A BURLESQUE OF MRS. BROWNING.
In ""Fly-Leaves," a volume of verse by C. S.
Calverley, soon to be published in the "Leis?
ure Hour Series" of Holt <k Williams, there
will be lound the following ballad, which ls
l?se majest? to the fame o? Mrs. Browning.
The best English critics tell us thal no such
amusing parodies have appeared sinco the
"Rejected Addresses:"
Ballad.
The auld wire sat at her ivied door.
{Butter and eggs and a pound of cheese)
A thing she had frequently done before;
An? her spectacles lay on her aproned Knees.
The piper he piped on the hill-top high,
(Butter and eggs and a pound of cheese)
Till the cow said "I die." and ihe goose asked
"Why?"
And the dog said nothing, but searched for
fleas.
The larmer he strode through the square farm
yard;
[Butter and eggs and a pound of cheese)
His last brew cr ale was a trifle hard
The connection or which with the plot one sees.
The farmer's dane titer hath frank blue eyes;
(Butter aid eggs and a pound of cheese)
She hears the rooks caw in the windy skies.
As she sits at her lattice and shelis her peas.
The farmer's daughter hath ripe red lips:
(putter and eggs and a pound ofchetse)
. ir yon try to approach her, away the skips
Over tables and chairs with apparent ease.
The farmer's ii auch ter hath soft brown hair;
(Butter and eggs and a pound of cheese)
And I met with a ballad, 1 can't say where.
Which wholly consisted of lines like these.
PART II.
She sat, with her hands 'neath her dimnled
cheeks,
(?Stter and eggs and a pound of cheese)
Ano/spake not a word. While a lady speaks
There ls hope, but sho didn't even snsjle.
She sat, with her hands 'neath her crimson
cheeki.
(Rutter and eggs and a pound of tit?ese)
She gave np mending her rather's breeks,
And let the cat roll In her best chemise.
She sat, with her hands 'neath her burning
cheeks, *
(ButUr and eggs and a pound of cheese)
And gazed at the plpt-r lor thirteen weeks,
Then she followed him out o'er the misty leas.
Her Bheep followed ber, as their tails did them,
(Rutter ana eggs and a pound of cheese)
And this song ls considered a perfect gem,
And as to the meaning, lt's wtiat you please.
THINGS IN SPARTANBURG.
Centennial Anniversary of Nazareth
Church-An Interesting Occasion-Ad?
dress by the V v. Dr. Palmer-Crops,
?c.
[FSOX (ICR OWN COBRKSFONDKNT.]
SPARTANBURO, S. C., June 1
Nazareth Church, (Presbyterian,) situated
about eight miles west of Spartanburg Court
house, celebrated to-day Ita centennial anni
versar;.'. Its pastor, who has supplied them
for near ten rears last past, the Rev. R. H.
Reid, of Reldvllle, in this county, commenced
the exercises by reading a brief but most in
terestlog article on the commencement, rise
and progress of the congregation to>he'pres?
ent period, and showing that a regular con?
gregation of the Presbyterian faith bad Wor?
shipped at the same place and about the same
spot for one hundred years. The present
house of worship ls a large, most comfortable,
and well arranged brick building, and has
been erected about forty yer-rn, but later re
flttedjjadorned and made yet more comforta?
ble, and with seats capable of seating about
six hundred persons.
After the lecture, of the pastor, and j usual
divine services, the congregation gathered In
and outside of. the church, crowding every
window and door. I suppose lull twelve hun?
dred In number were held fast in solemn si?
lence for aa hour and a half listening to a dis?
course, delivered without any special sole cted
text; and without notes, by the Rev. Dr. B. H.
Palmer, ot New Orleans, and so well known in
our Slate that the mere mention ot the name
and of the occasion I deem sufficient without
further comment on bis remarks, or an
attempt to reproduce any of hts sublime
language.
In this section, the most wealthy In our
county, with the most fertile farms and plan?
tations, I learn the crops are looking well,
and are In Uno growlog condition, but suffer?
ing some from the long drought they have
had; but happily, just as the able divine above
mentioned was finishing up his eloquent dis?
course, Heaven blessed us with a most wel?
come and copious shower, which extended it?
self for miles around. MAP.SU.
THE CHARGES AGAINST TREASURER
PARKER.
Awkward Questions by General Whip?
per.
[From the Beaufort Times, Rep ]
Tbe circular of Treasurer Parker in refer?
ence to the appropriation for public schools
exonerates him lrom blame in not paying out
said appropriation. We are glad to see that
he bas at last put the responsibility where lt
properly belongs, and hope he will continue
to "rise to explain" other matters equally in?
teresting to the people. He ls charged with
paying money out of the treasury to defeat Im?
peachment, and to keep ont of the penitentiary
the thieves In high positions who have
Slandered the State and ruined her credit.
Te ask him to say upon whose order this
money was paid, to whom, and ia what
amounts. We know that Mr. Parker can fas?
ten this corrupt expenditure where it belong?,
therefore we ask him to do lt, as fully and as
clear as he does this school appropriation. Ia
addition be can tell how much money was
ptld oat to pass such Infamous measures as
the validating bill, Intended only to shield and
protect dishonest officials from the penally of
the law. Let him state the facts boldly and
fearlessly, and then the people will Bee why
our schools are closed, our Judges unpaid, our
benevolent Institutions on the charity ot In
dlvlduals, and why the reply of "no money" is
given to the crediton that dally besiege the
treasury. _ _ _
TBEASURER PARKER IN COURT.
[From the Columbia Carolinian.]
Before Judge Willard on Monday the purtles
to the Injunction appeared, tbe question at Is?
sue being a motion by counsel of Parker to
vacate an order heretofore granted appointing
a referee to take testimony In the case. Upon
the opening of the case on Monday, he ap?
peared by counsel and signified his willing
ness to submit a d?position, and Judge Willard
therefore postponed further hearing to enable
bim to do so. As we are Informed he qualified
his statement in co?rt,and insisted that the affi?
davit or deposition to be sworn by bim should
be prepared by the counsel for the petitioners
against him, which for obvious reasons they
refused to do, so tbat the case must again be
carried before his Honer for the enforcement
of the)- order requiring Parker to submit to an
examination. Surely there should be suffi?
cient authority resident lu the court to com?
pel parties properly before lt to obey its man
dates, when' such obedience ls necessary to
the progress of the case.
JOTTINGS ABOUT THE STATE.
-Governor Scott has appointed S. JD. Rus?
sell a trial justice for St. Stephen's Parish,
Charleston County, vice A. J. Harvey, de?
ceased.
-The heavy storm of rain on Monday caused
considerable damage to the rooms, plastering
and carpets on the east side ot the Statehouse.
The boards upon the roof had warped in such
a manner that ihe rain poured In in torrents.
The waler In some of the rooms was reported
to have been aa Inch deep. The plastering is
also started from its fastenings, making it
(langerons to sit beneath lt.
-On Saturday evening last, the question of
granting an Injunction restraining the treasur?
er from reselling lands where revenue bond
scrip had been tendered was argued in Beau?
fort. Mr. C. F. Oolcock appeared lor the
treasurer, and Mr. W. J. Whipper for Messrs.
Wright and Holmes, the plaintiffs. Judge C.
B. Farmer has reserved bis decision.
-We are indebted to the committee for an
Invitation to the annual celebration ot Calhoun
Literary Society, of Woflbrd College, In Spar
tanburg, on Monday evening, ihe 24th ihsmnt.
The subject for debate ls: "Would the encour?
agement of loreign immigration prove more
beneficial than Injurious to "this nailon ?" The
affirmative side of the question will be repre?
sented by James W. Rosborough. of Mississip?
pi- William A. Brown, ot South Carolina; and
the negative by Charles P. Wofford, of South
Careena; James H. Forney, ot North Carolina.
The valedictory address will be delivered by
William A. Rogers, of South Carolina.
A NEW CURE FOR BLINDNESS.
About, a vear ago, Professor Nagel, ol Tubin?
gen, published reports ol cases In which lie
had, by the use of strychnia, restored sight to
patients suffering Irom decay ol vision or ft om
blindness. Strychnia, as is well known, is a
deadly poison, but it has a wonderlul effect In
stimulating the nervep; and Professor Nagel
found that in diseases of the optic nerve,
whether functional or organic, its operation
was alike speedy and efficacious. The quan?
tity used ls, of course, exceedingly sinall-one
fortieth of a grain mixed wllh water-and this
solution ls not to be swallowed, but ia injected
under the skin of. one ot the arms, which
seems to render the result the more
remarkable. This remedy has been tried by
oculists elsewhere with marked succepi; and
among recent Instances occurs a naval cap?
tain, aged fllty-two, whose sight was so much
Impaired that he required to be led about.
Within a tew minutes after the injection, as
above described, the fog which darkened
his eyes became less dense, and an im?
pression of light was perceptible. After
three days' use of the remedy, (an Injection
night and morning,) he could make out the
furniture of th? ward with sufficlent.clearness
to guide himself about without feeling; "and
on the fourth day of treatment, without help,
he succeeded at midday in walking alone
through the thoroughfares of the city to the
home of his famllv, a mile li om the infirmary."
May we not hope* from this experience that
henceforth the number ol cases ol blindness
will be largely diminished.-Chambers's Jour?
nal.
