taxes due was resumed yesterday at 12 M,
with but a small attendance. Twelve pieces

other, consisting of a lot, with building, In
Dereef s court, belonging to P. Y. A. Peach
eraud, was knocked down to J. D. Kennedy.

THE PSBSZ ISQCSST.-Aa inquest was held
yesterday morning, at the coroner's office,
upon the body of Raphael Perez, who was
shot the evening before In Marke tstreet, In
an affray with Francis Y>ctor Valdez. Lieu?
tenant Chapman and private O'Keeie ot the
police loree were examined, and testified
mainly aa to the arrest of Valdez. The testi?
mony ot private O'Keefe went to show that
Perez fired the first shot, and both of the o ul?
cera testified that at the house in George
street their ingress waa opposed by a woman
and not by Valdez. Aa soon as they had en?
tered, the latter surrendered himself. Tue
jury adjourned over until eleven o'clock this
morning, without taking any further testi?
mony. Valdez ls held under arrest at the
Guardhouse, subject to the order of the cor?
oner.

HENDRICKS ARRESTED AND BAILED.-H. W.
Hendricks, whose cowardly attack upon Mr.
John A. MOTOBO, of the Courier, was described
in THE NEWS of yesterday, was arrested yes
! terday morning upon a charge of assault with
a deadly weapon, and assault and battery. He
was carried before Trial Justice J. G. Mackey
for examination, and was bound over In the
Bum of five hundred dollars to appear for
trial at the next session of the Criminal
Conrt.
AQUATIC-Under the impetus or the recent
regatta, we understand that another boat
club ls forming, and will soon take Its stand
by the side of the other two. The new club ls
spoken of as the "Atlantic," and among its
movers are a number of young oarsmen,
whose skill and muscle will make the Atlan
tlcs worthy rivals of their elder brethren. A
meeting wlli be held shortly, and as soon as
organized the new club propose getting out a
fine boat.
MOUNTED DRILL.-The Charleston Social
Mounted Club assembled yesterday alternoon
in full- uniform, at the corner of Line and
Bh.ppb.erd streets, and marching up to John?
son's Farm had a good drill for nearly two
hours. About thirty members paraded, all
well mounted, and made a fine appearance
while practicing their tilting. Warden Haw?
thorne and Secretary Liebenrood contended
for a bowl of punch. They each ran three
tilts and tied each lime, but on the fourth the
sword proved weightier than the pen, and the
secretary was beaten. The punch was dis?
cussed to the satisfaction of aU the members
on their return from the drill.
CLUBS AND STARS.-Wm. Hasel, lodged for
being drunk and jalslng a disturbance on
East Bay, was fined one dollar.
Lafayette Woolfe, arrested for firing his
pistol at half-past twelve A. M. yesterday in
King street, was fined five dollars.
Francis Victor Valdez, the young Cuban,
lodged for snooting and killing Raphael Perez?
in Market street, Just weet of Meeting, was
turned over to the order of the coroner.

THE CROPS.-The Intelligence In reference to the
growing crops have presented, on the whole, a
very favorable aspect, and the progress at present
seems to be quite promising. There are still
complaints, howey o' a want of rain in Iocall

ent. Information from the rice fields mention
the appearance of the caterpillar on some ol the
plantai lons, which may eau i e damage. The New
Orleaus Cotton Exchange have made their first
report on the cotton crop for the season, and
they give, as the area planted, an Increase or
about six per cent. In Mississippi, of five per cent.
In Louisiana, eighteen per cent, in Texas, twenty
two per cent, m Arkansas, tineen per cent. In
Tennessee, ten to twelve per cent, in Alabama,
twenty-two per cent, in North Carolina, seven
and a half per cent, m South Carolina, ten per
cent, in Georgia, six per cent. In Florida.
THE BECBIPTS.-The arrivals at the cotton ports
for the week up to Friday last were 10,763 bales,
against 13,117 bales the week before asd 28,136
bales for the time of the year previous. At New
Orleans the supplies were 1870 bales. In contrast
with 7876 bales for the week of last year. Toe total
receipts at the cotton ports from september 1,
1871, up to the latest dates were 2.861,663 bales,
against 3,838,200 bales the year previous, showing
a decrease or 1,176,687 bales. The arrivais at
the principal Southern ports from Septem?
