BURGLARY TS ATLANTA.

boots and shoes waa committed lu Atlanta,
Ga?, but until recently no clue could be found
that wou d lead to the discovery ot the peroe

Accordingly two officers, armed with the

their requisitions endorsed by Governor
Scott, pursued ?jeir way. hither. The BUR
peo'.ed parties, two la number, were arrested
g on Sunday In E llott street, under the names
of John and 3arah Hackett. John proved to
be no other than Gus Williams, an old offVnd
er of notorious odor. His name ls to be j
found on many pages of the police records.
When arrested he was wearing a pair of boots
. amped with the name, of the person upon
whom the burglary waa committed. After the
arrest Officers Nipson and Kenny recovered
a large number of the stolen shoes and boots
la a house on Percy street. Sheriff Mackey,
yesterday, refuged to deliver up the prisoners
to the A: lan1 a officers, on the ground* that
there is a warrant now ont against, them for a
larceny subsequently committed in this city.
The Atlanta officers .returned to Columbia last
evening to confer with O ?vernor Scott, and lt
ls reported that Sheriff Mackey accompanied
them. A singular circumstance connected

terday against Officers Nipson and Kenny for

ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN_A diabolical
attempt was made on Sunday by some un?
known parties to throw a passenger train on
the Savannah and Charleston Railroad from
the track, at SaUkahatchie bridge, by laying
several bars of railroad Iron across the track
In a manner that would certainly have precipi?
tated the engine, and perhaps the whole train,
Into the river. Fortunately, the obstructions
were observed by the engineer In time to stop
the train and remove them. Proper measures
have b?en taken to have the culprits arrested.
CRUMBS.-The horse of a darkey, who was
driving In gay style down King street after
the rain yesterday morning, slipped and fell
flat on his side muoh to the discomfiture of tLs
driver and amusement ot the little boys
The remains of William Kamplera were
taken to the Seamen's Cemetery, and not to
Potters'Field, as stated in Tan Nxws jester
day.
The Protestant Episcopal Society for the
advancement of Christianity in South Carolina
did not hold a meeting last evening, no
quorum being present.
DIST?RBANOS IN MEETING STREET_Isabella
Wnaley, a colored woman, quarrelled with a
negro man, yesterday, on Meeting street, near
the Charleston Hotel, and proceeded to vent
her rage upon him in the shape of a sbower of
brickbats. The man broke a stick, which he
held, over her head, and thus becoming dis?
armed retreated Into Pinckney street. The
infuriated -Isabella pursued bim closely, and
the termination of the affiir wou'd doubtless
have been serious had not Clubs and Stars
come np in the nick of time and marched the
pair off to the Guardhouse. They will have a
hearing this morning. As usual a large orowd
assembled to witness the fight.

RAILROAD SMASHES.-On Saturday last a
freight tralQ on the Charlotte, Columbia and

ed, causing a detention of the ap-passenger

Sunday morning. Five or six freight cars
were demolished. The accident was caused
by a broken axle.

This court opened at 10 A. M. yesterday.
