Dolly Varden.
BY BRET HARTE
Dear Dolly 1 who does not recall
The thrilling pa?e thai pictured all
-These charms that held our sense in thrall
r jost aa ti:c artist caught her
As down that Knghsti lane ? he tripped,
In flowered chintz, hat sideways Upped,
Trim bodlced, brU?ht-eyed, roguish-lipped
The locksmith's pretty darner t
Sweet fragjant or the Master's ait !
? simple raith l O rus lc heart I
0 maid that bath no oonnterpart
in lire's dry, dog-eared pages !
Where shad we hud thy like? Ah, stay !
Methinks I saw her yesterday
In chintz that flowea, as one might say,
Perennial for ages.
Her father's modest cot was stone.
Five stories high. lu style - nd toue
Composite, aud, I frankly own,
Within Its walis reveadng
Some certain novel, strange ideas;
A Gothic door with Roman piers,
And Hoon removed some thousand years
From their Pompellan ceiling.
The small salon where she received,
With Louis Quauoze, and relieved
By Chinese cabinets, conceived
Grotesquely by the heathen;?
The sofas were a oiassic sight
The Roman bench (sedllla hUht;)
The chairs were Freuch, In gold and white,
And one Elizabethan.
And abo. the goddess of that shrine,
Two ringed Augers placed lu mine
The stones were many carats flue,
And of the pnrtst water
Then dropped a courtsey, far enough
To fairly nil her cretonne put!
And show thc petticoat's rich stuff
That her fond parents bought lier.
Her speech was simple as her dress
Not French the more, ont English less,
She loved; yet sometimes, I confess,
1 scarce could comprehend her.
Her manners were quite rar rrom shy ;
The.-e was a quiet lu ber eye
Appalling to the Hugh who'd try
With rudeness to (>"end her.
ut whence." I ci led. "thia masquerade ?
Some figure for to-nlgut's charade
A Watteau shepherdess or maid ?"
She smiled aud begged my pardon ;
"Why, surely yon must know the name
That woman who was Shakespeare's flame,

Why, Lord I I'm Dolly Yardea I"

An Intelligent and Interesting Report.
[PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
BlSHOPVILLK, 8. C., July L
Tho crops make a lar more interesting ap?
pearance at this date than they presented a
month ago. The long season ol drought was
relieved on th? Uth and 15ih of June by an
abundant fall of rain which was, of course,
too late for benefiting small grain, but came
In a most opportune time for the corn crop,
which was evidently evincing a retrograde
movement. There have been plentiful show
ers recently In this locality, and clouds are
passing in Bight nearly every day.
Corn is almost In general Bilk and tassel, and
is considerably smaller than at this lime last
year, but that, as well as all other crops, ls In
good condition, farmers having had no diffi?
culty in keeping grass under control, and tin?
der the Invigorating influence of high seasons ,
henceforth lt may turn out v?ny well, notwith?
standing the di minmi vc size of tho stalk. The
yield of fodder will be lessened, though lt may
equal last year's, much fodder having then
been lost by tbe hot, dry weather in July and
August. The condition of the weather through?
out the past mouth has been most favorable
lor promoting the growth of cotton; the early
planting ls now anead ol the same date last
\ear and moving at a "double-quick." The
lateaHaods are In a healthy growing state, but
are far behind the older cotton, and will re?
quire a very late fall to mature a lull crop.
Toe past dry season has been most detri?
mental to gardens, and as poor vegetables are
not recollected to have been seen since the
j war. It now appears that the fruit crop will
not be so abundant alter all the fine prospect
some time ago. Many ot the peaches have
already fallen prematurely, a circumstance
the more remarkable from the fact that there
was no cold or frost In the spring to Injure
them.
Ic is gratifying to observe the marked prom?
inence that ls accorded by the press this sea
Ron to the agricultural Interest ol the South;
and the Indications that the Southern farmers
are waking up to an appreciation of the Im?
portance of giving to the world accurate aud
reliable information respecting the condition
and prospect of the great staple are hailed
with much satisfaction. They nave suffered
enough from the Injurious effects of ill-founded
and exaggerated estimates made in the inter?
est of speculation. The remedy to this evil ls
in their own hands; the counteracting influ
' ena lies with them. Since estimates will be
made, and the price ot cotton ls sure to be
more or leas affected by them, lt ls all-impor?
tant that the nearest possible approximation
to the truth be had.
An allusion in a late number of THE NEWS
to the forthcoming report ol' the agricultural
department reminds us that it Is still In exist?
ence; but for tbe absence of any notice ol Its
dissolution, or any tribute ol respect to depart
eu worth, one might have concluded that the
bureau had gone-"up the spout." It is earn?
estly hoped that it may do a little better guess?
ing this year than lc did last, seeing lt blt so
wide of the mark In Its estimate ot the last
cotton crop. No doudt much loss to the plant?
ers j* H s incurred by the depressing Influence
lis published statements exercised up?n the? |
price of cotton In "the fall months, when so j
much of the staple was necessarily- thrown
upon the market. The first estimate ol the
department was three and a half millions ol
bales. A ?-oference to the latest reports ot to?
tal receipts of cotton will give a very correct
idea ol the discrepancy between the actual
and the estimated yield.
Very little attention has been given to poll- I
tics up to this time. The white population ls
lukewarm. The colored element exhibits
some signs of political life. There has been
one gathering at which there ls said to have
been a good deal ot speaking by the under?
strappers and offrcc-seekers. H. A. J.

j Prospect* for Cotton Continue Good.
INDIANTOWN, 8. C., Jilly 1
During the past week several refreshing
alto wera have fallen in different parts of this
county. Immediately at this place a fine
shower fell on last Saturday, but it was not
Seneral, and portions of the county are still
ry and suffering. Crops in this vicinity are
looking excellently, especially cotton. They
have been worked better, and are in belter
condition than any previous year since the
war, in fact this has been the best year for cul- !
tlvating crops that we had since the close ol
the war. The past three months have been so
uniformly dry that grasB could injure no crop
where the least industry was exercised by the
cultivator. I have heard many planters Buy
they hf ver saw belter prospects for a fine cot?
ton crop at this season of the year, Gardens
have been very mucrrtnjured by the dry weath?
er, and very lew have such vegetables as they
had last year. Politically, all is quiet here ar,
present. The Radicals of this county will,
probably, go in a mass for Grant. Greeley
and Brown are strongly endorsed by the Dem
ocrats. Ju VEN?S.
