THE MORTUARY REPORT.-The return of the

SENT TO JAIL_Frederick Gadsden, colored,
was carried before Trial Justice Lovett yester?
day for commltilng an assault and battery on
William Campbell. He was sent to Jail for
twenty days, and it having transpired that he
had also beaten his wile, thirty days were
added to his sentence.
ACQUITTED.-Tb<_> cases of Officers Nlpson
and K?*nny, of this c'ty, and Messrs. Johnson
and Murphy, of Atlanta, charged with false I

FREAKS OF THE LIGHTNING.-During the I
storm of Saturday the lightning ::ruck the
building on R .-Maud avenue, Aiken, occupied I
as an office by Dr. A. Coffin, slightly damaging
lt. Later in the evening it struck the Highland
Park Hotel, but did no damage. This makes j
the fifth time lightning has struck at some
point in Aiken within the past week.
HARD UP AND HARD ON.-Alice Brown, a 11

THE PORT ROYAL RAILROAB.- The Augusta
Chronicle of yesterday says: '?Work on this
end of the Port Royal Railroad is progressing
rapidly. We understand that the track will
soon bo laid from this city to the Savannah
River. Operations are also progressing with
great rapidity upon the other end of the Port
Royal Riilroad. We learn that the line will
be completed to Allandale, in Aiken County,
by the middle or latter par: of this week. If
nothing untoward pr?v?ts the completion of
the bridge across the Savannah, lt will not be I
long before the excursion trip to Beaufort will
take place."_ I
OR05?B9.-An accident to the machinery of
the Mount Pleasant ferry boat caused an
hour's delay yesterday morning.
Hereafter the fee for money orders at any I
postofflce for ten dodars or less will be five
cents, and for larger sums the old rates.
The boots and shoes recovered on Sunday I
by Officers Nlpson and Kenny were found in
Elliott, not Percy street. I
Passengers on the down-train of the Oreen- j
ville and Columblp Railroad report heavy
rains through the up-country, which will
prove disastrous to the crops.
The Augusta Chronicle says that the pro-1
traded rains are causing vegetables and mel
ons-watermelons and cantaloupes-to decay
before ripening. !
On Tuesday of last week, Mr. Mower, hailing
from this State, and en route to a Northern
State, took lodgings at the hotel of Colonel J. I
W. Morris, In Guldaboro', N. C., where he was
soon alter taken ill, and expired at an early
hour on last Wednesday morning. The nnfor-1
t?nate man's wife accompanied him.
CLUBS AND P TARS.-George Lartle, James
Armstrong e.nd John Smith, the colored boys
who were caught stealing water melons on
the Neck on Monday alternoon, were sent to
the House of Correction tor twenty days.
Christopher Leslie, a small colored boy,
found asleep on Monday night in a doorway
en the corner of King and Vanderhorst
streets, was sent to his home.
Isaoella Whaley. the colored woman who
created a disturbance on Meeting street Mon-'
day, was sent to the House of Correction for
ten days.
John Quarry, colored, was fined one dollar
for conducting himself In a disorderly manner
npon the premises of Mr. Smith, in Montague
street. ,
William Green, an Irate colored citizen,
Created a riot on the corner of Church and
Chalmers streets Monday night, and was
taken to the Guardhouse. Yesterday morn?
ing he paid two dollars and recovered his
good humor.

docks. The man escaped, aod the ducks are

William Hicks and John Lucas had a pu

HEB TINO OF CITY COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of Council was held
yesterday afternoon at five o'clock; present
the Ma\or and Aldermen O'Neill, BJ wen,
Vulgt, Gage, Sweegan, Johnston, Moran,
Brown, 81monds, 8igwald and Garrett. The
minutes of the last meeting were read and
confirmed.
The petition of M. H. Collies, praying
that he be paid for fifteen thousand four bun*
dred pounds chloride of lime, furnished dur?
ing the Pillsbury administration, was referred
to the committee on retrenchment and Mief.
A petition of certain citizens of Ward 8 pray?
ing that several additional lamps be putin
Spring street and In the neighborhood of
Gadsden's Green, was referred to the commit?
tee on lighting streets.
The petition of E. M. Fuller, praying to be
relieved from taxes, was referred to the com?
pt?e on retrenchment and relief.
A petition from a number of residents of
Mee ti nir, near Calhoun street, requesting that
certain noisy balls of frequent occurrence In
their vicinity be prohibited, was referred to
the chief of police. Tne Mayor stated that
steps bad already been taken to correct the
nuisance.
Th? petition of a number of citizens to have
a shell pavement laid on the south side of
Morris street, from King to Rutledge, was re?
ferred to the street Inspector.
The Mayor stated that the health officer, Dr.
R. Lebby, bad called upon him and showed
tne draft of the comptroller on the State
treasurer for the quarantine appropriation,
which draft had not been paid, and suggested
that the draft be deposlied with the city treas?
urer, and that Dr. Lebby be allowed to draw
such sums as he may need from time to time
for the maintenance ot the coast quarantine.
The suggestion was confirmed by Council.
The petition of Joseph Samson, requesting
that Connell purchase a map of Charleston,
showing the plan of the city at an early period,
was referred to the Mayor with power to act.
A communication from the city registrar,
containing the report o? the committee on
hospitals and dispensaries, was relerred to the
committee on public Institutions.
A communication from the chief of the fire
department, stating that "he bad obtained ihe
concent ol Mr. Chadwick to nae the cistern
under the Academy of Music for fire purposes,
provided that the city would pay for the neces?
sary pipes to bring the water to the streets,
wat* referred to the committee on contracts,
with instructions to advertise for estimates.
The return of the city sheriff for June was
referred to the committee on accounts.
The report from the City Hospital was read
and received as information.
The petition of B. H. Rutledge and w. D.
DeSAussure, referees or the estate of Z. B.
Oakes, tor a remission of penalties, was re?
ported upon unfavorably by the committee on
retrenchment and relief; ?ad the report was
adopted by Council.
The report of i he city engineer, showing
that the tidal drains were in good working
order, was received as information.
The Major mentioned that be hoped to per?
fect arrangements to establish a small-pox
hospital on James island.
The committee on ?treets reported unfavor?
ably on the petition of C. T. Lowndes, trustee
of John Fraser & Co , to transfer property on
East Bay street to the cit; in liquidation ot
past-due taxes.
The special committee on the Fire Depart?
ment reported favorably on the removal of the
bouse of Comet Fire Engine Company, No. 6,
from the sonthwest corner ot Beaufaln and
Rutledge streets, and suggested that a suita?
ble wooden building be erected for them on
the weet side of Smith, between Beaufaln and
Queen streets. The report was adopted. The
same committee reported unfavorably on the
communication of the Board of Flremasters
suggesting a change of the dre districts from
three to two.
The committee also suggested, in reference
to a petition to put alarm bells lo the cupolas
of the Marlon Engine-House and the Alms?
house, that a suitable bell be put in the cu?
pola ol the Marlon Engine House, and as
there ls already % good bell In the cupola of
the Almshouse that arrangements be made to
have the same rung during fires.
The petition of oertain residents upon glebe
land to have taxes remitted, with the opinion
of the city attorney thereon, being rather a
lengthy document, was ordered to bje printed
and laid upon the desks ol the aldermen.
There being no further business, council
then adjourned.
