The Union Times says: -A Columbia cor?
respondent of THE CHARLESTON NEWS states
that a batch of warrants over a foot thick hap
been issued for the arrest of citizens of this
county for violations of the enforcement act.
Our private opinion is that either .the corres?
pondent Is mistaken or lt is one of Walleee's
.bluff* games to drive out and Intimidate the
white voters of this county who are opposed
lo him. II the latter game Is to be played, we
hope all our people will meet these warrants
like brave men. Let no man leave the
county, and, above all, let no man sell himself
to such an infamous scheme, by compromising
his Inalienable right to vote according to the
honest dictates or his conscience."
Tbe Sartor Outlaw*.
The Union Times says: "We learn that Bill
Sartor, the notorious thief who was sentenced
at the last term of court tor this county to two
years' imprisonment in the State Penitentiary,
made bis escape from that place last Saturday
night, and bas joined bis brother Bob, who ls
at large and committing many depredations
in this county. After the latter shot Mr. Wil?
lard, ot which we gave an account In our last
issue, a party of four or five took out a war?
rant to arrest bim. In their search on Ur.
Young's plantation, they found, in a negro
nouse, two trunks and about three hundred
dollars' worth ot goods'whlch had been stolen
from Colonel A. G. Rice some weeks ago, be?
sides other goode. We are informed that they
have been selling goods in different parts of
the county at remarkably low prices. These
men are perfect outlaws, and, it they are not
arrested soon, they will increase their gang
and commit some serious outrage in the coun?
ty. We hope the authorities will make a
strong effort to have them arrested, This is
the second time that Bill Sartor has escaped
from the Penitentiary since he was sentenced."
A f ruitless Raid In Santnr.
Tuesday nient, a party of Federal soldiers,
accompanied "by a deputy marshal, made a
fruitless raid down la Santuc, which ls a love?
ly region lying south and east of Union C. H.
The object ot the raid was to capture an out?
law by the name of John Benfield, who ls un?
der numerous Indictments for criminal of?
fences, and ?who bas up to date successfully
evaded every attempt to capture him either
on the part of the civil or military authorities.
He ls a desperate character and ls excessively
annoying to the people among whom he bas
taken up his abode.
JOTTINGS ABOUT THE STATE.
-The engine and tender of the Spartanburg
train ran oil on Monday. Nobody hurt.
-The lury room at Unlonvllle boasts of a
table, a small bench, and one bottomless chair.
-An effort ls making to remove the George?
town postmaster and put a Massachusetts man
In his placa.
-The couru martial which has been In ses?
sion in Columbia for some time past, engaged
in the trial of Lieutenant Gallagher, of the
Second Infantry, on various charges, adjourned
on Saturday. The supposition Is that he has
been honorably acquitted.
-Major J. H. Barry, of Bock Hill, was this
week convicted of an assault and battery upon
Congressman Wallace last summer. The
"buttermilk case" lt will be remembered.
He was sentenced tu six months'Imprison?
ment or one hundred dollars fine. He paid
the fine and was discharged.
-A prisoner by the name ol Cohen, who Is
awaiting trial on the charge of murder, at?
tempted to escane from the Beaufort jail,
early on Wednesday morning last. He was
captured by another prisoner named Isaac
Simmons, who ls acting as turnkey. Just as he
was going over the lenee, at the back of the
Jail.
-Mr. Jackson, the Columbia chief of police,
has succeeded in overhauling two thieves who
have been operating In d?n?rent portions ot
the State. One of them stole a horse in Lau?
rens, and the other robbed the store of Messrs.
J. Ell Gregg & Co., in Marion. The horse and
a portion of the other stolen property were
recovered.
-A letter from Willlamston Springs, on the
Greenville and Columbia Railroad, states that
a house near the depot was struck by light?
ning on tbe afternoon of Thursday, the 18th,
and considerably damaged. A cradle In which
an Infant was sleeping was set on fire, but
none of the inmates ot the bouse were serl
ouslv Injured, though stunned.
-The house ol Mr. C. Bouknlght, of Colum?
bia, was raided upon Friday night-the fourth
time during the past year-and his pants, con?
taining tbe safe key of the treasurer's office of
the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad
Company, carried off-nothing el6e touched.
Mrs. Bouknlghi's watch and jewelry, besides
the silver in dally use, were on me bureau
adjacent, but were undisturbed. Aa there was
a considerable sum of money In the safe, lt
was feared that the thief had effected an en?
trance to lt, but, upon examination yesterday
morning, everything was found ult right.
-The Governor has pardoned Kizzie Dam?
pier, Jane Dampier, Adella Norwood, of Dar?
lington, and William Durham, of Greenville.
The three first named were sentenced by
Judge Rutland, on charge of receiving stolen
goods, to twelve months' Imprisonment, and
ere pardoned upon the petition ot numerous
citizens and ihe sworn stalemeul of the prin?
cipal witness that he swore falsely in the case.
Durham was convicted of ibe crime of man?
slaughter at the May, 1872, term ot the Green?
ville Court, and was sentenced to two years In
the penitentiary by Judge Orr. The Jury hav?
ing recommended tbe prisoner lo mercy, and
on account of bis extreme youth, and other
mitigating circumstances, the judge recom?
mends the pardon be granted.
