A Desperate Thief Slashes a Detectlve

oles having disappeared from the store during
the week, the matter was referred to the de
tecilves. Suspicion lell upon Edward Ray,
.who, having been caught stealing from John?
son's hat store, som? time ago, was captured
after a desperate resistance and sent to the
House of Correction lor thirty days, and about
ten o'clock yesterday morning Officer Van
derllppe brought the meek-looking Ray to Mr.
Brookbank. Upon being queBiloned the pris?
oner admitted that he was concerned In the
theft o? the cage, but said he had not done lt
himself, and waa ready to point out to the offi?
cer the boy who had done it. The officer then
set out with Ray up Meeting street, to look
lor the real thief. The pair had not got far
before Ray halted, and swearing he wonld go
no further, he, quick a? thought, drew a razor,
shook it open and made a desperate slash at
the officer. The sharp blade struck the outer
part of ihe officer's thigh, and was drawn
transversely upward, leaving a deep and ghast?
ly out. lu spite of this Che detective caught
hold of Bay, who quickly caught IID a broken
soda water bottle and struck the detective
several times on the arm and hand with the
lagged glass, mangling his hand and flogers
terribly. Ray then shook off the officer and fled
up Meeting street, pursued by Mr. Brookbank.
He was overtaken in a side street, into which
he turned, and a desperate fight ensued be?
tween bim and Policeman Huller, who tried to
arrest him. The policeman's coat was torn to
pieces and Bay's clothing had parted company
with bis sable figure, when be at last was
overpowered, placed upon a cart and conveyed
to the Guardhouse. Detective Vanderllppe
went to Dr. Keller's drug store, where bl:
hand waa dressed and the cut upon his thigh
bound up. He la now at home and doing weil.
Ray is a confirmed and desperate thief. He
never surrenders without a struggle, and ls
one of those dangerous characters who have
hitherto confined his operations to offences
Within the jurisdiction of the Mayor and trial
justices*. Hence his absence from the Peni'
tentlary.

THE WEATHER YESTERDAY was Intensely
warm, with the thermometer standing up
among the nineties, and discouraging every?

evening there waa a refreshing "breeze, and at
about five o'clock there was a copious shower
ol rain, which effectually laid the duse and
cooled the atmosphere.
THE MOUNT PLEASANT CUTTING AFFRAY.
Mr. Marion Boss, the young man who was cut
In the neck In an affray on Mount Pleasant,
on Friday night, bas Improved considerably,
and la now In a fair way o? recovering. His
antagonist was a young man named S. Y. i
Gregory, and not Mr. Furman Gregory as at j

UNSTSCAL ARREST.-La^t evening Lieuten- '
ant Heidt, of the Detective force, was arres ed
on a warrant from Trial Justice A. M. Mackey,
on the charge of maltreating ? prisoner. The
arrest waa made about dusk, and ball to the
amount,of five thousand dollars demanded,
and Lieutenant Heidt being unable to furnish
this amount at the lime, he was committed
tor examination. Tue case will be heard to?
day.

filled the position of bookkeeper since the
bank resumed operations In 1869, and his uni?

ties of bis office during this period have made
his promotion a source of general satisfaction
to his friends and all who have had any busi?
ness relations with the bank.
A BuonEN STROKE-Last evening abont
sunset, as a white man, named M. Buckley,
waa walking along tho sidewalk in 8ocieiy
street, near Meeting, he waB seen to stagger
forward suddenly and fall heavily to the
ground. Several persons rushed up and tried
to revive bim, without success, and a large
crowd speedily gathered around the body, it
was afterwards placed upon a wagon and Bent
to the hospital, where lt was recognized as
that of a patient above named, wbo had been
discharged from the hospital that morning.
Upon examination, the sudden eu?pen<>ion of
the vital fuoctlonB waa attributed to the
effects of alcohol upon the brain, and the
patient was pronounced dead-drunk.
DEATH OF MR. JOHN COLCOCK.
Our business community has again experi?
enced a painful and heavy lo;8 In the death
of this estimable gentleman and merchant,
which took place, alter a short illness, about
half-past nine o'clock last evening, at his res?
idence In Tradd street. Mr. Colcock was
born In Beaufort District, and, with many
other sterling men of a generation now rapid?
ly passing away, was educated at the school
of Dr. Waddell, so famous lu by-gone days.
For several years he was engaged In planting,
but when quite a young man he came to the
clty,and for the past, forty years has been doing
business here as a factor in several firms. For
many years previous to the war he was a mem?
ber ol the prominent firm of Legare, Colcock
& Co., but since the war had been associated
in business with his son, under tne firm name
of John Colcoci & Co., until his death. Mr.
Colcock was never a public man, and was one
who always attended strictly to b's own busi?
ness. Asa merchant his high integrity and
conscientious dealings were know n and appre?
ciated in business circles, and as a gentleman
his kindness, courtesy and generosity impress?
ed all who came In contact with him. His
death, at the advanced age of seventy-three
years, will be felt by a large circle of Mends.
The luneral services will be held at six o'clock
this evening, at St. Michael's Church.

J. B. Kelly and Mary Ann Morris, arrested

having duly clothed themselves In their aprons
and other Masonic insignia marched to the
Military Hall. Shekinah Lodge was here pre?
sented with a handsome silk banner, blue on
one side and white on the other, and edged
with a heavy gold fringe. On one side ls in?
