THE DELINQUENT TAX SALES. Bales of County Property to Brgin next Tuesday. The sale of the city property advertised to be sold lor non-pay meat of taxes under the act of the last Legislature, which became a law March 12, 1872, ls now nearly completed, and the sate of the property of delinquent taxpay? ers In Charleston County, outside of the city, ls expected to commence next Tuesday. Th* preliminary publication of the names and pro? perty of 8HCh delinquents has already b>en commenced in THE NEWS, and they make a formidable list of real estate to ba brought j nnder the auctio2?ar's hammer. The list ls, however, still open for revision and for the correction of any mistakes that may have been made, and an opportunity ls still afforded for the owners to prevent the sacrifice ol their property by set? tling their taxes with the additional costs that have accrued. There is no doubt that the sales will be made and they will be positive, the new law npon the subject allowing the county offlcere no option in the matter, and requiring them to give a warranty deed to each purchaser, and, although the sales of city property thus lar have hardly been attended at all, and bave provoked littlo or no specula? tive competition, there can be little ?doubt that with the present organization ot every branch of the State government the sales thus made will be held to be binding and the deeds perfectly valid In the eyes of the law. The following sales of city property were made yesterday, all the pieces being knocked down to the State for the amount of taxes due: Vacant lot, No. 34 America street, lor $36 54. Vacant lot, No. 2 Hasel street, belonging to Charles Whiling, for $42. House and lot, No. 16 King street, belong? ing to Mrs. M. A. Whiling, for $46 73. The sale will be continued to-day through the rest ot the Ws. STEAM FREIGHT TO NEW YOEE ON ROSIN. Tue lines of steamships from this port to New York have from this date until further notice fixed the freight on rosin at sixty cents per barrel. Shippers will please notice the change. THE FUNERAL OF MB. JOHN COLCOCE took place yesterday afternoon at St. Michael's Church, the rector, Rev. R. S. Trapler officia? ting. The relatives and numerous friends of the deceased, inclnding most of our promi? nent merchants and business men, were pres? ent. Two aoplicants for lodgings were examined and discharged. TIDINGS FROM TEXAS.-A correspondent writing from Paris, Lamar County, Texas, states that the weather bas been most propi jObus. The wheat is laid by and the corn too far advanced to rear any damage, while the farmers are all smiling at the prospect. Tom Scott the great railroad king, has gobbled up the Memphis and El Paso Railroad, with its right of way, lor $85,000. His road, the Cen? trai Pacific, will be pushed through rapidly, and, as Paris ls a central point, the inhabi? tants ol that place are speculating largely on Its taking a high rank among our Inland towns. REDUCTION OF THE BAIL.-The case of Lieu? tenant Heidt, who was arrested on the charge of maltreating a prisoner in the detective office, and committed by Trial Justice A. M. Mackey upon his not being able to find sure? ties on his bond to the amount of five thou? sand dollars, late Moaday evening, was heard again yesterday. A habeas corpus had been sued ont by the prisoner's counsel, and was appointed to be heard before Judge Graham at five o'clock. A short time before this, however, the prisoner was brought before Trial Juatlce A. M. Mackey again, and on motion ot Solicitor Whipper the prisoner was discharged upon giving bond In the sum of one hundred dollars to appear for examina? tion. WILLARD MEETING IN WABD S_A large and enthusiastic meeting of the citizens of Ward 8. farer jpJs to the nomination of Justice A. J. Willard for Governor and W. B. Nash for Lleutenant-Govemor, was held on Mon? day night at Lewis's Hall, Line street. The meeting was called to order, and the follow? iog officers were proposed and elected by ac? clamation: R. Richardson, president; D. B Smith, rice-president; B. Lee, secretary; P. Meson, treasurer; J. Lewis, hallkeeper. Several speakers occupied the attention of the assembly acceptably, and after ratifying the nomination of the above named candidates, the chair declared the meeting open for the transaction of any other business which might be brouzht before it. Mr. Jacob Royal then took the floor, and arter some remarks, which were received with appians*. nominated Cap? tain Slgwald for county sheriff and Mr. Louis Dunnemann for county commissioner. These nominations were received with cheers, and upoa being put before the meeting were unanimously accepted, and all present pledged themselves to the support of good and true men for State and county officers. Several speakers addressed the meeting, supporting the nomi nat lon?, and at a late hour the meeting adjourned, ta meet again at the same place next Monday night at half-past eight o'clock. All the persons present were Republicans. ESCAPE FROM THE JAIL. Six Color?! Prisoners Tnke Frenen Leave-How the Thing Worked. About ono o'clock yesterday morning pix colored prisoners, John Washington, Joe Glover, Hector Gardner, Toby Brown, John Lee and Alfred H.idson, confined in the Charleston Jail, some under sentence and others for trial, succeeded in making their es? cape. At ten o'clock on Monday night the jailor made the usual grand round, and lound ail the cells properly secured and the prison? ers within. Between one and two o'clock next morning ajyiolent ringing at the Jail en? trance was heard, and the visitor proved to be a lady living in the Marine Hospital, at the back of the jail yard, who reported that she had Just seen a lot of men escaping over the Jail yard wall Into the hospital yard. A search followed, and the six prisoners were found wanting. The doors of the cells In which the prisoners were confined were all found un? locked, and the postern gate in the tower was found open. The prisoners had been confined In various parts of the jail, mostly In the tower, and their plan ol escape must have been well digested and in preparation for some lime past. Hec? tor had been lodged in the tower, and Joe Glover left a cen iu which two other prisoners were confined, who were both asleep, and knew nothing of the matter. John Lee, one of the fugitives, under sen? tence lor grand larceny, had been acting as turnkey for some time past, and had charge of the keys during the day, but always return? ed them to the Jailor at five o'clock in the eve? ning, when the prisoners were locked up. It Is supposed that he took an impression of the skeleton key on the bunch, and having had a similar key made outside,.was thus enabled to open the doors ot the cells in which the members ol the ring to which he belonged were confined. This ls clearly proved by the fact that the lock on the en- j trance gate to the tower from the yard could not be opened by tbe skeleton key, and the fugitives had to smash lt to get out. They then got a long bench and a trough, which they placed upright lu the southeast corner of the Jail yard wall. This was not yet high enough, so the yard rake was hung upon the top, and by the aid of the handle the six In turn climb- j ed safely up. A long board formed a silde on the other side from the top ol th? w?H to the ground, down which tho men were eliding when discovered by the lady. They landed In tb? hospital yard, and made a rapid exit thence to the street. Five of the fugitives were reported to have I been seeu yesterday evening at the corner of Bull and Rutledge streets, and the assistant jailor with a strong posse went In pursuit of them. THE RADICAL MASS MEETING.-Mr. R. S. Tbarln addressed an assemblage of two or j three hundred persons last evening from the balcony of the City Hall. His Bpeech was a curious farrago of history, politics and reli? gion, purporting to describe the past and prespnt condition of Sonth Carolina, and to prescribe for. Ita future salvation. He distri? buted his condemnations rather impartially among all parties, advocated as the panacea j for all the evils of the body politic, the election of no man who had ever held office in the State, and concluded by nominating Dr. R. B. Hewitt for Governor. There was very little enthusiasm In the meeting, and none at all at the mention of the nominee. CBUMBS.-There were no real estate sales yesterday. Mr. Julian A. Selby, editor and proprietor of | the Columbia Phoenix, was In town yester? day. Messrs. E. E. Sell and B, D. Townsend, of | South Carolina, were registered at the Grand Central Hotel, Chicago, on the 18th Instant, A valuable dog, stolen from George's Sta? tion, is at the detective office, and the officers are upon the track of the thief. The Grant and Wilson ratification meeting, as advertised, will take place this evening at Military Hall. The procession will assemble on Meeting street, between Calhoun ->d John. John James, a Penitentiary bird of some note, has left his country for his country's good on board of the bark Alice C., bound for j Liverpool. Charleston, at least, can well spare him.
