A BUDGET FROM BARNWELL. [FROM Otm TRAVELLING CORRESPONDENT.] B.uiNWt'.L, June 21. Barnwell is situated ten miles south of j Blackville, Its nearest railroad depot. Of late, considerable effort bat been made to Induce the South Carolina Railroad to build a branch connecting the two p'aces. This branch road was chartered previous to the war, and nearly all the grading done; the original stockhold-1 ere have offered to give it, in its present state, to the South Carolina Railroad Company, pro? vided this company agrees to complete lt atan early day. The town stands at the hod waters of Saltkahatchie River, on a low sandy ridge, overtopped on three sides by tolerably high bills. It ls a small place, having been In great measure destroyed by Sherman, and lt J has never been rebuilt. The removal of the courthouse to Blackville has had a damaging effect on business. The situation is not a good one for commercial purposes, but as long as the town remained the county seat it was ne? cessarily the business centre. With the re? moval of the courthouse most of Its concomi? tant trade bas flowed Into other channels. Much jealousy Is manifested against Blackville in consequence of this loss. The orinclpal merchants are A. P. Manville, S. N. Bellinger, A. S. Hull, Ingram & Schuck, John J. Bronson and J. C. Buckingham. A peculiar feature ls a large sun-dial, standing in the centre of what was once the courthouse rquare. It ls rather a surprising circumstance to find a village sun-dial in place of the village clock, in these days of telegraphs, railroads and steamboats. This dial was erected some twenty years ago, by a former resident, as a gift to the town. While the thermometer is up near fever heat elsewhere, the Barn wei i lansYeompose themselves beneath their vines anenflg trees, and enjoy the most refreshing breezes, both day and night. This ls probably due, in a great measure, to the location of the town in a hollow, at the head of a river corn log directly np from the ocean. Bain ls very much needed lu most sections 1 of the country: gardens nnd cnn and pota? toes are being literally parc^. Cotton has not yet commenced to show 111 effects, but lt will not escape Injury If the dry spell con tinnes much longer. About the 15th of May n small portion ot the country was visited by a very severe hail storm. It utterly destroy-1 < ed the crops lo every field that it passed over. I , I saw several fields wherein the replanting, necessitated by this storm, had Just come up. Fortunately the greatest area of the hail was |1 only about a mlle wide and a few long. Cot? ton in some parts ls poor, but in all fertile districts very fine. Blossoms are abundant Corn ls not generally as far advanced as it*' iihould be. The fruit crop ls a failure. I have teen but one or two orchards that are even tolerably well filled with irult. In many I < cases, too, the fruit is defective. 11 I have not been able to learn de?nltely what position the negroes have taken with re? gard to the coming Presidential election; the whites are a unit for Greeley. In tact, the negroes appear to be losing so nie of their for? mer interest in politics. A Radical mass meeting is said to have been called for last Saturday, to take place at the plantation of a Dr. Bice, near Bamber?. As no negroes went, lt was a failure. Cunee finds the thing don't 11 pay so well after all. There Is a belt of country around the Town of Barnwell, from ten to Alteen miles broad, o? a white sandy soil, so poor that nothing but the pine and the scrub oak will grow upon it. Here we find the native ''squatter" in all the glory of a primeval state. This interesting In? dividual sets himself down, not like the patri? archs of old, by the side of purling streams, and in the midst of green pastures, but upon tte top of anybody's white sand hill where nothing can grow, and where in summer the sun's rays are almost sufficiently concentrated I ] to cook an egg. Ja this hill he oleare a small t space, builds a lapslded log hut, plants a few I ? seed of cotton and corn, and, calmly watches1 the struggling plants slowly perish in the broiling neat. If a stranger passes be thrusts his Jaundiced face and matted head through the door or window, and stares in open mouthed astonishment. Coming to a house that presented a little better appearance than the others, I ventured to interview the occu? pant. He bad evidently passed fifty years. Growing eloquent upon the merits of my Jour? nal, I paused to take breath. The man's lace assumed something very like a foolish grin. I saw that he was about to speak, and sought my note-Dook, but let it go quickly enough, when he said: "To tell you de trute, I alni got larnio nuff fur read um." I inwardly re? solved never again to Interview a "squatter." SPRITE. GOSSIP FROM GREENVILLE. The Crops Need Rain-Cotton In Peril The Grain Crops-The Forman Uni? versity Commencement. [FROM ODB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GREENVILLE, June 21 We need rain very much, the few light Bhowere did good, but now the gardens and fields are becoming parched up. Our colton crop ls one-third more in area than ever be? fore, and the fertilizers are double those used b??ore, and a very large crop ls expected. It is now in a very critical state. It can stand drought np to a certain point better than corn, owing to its tap-root, but should it begin to give way, it is hard to recover it, and a seri? ous failure this season ol the cotton crop, with the heavy debt due for fertilizers and the op presslve taxation, would crush the farmers now greatly embarrassed beyond hope. The wheat crop is good, has been harvested, new flour ls In the market and relieves the scar? city very much. We have here lived on Northern and Western flour at $12, and even $14 per barrel, and not only in this city, but the country generally. Oue thing ls certain, we are not a thrifty people. On Tuesday last Major Steadman, of Union County, and distinguished in the Confederate anny, and who now carries a Yankee ball in his body, received in some battle, delivered a splendid address belore the literary societies of Forman University, and last night Rev. Dr. Meynardle, at the Female Baptist College, de? livered an address ot thrilling eloquence tea very large and select audience. Dr. M. draws large audiences to his church, who are delight? ed with his eloquence and able discourses, and ls quite a "lion" in these parts. Political opinions here much disorganized.
