THREATENED SUSPENSION OF THE |
QUARANTINE.
The startling announcement appeared In the
Columbia Uolon a few dajB ago, on the au?
thority of Ur. Lebby, the health officer of the
port of Charleston, "that, owing te the want
of funds for quarantine purposes, he will prob?
ably be obliged to raise '.he quarantine from
Georgetown to the coast of Georgia on the
18th July," and Dr. Lebby, who has just re?
turned from Columbia, repeats the statement,
and Bays that all his efforts to obtain any por?
tion of the liberal appropriation made by the
!a?t Legislature for the quarantine service
have utterly failed. He sa.? s that twenty-five
hundred dollars ls the minimum amount re?
quired to malnain the quarantine uutll next
fall, and a warrant for that amount was drawn
last week by the comptroller-general, but, on
presentation to the treasurer, it was met by
the stereotyped reply, "No money In the
treasury." He has since been making every
effort to ?blala lile, money from the treasurer,
and he sa) s he has been assisted to the extent
of their power by Governor Scott and Comp
troller-Geueral Neagle, but without Buccess,
and he now sees no resource but to raise the
quarantine, and abandon the coast to Its
chances ol inf. dion. The crew ol' the quar?
antine boat at Bull River have already got
tired of walting for their pay, and abandoned
the boat last week, but Dr. Lebby has already
made private arrangements to pay another j
crew for the present, at least, and the quaran?
tine Is re-establish ed.

publican, lor the purpose of organizing tor tue
campaign. The appointment ot an executive
cotumlitee and other business ol Importance
will be brought iorward lor consideration.
AUDACIOUS. BOBBERT.-Another daring and
astounding''achievement of the gang of bur- j
glare who appear to be Infesting the city re?
mains to be recorded. Last Thursday eve?
ning the residence of Mr. Burnham, on Hud?
son street, was entered by burglars,' who made
their way to-the sleepy apartment of that
gentleman, aoA?ciou8ly picked up and exam
jntuwaOuble-barreled rifle which Mr. Burn?
ham keeps at his bedside expressly for target
praciice upon such visitors, and then coolly
helped themselves to the contents of bis purse
and var'ons other portables about the room..
No alarm was caused, and the robbery was not
discovered until on awaking yesterday morn?
ing, Mr. Burnham found his gun In one cor?
ner of the room and his empty purse lying on
the floor, and nothing has since been heard of
the thieves. Police !
TRAPPISO A THIEF.-Yesterday evening
Robert Loyd, a worthy representative of the
light-lingered fraternity, entered the drug
store of Messrs. Graman A Sch wake, at the
corner of King and Mary streets, and, seizing
upon a favorable moment, attempted- to rifle
the UH. This Important little adjuuct, how?
ever, had been furnished with a patentHrap,
and the itching Angers ot Robert had hardly
closed upon the duveted greenbacks when his
hand was grabbed and held as If in a vice.
The thief struggled, kicked and swore, Bcat
terlDg the money about, but be was held se?
curely until the proprietor came up and found
Robert In limbo "fla?raute delicto./' A po?
liceman was called, the trap undone, and
Robert, nursing bis bruised Hogers, took his
way In charge of Clubs and Stars to-the upper
Guardhouse. _
FOLLOWING A STREET CAR.-Yesterday
morolug a colored man Heated himself In one
ot the yellow street care on the trip up-town,
and was passing the City Hall, when another
darkey looked in the car, and Immediately
after started In pursuit of lt. He followed
closely, gesticulating fiercely, and evidently
laboring under intense excitement. The car
stopped, and the darkey swearing that the
colored man inside bad sold him a stolen hog,
threatened to arrest the man In the cars. He
was told to get a policeman lo do this, and the
car proceeded, pursued In the hot sun from
the City Hall up to the.corner of Wentworth
street by the excited darkey. The pursuer
here got on the car by invitation and rode
along, vowing vengeance against the quaking
pork-vender within. At the upper Guard?
house the car stopped, and a policeman hav?
ing been called lo, the colored man was ar?
rested on the charge ot stealing a pig. The
question Is to be settled to-day. The swin?
dled darkey was not sunni ruck.
