea Island groves, not unmiDgled the music of the flying brickbat, the wt the argumentative club and the crack ol persuasive piBtol. Tbe demagogues are g about like a roaring lion seeking whom may proselyte, and yesterday they lnvadei peaceful pariah of Christ Church. The g apostle of the occasion was, as usual, M C. Bowen, who is making a sort of trium progress through the strongholds of Rad Ism in Charleston County, and Is ev where adding dusky thousands to his p< cal following. He has already come and s and conquered John's Island, "Jee Island, and a dozen other places where philosophers of the rice-fields most doi gregate, and yesterday he captured Cl Church. Mr. Bowen, however, was not tined on this occasion to have everything own way, nor was it an altogether blood victory) that he achieved. His ancient j mies, the Mackey faction, were present in force, and by some prearranged plan Bowenltes and Mackeyites occupied alt*rn ly the dismounted spring cart tilted again live-oak tree which formed the improrn platform. The Bowen cohorts reached parish by an early boat from Charleston, proceeding to the place of meeting euph oosly known as the Four-mile Post Chut Smithville, tossed the first hat into the ring to speak, by electing OL F. North chairo and T. Osborn secretary, and elevating Cy Gaillard to the speakers' stand. There i then a crowd of six or seven hundred negri upon the ground, which increased Io I oourse of the day to over a thousand. Th< was not a darkey at work in the cotton fie for miles around, and there was hardly "auntie" orV'raauma" in the parish who w not at the meeting. To describe the ere would be a task of no small difficulty, t doubtless if Dr. Livingstone ever gets aw from Africa and writes bis long promised bo a leaf from his notes ol TJJijI or TJgogo will as well. Prominent among the reeking ai ecstatic mass was a company'ot colored m ll it and they would deserve a whole column ofd< criptlon to themselves. Falstaff's ragged i cral ts would be In comparison well dressed ai well disciplined soldiers. Their attempts at uniform were confined to attaching upon vai ous portions of their ordinary garments BU dry bits ci bright-colored tape, while the o? eera proudly bore their insignia of rank in tl ?nape of patches of tinsel upon their shoul ere. These were supposed to belong Colonel Mackey's command, and on the an val of the ten o'clock boat from Charlestc they mustered in loree at the landing to r? calve thesherlfTsndhis party and escort thei to the ground. With these iresh arrivals tb fun commenced. Gaillard, the ebon-hued on tor, who had possession of the stump, wa heaping energetic anathemas upon the Tafi Mackey party, reminding his auditors that the owed no thanss to them tor the arms wit which they had been furnished, and adjurln them, with occasion ai bursts of true native eic quence, to send Scott, Mackey and all th rest of the plunderers so far out of the Stat that they would never co n.e back 13 it, so tbs poor men could live and rich men could than God. The Mackey party soon created a divei sion in favor of their candidatos, and a speake on their side by the name of Broody was DU op to address the meeting. Next, Bowen tool the stand, and pitched Into the frauds of th? Scott ring with great effect, his excited hear erg shouting and screaming with applause. Et was followed by Sheriff Mackey, who accused Bowen of being a Democrat, but apparent lj failed to convince nis audience of that fact. Then Bowen resumed the stand, and promised " to handle Mackey without gloves. In fact, these two shining lights of Republicanism threw unlimited mud upon each other's record, doubtless with much truth, and with varying effect upon the sable audi? ence. T J en outside spectator who did not happen to know them both as honest and ex? emplary gentlemen, lt would really appear that they were the two veriest scoundrels that ever went nnhung; but Bowen had the best o? it with his audience, because he was showing ap the frauds of the Scott Bing, which have become so patent by thl6 time that even the negroes begin tb realice them. W^hlle all this mutual mud-throwing was going OD. a syndicate of lusty, k"maumas" were cooking the stew for dlnapc in huge iron ket? tles, and a crowd of volunteers were erecting an impromptu table, lo front of a huge log, on Wblohsat an expectant and hungry-looking cr?wd of blacks. The listeners around the stand began to smell the kitchen and to Ure of eloquence, and th? Interruptions became numerous and threat en lag. One coal black field hand mounted ant opposition cart while Mackey was speaking, and orated against the "town buckra," until a bystander, in the Interest of peace, tilted up the shafts ot the cart and shot the orator out upon the ground. Similar side-shows were frequent, and lt was hard to tell what the bveakers were talking about, except the gene? ral fact that they were abusing each, otter, and that Bowen was ahead. When Bowen bad ooocladed Sam Dickerson was put up, and, pitched into the Scott-Mackey parties.in ruo very choice or measured language, and County Commissioner McLaughlin followed on the . same side. While McLaughlin was speaking; the hungry darkles could stand it no longer, and a rush was made for the barbecue bread, one thousand loaves of which the provident Bowen had brought, and this brought on a general fight. The militia charged upon the orowd with fixed bayonets, and "the colored troops fought nobly." The crowd, however, was hungry and desperate, many of them were mot e than half drunk, and they were ably assisted by their better halves who had also been freeley imbibing, and who aptly illustrated the statement of the poet, "Hell has no fury like a woman corned.'> The fight resulted In the serious wounding of one colored man and slight injuries sus? tained by half a dozen others. Finally, the defendants of the beef and bread gave way, the dusky combatants gorged themselves therewith, and as the shades of nights were closing over Smithville they straggled home? ward, making night hideous with their doleful yells._ DEATH OF A PROMINENT GERMAN.-Mr. Edle F.
