The average of acquittals is only twenty per

- Trouble ls already coming to the surface
lathe Republican party in Pennsylvania, over
their obnoxious State ticket. It appears that
several Federal office-holders in the interior
of the State have declared their opposition to
the Harrisburg ring nominations, which has
greatly incensed Senator Cameron, who made
that ticket, and who now reports these officials
aa hostile to the administration and aa'is for
their removal. The President, of coursa, hesi?
tates to pursue sud* a warfare aa tba'., for it
wonjii l&evU&blj bring crown upon him ali the
Republican opponents ol Hartraoft and com?
pany, marshalled by Forney, and would ren?
der defeat, even Irom an administration stand?
point, absolutely certain in October. Republi?
can advices irom various quarters of the
State already concede a defeat in October by
the triumphant election of Mr. Buckalow as
Governor. If Cameron persists In the ostra?
cism of Federal office-holders, the ordinary
work of the campaign will not be even neces?
sary to bring that result about.
-As lt now appears the full limit of ruses, ,
strategies, demurrers and dodges ot all sorts I
has been exhausted, and the trial of. Stokes is
fairly on lor whatever fortune awaits him,
though the counsel show a willingness to put
on the break wherever there is a chance, and
undoubtedly the public will be many times out
of patience before the fate of Jim Fisk's mur?
derer is actually decided. The courtroom,
as the prisoner was brought In, reminded the
spectators of McFarland's trial lu the Interest
manifested, and on account or the same ac?
tors lb much of the proceedings. Stokes
deems to have gained In point ot dignity and
zeal by an exchange ot counsel, though it is
doubtful If his present defenders are up to all
the feints and blinds and bluster that John
Graham was master of. The Tribune Bays
that the reports of Stokes's care-worn look
tave been exaggerated, though there has
come a sprinkling ot gray among his Jetty
locks,, and he has lost hrs vivacity; though he
is only a sober not a despondent man. His
father, with white hair and shaggy beard and
the same bright eye that adds to the beauty of
his sen, anxiously watched every movement
of the opening, and stayed through the entire
day, Other members of the Stokes family
were in attendance.
-The whole world will be interested In
knowing the use which Germany makes of the
war indemnity she bas received from France.
The grand totals of the moneys which France
ls to pay to her conqueror foot up somewhat in
excess of 1,441,487,96t thalers. Of this sum,
however, France receives back. 86,666,6GG
thalers for the railways of Alsace-Lorraine.
The German government, very wisely, for its
own purposes, has used this vast su n of money
first in aiding and restoring the provinces re?
cently annexed, giving 36,700.000 to persons
and corporations whose property was destroy?
ed, and spending 11,440,000 lhalers In replen?
ishing the rolling stock on the railway lines,
for. strategical purposes. -Large sums have
been paid to the families of the landwehr,
4,000,000 thalers have been distributed among
the successful generals, and ten limes that
sum has been set apart as a reserve fund for
the next war. These sums having been ex?
pended in repairing losses by the late conflict,
and other huge appropriations having been
made for the building of fortresses and pre?
paring ior future exigencies, setnething is left
to be divided among the several States. Even
In this distribution warlike considerations are
kept ln*vlew, and three-fourths of the whole
amount ls to be divided in proportion to the
onmoer of men furnished by each State.
-A complete inventory of General Grant's
?table has been taken jy the correspondent of
the New York World with the result that
therein were contained seven horses; two car?
riage horses, three trotters and two ordinaries,
and one barouche, one dog-cart, one trotting
wagon, and one peaton, wltb harness, Bad?
dies, clothing, 4c, making a total expense of
about ten thousand dollars. The story that
the President brought with him eleven horses
seems thereby to be a malicious slander. The
uget-up" ol the President, when he takes the
air In his dog-cart, ls the most Imposing spec?
tacle ou the beach. Children leave their play
and nursemaids pause in their rambles to ad?
mire. The horses are large, well-matched
bays, adorned in massive harness, gold-trim?
med, and strictly in keeping with the remain?
ing magnificence. The driver, too, ls an im?
portant adjunct to the general effect, as he is
tall and pure sable, clad in white corduroy
and white flannel, trimmed with silver, white
top boots and glossy black hat. A shorter
companion, dressed in the same manner and
with the same imperturbable countenance,
sits by his side, not that he is of any particular
use, but he fills up an unaesthetic blank, and
so, of course, acts as an ornament. The car
riage.ls not so imposing, being of black body
with aristocratic yellow running part, and ls
less popular with the President than the trot?
ting wagon.
Tile Blue Ridge Million.
At the meeting of the City Council
to-night the City Attorney should be
ready to report what action is required to
be taken for the protection of the million
dollars invested by Charleston in the Bine
Ridge. Railroad. A private stockholder,
' whatever his motive, has already taken pro- ?
ceedinga to compel the officers of the road to
show what has been done with its income, j
and with the bonds and bond scrip author?
ized to be issued for its relief. This private
stockholder may possibly disappear from the
scene; but he shows tbe City Council the
way to go to work.
Look at the facts 1 A Ring of speculators
buy np $1,300,000 of stock in the Blue Ridge
Railroad for $13,000. This ia the stock
which was the property of tbe State. The
Ring at once reorganize the Board and elect
a majority of their own creatures. It is true
that a number of directors are allowecfto the
City of Charleston ; bnt no meeting of the
Board is called, although tbo gravest mea?
sures are in course of execntion. A bill buys
its ways through the Legislature aulhort-'--.
the issue of State Revena? ]^*arScrip to the
amount of SU-fm'*^ ?or the Pap?se o?
liQuidsr^? t,ie (jeDts ?*tDe Company, which
jeots do not, it is believed, exceed $650,000.
This Revenue Bond Scrip is printed and put
upon the market; yet no meeting of the
Board of Directors is called, and no stale
merit is made, showing the financial condi?
tion of the road.
What can the City Council do? The stock
of the Blue Ridge Railroad is, in round num?
bers, $2,500,000, of which tho Ring hold
$1,300,000, and the City of Charleston holds
$1,000,000. It is the duty or the City Coun?
cil at least to make an attempt to save this
million dollars, or a part of it. It is their
duty to see that tbe relief extended to the
Company is honestly applied. It is their
duty to do what tbey can to prevent the
road from being stripped bare and then sold
out, perhaps to the Southern Security Com?
pany, to satisfy some fictitious creditor.
The people of the city look to the City
Council to exhaust every means of protec?
tion and redress. A million dollars are
sorely, worth, an expendiLo.ro which was
cheerfully agreed to when the question waa,
How best to hamper the operations of the
I Enterprise Railroad ?
To night, then, the good work should
! begin, whether the City Attorney is, or is
not, ready to moke-his report. It is easier
of course to do nothing than to do some?
thing. But tbe easiest course is not always
the safest course for municipal bodies to
pursue.
The Prospect.
It is a Axed fact that tbe Baltimore Con?
vention will not put forward a third Presi?
dential ticket. Hitherto, there has been a
confident expectation that this would be the
case, but now it may be looked upon as set?
tled. Tho number of votes in tbe Baltimore
Convention, equal to twice tbe number ID
the electoral college, will be 732. Or the
States already heard from we count as in
favor of the* endorsement of Greeley, or os
against a nomination, the following votes :
Tennessee, 24; New York, 70; West Vir?
ginia, 10; Pennsylvania, 5?: Louisiana, 16;
Iowa, 22; Kansas, 10; Indiana, 30; Ver?
mont, 10; North Carolina, 20; South Caro?
lina, 14; Missouri, 30; Wisconsin, 20;
Florida, 8; Maine, 14; Maryland, IC; Ala?
bama, 20; Minnesota, 10; Connecticut, 12;
California, 12; Nebraska, 4; and Texas. 16.
Total 446. This week, (even omitting Geor?
gia,) we may count on Ohio, 44; Missis?
sippi, 16; and Virginia, 221; making a
grand total of 528, which is far more than
two-thirds of the whole vote. Against this
magnificent showing wo have the puny
State of Delaware sending six delegates to
Baltimore instructed to vote for a straight
Democratic ticket. This number may be
reinforced by New Jersey's eighteen, and
Oregon's six, altogether summing up thirty
[delegates out of the seven hundred and odd.
The prospect, therefore, Is that the majority
opposed to a Democratic nomination and in
favor of the endorsement of Greeley and
Browo, will be overwhelming.
Blind Drank.
"Grant was so blind drunk that be couldn't
Ile down decently at the battle of Pittsburgh
Landing."-John A. Logan.
We dislike this. It is personal More?
over, the person alluded to happens to be
the President of the United States. He is in
a position which forbids bis resenting tbe
insult-an unfortunate thing for him, poor,
brave man 1 Were Logan within easy reach
of the .pen that pens this line, it would be
jobbed in him.pp to the hilt, and it is on this
account that he keeps clear of Charleston.
But the accusation ia false on the very
face of it. In the first place, men who get
blind drunk are not of Grant's stamp. They
are not cold, hard, wooden-headed, merce?
nary and tyrannical. Not that we believe
our President to be cold, mercenary, ?fcc.,
bat that is tho character universally given
him by his enemies. Such men do not get
blind drunk. Their heads are too hard and
their hearts too cold. Steady old soakers
may be selfish and stingy, but the man who
gets blind drunk occasionally is almost
always a generous, open-handed fellow, fond
of cigars and fast horses. And it is a re?
markable fact that dogs afe very fond of
such meo. Let General Logan reconcile
this discrepancy if he can.
He was "so blind dnunk that he couldn't
"lie down decently" says the President's
calumniator. This statement is as foolish
as it is nnnecessary. Blind drunkenness is
itself a condition of shocking indecency, in
which il is impossible for a man to say or do
anything decently. If Grant were blind
drunk on tho occasion alluded to, it was ask?
ing too much of him to lie down decently.
Indeed, there was no good reason why he
should lie down decently or indecently at
that particular time. On the contrary, he
bad the strongest motive not only Tor stand?
ing up, but for running away rapidly and
not very decently. That he did run away is
an historical fact, and of course he could
not, while in the act of running, lie down
decently. So far from blaming him-admit?
ting that he was drunk-our only and lasting
regret is that Buell was not ns blind drunk
as he was. General Logan's accusation is
illogical; or, if logical, it is gratifying to
one-half of the nation.
Of one thing General Logan and others
may rest assured-that is, whatever may
have been General Grant's condition at
Pittsburgh Landing, he was not blind drunk
when Buell's account of the battle at that
Landing waa stolen from the archives of the
War Office, lie had reformed-was in the
fall possession of his faculties of mind and
body-was dead sober indeed,-and we defy
Logan and the whole world to deny or dis?
prove the fact.

RHEUMATISM AND NEURALGIA.
In all arthritic complaints, as rheumatism, goat,
neuralgia, Ac, this practice ls almost perfect.
The most intense pains are almost instant ly re?
lieved, enormous swellings are reduced, Umba
which have been contracted and stiff for years are
relaxed. Oases of twenty, thirty and forty years'
standing have been cured by me after aU other
means have failed
A great accomplishment ls my triumph over
pain by which I can often, In a few moments,
soothe and carry off the most excruciating suf?
ferings, ir this system did nothing more than
to relieve pain, lt would stand superior to any
other system extant.

and laya the foundation for consumption.
The most skillful physicians rall to care lt.

I am dally treating all affections of the ear with

enred by me in a few weeks at a moderate ex?

MERCURIAL DISEASES.
Mercury, Injudiciously used, baa filled tira earth
with wrecks or humanity. Thousands suffer (rom
Its effects who have been unconsciously dragged
by their physician. It ls vain to attempt the cure
or the majority of diseases while lt remains lu the
body. Although I have heard or several so-called
antidotes for mercury In the human body, 1 have
never yet seen a physician who could eliminate
lt from the system.
1 can satisfy any patient or physlcan that I can

treated by certain charlatans styling themselves

After being pronounced incurable, I will take
any one of these cases In hand and make a per?
