Hopes of Keller from Rad leal Rule.
The people of Florida have been tried as by
fire. For seven long and weary years they
have been compelled to submit to carpet-bag
and scalawag mle. But the disasters that
have fallen upon the people have only drawn
them closer together, and every act of oppres- j
alon has only made them more determined to
work together for the resurrection of good
government. Our Information from the State I
ls to the effect that the Conservatives are or- j
gan I zing in every county, and that the en thu- J
Blasm of the approaching gubernatorial calm
pai?p is extending into sections whloh have
heretofore bee*n somewhat apathetic.
There la Strong hopes that If the State Con?
vention, soon to meet lu Jacksonville, will
make Judicious nominations, the fall elections {
will culminate in a Conservative victory.
There ls an Irreconcilable split in the Radical
party. Harrison Beed, the governor, leads
one motion, while Osborn la the leader of the
oidier. .The following ot the one ls among the j
State office-holders, while the adherents of
the other are io be found in the Federal offl
I*?.' The Jacksonville Union ls the organ of
Osborn, while the Tallahassee Sentinel, a pa?
per conducted with considerable ability, la
rather favorable to Beed.
AB things considered, the Conservatives
have a very fair prospect of rescuing their |
State trom the carpet-baggers and scalawags,
and if the campaign is conducted with any?
thing like the vigor with which lt bas been
Inaugurated, the result will be an undoubted
Democratic victory. On the other' hand the
Radicals will exhaust every means and resort
to every fraud to retain their power. They
will stuff ballot-boxes, auppresa returns and
reject votes without number, and tbe Conserv?
atives wUl have to be wary and vigilant.

will be chosen as the Conservative candidate.

There ls no longer any question that the
supporters ol General Grant are now thorough?
ly alarmed in regard to the election In North
Carolina. The Beform movement, wbloh
seemed to have very little strength in that
State a few months ago, has made suoh rapid
progress that even the sanguine people about
the Executive Mansion begin to nave; serious
fears. They naturally resort to the only means [
they believe ln-force and money. It ls re
?ned that the United States marshal for North
roll na left Washington on Monday for
Raleigh, with $200.000 in government funds,
which nave been drawn from the treasury for
the ostensible purpose ot meeting the expenses
ol the United States Courts. It will be very ?
easy for the office-holders to divert a large
proportion of tills lund to campaign purposes.
The plan ls tc make a large number of arrests
of persons accused of the commission ol Ku
Klux offences one or two- years ago, and then
to bring in large and fictitious bills for fees .
and mileage. In this way money may be ob- j
talned for the canvass while the close counties
are terrorized by the constant succession ot |
arrests. There are already over five hundred
persons under Indictment, and the officers
have the names of a large number in addition
who have been marked for arrest.
The Grant people do not intend to rely even
upon these extensive resources of violence and
corruption. Enormous collections of money I
are now making In this city and elsewhere to
be sent into the State ot North Carolina. The
screws have been put to the office-holders and

llie expectants of office. The trading Inter?
ests of the great cities which Imagine they can
make something by the election of General
Grant have been plentltnlly bled. The ascauit
which ls to be made upon me purity of the
ballot-box In North Carolina will bu one In
which energy and shamelessness bas never
been surpassed. Against all this the Opposi?
tion have nothing but the strength ol iheir
cause and the determination which this gives
them. They have no courts, no customhouses*;
no postofflces; they are destitute of these ap?
pliances of force and terror of which the
Grant people dispose. They cannot use the
writs, the sheriff's posses, the handcuffs and
the Jails whioh exercise so powerful an influ?
ence upon the spirits ot men in rural commu?
nities. They have no money. Thry have been
too thoroughly shorn to have anything left for j
political purposes. They must make this fight |
against great odds. Bul, unless every sign
falls, they will win in spite of all the money
and the power of Washington. If any of the
ancient spirit of the people of the Old North
State is left among them, they will show the
hucksters who are trying to make merchan?
dise of them that lt is easier to Bell a State
tban lt la to deliver it. We believe the cash
which ls now pouring into Non h Carolina will |
prove the worst Investment ol the year.
