MEETING OF COUNCIL. A regular meeting of Council waB held yes? terday afternoon at ihe usual hour. Present1 the Mayor, and Aldermen CNelll, Bowen, Smith, Voigt, Gage, Garrett, Michaels, Swee gan, Glover, Johnston, Moran, Pelzer, Sig wald and Simonas. PETITIONS were read and dispeled of, aa follows: Of C. T. Lowndes, trustee of John Fraser aTco., In reference to a lot and building of his trust estate, on the east aide of East Bay street, asking that Its sale to the city be con? summated, and that Council take measures to facilitate the transfer ot property to the elly and the payment of the taxes now due. Be ferred to the committee on streets. Of certain occupants of the Union Widows' Home, showing that they were aged and suf? fering from various physical deformities, and asking that the charity be continued, and the project of abolishing the Hor * be given up. Referred to the committee on retrenchment and relief. Of the Morris Street Baptist Church, to have a lamp lighted In front of the church on Morris street. Granted. REPORTS OP crrr OFFICERS. Tba Mayor stated orally that since the 1st of June one hundred new lamps had been lighted In the city, and the same number would be added every week until every one ot the city lamps should be lighted; the new lamps coaling the city tweniy-seven dollars apiece, while the old ones cost forty-four dol? lars. REPORTS OF STANDING COMMITTEES. Committee on brick and wooden building? reported that they bad granted permission to E. R. White to erect a work-shed, to be prop? erly covered, on - a lot in Meeting street. Agreed to. Committee on retrenchment and relief re-1 ported lavorably upon the account ol J. C. Lacoste for certain expenses In diggi?? a j drain in Pitt street, and recommended the | payment of his bill. Agreed to. Committee on accounts recommended the reference of bills to the amount ol $6464 68 to the city treasurer lor verification and pay? ment. Adopted. Committee on public Institutions, buildings and grounds reported the powder magazine as requiring certain repairs, particularly to the keeper's lodge; also, new posts for the lightning rods, and a general whitewashing and painting. They recommend that the city engineer draw out plans for the work, and that it be done by the city hands under his direction. Adopted. Committee on artesian well reported that they had granted the petition ol G. T. Alford A Co. to tap the water pipe of the artesian well in Meeting Btreet for the Pavilion Hotel on the same terms as those upon which the Charleston Hotel ls allowed the use of the water. Agreed to. Committee on streets recommended the pe? tition of the residents of Mill street for the re? pairing of their sidewalks be granted. As lo the plank road, asked for In the same petition, the committee did not deem lt expedient that the same should be laid at thia season. Adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. Alderman Sweegan here asked If the city hands were not bl red and paid to do rough work about the streets. He did not under? stand lt that they should compete with the mechanics outside, aad upsn this ground he opposed the recommendation ot the commit? tee on public Institutions, Ac., in reference to the repairs on tho Powder Magazine. The matter waa discussed and at length passed over, there being no question made. Alderman Garrett called up a bill to repeal ali ordinances rel ai ive to the re-welghlng ot coal, and to regulate the weighing of the same. Alderman Voigt objected, as it was not the custom fer any <>ne but the mover of a bill to call It op for the second reading. Alderman Gage moved that the bill be in definitely postponed. Carried. Alderman Simonds moved the following ] resolution: Resolved, That the city attorney be instruct? ed to report to Connell what action ls neces? sary to protect the Interest of the city in the Blue Bidge Railroad C mpany. Adopted. Council then adjourned. THE ALARM OF FIRE at a quarter-past seven O'clock last evening, was caused by the burn lng ont of a fool chimney on the premises No. 8, on the north side of Cromwell's court, oc? cupied by a colored man named Christopher Boag. Two engines were out, but did not play. The flamea soon died out. THE VIRGINIA FOR PHILADELPHIA.-This regular steamship will leave Brown's wharf on Friday next, and makes close connection witta mst steamers to Providence and all the New England manufacturing centres. THE WHITE HAT.-A lew days since an un? compromising Democrat, who is now resid? ing among the wilds of Spartanbnrg, came to the city and entering a bat store on King street, called for a hat. Henry Vanderborst, a colorea man, who was badly burned some time back, was lodged ] by his father about one o'clock yesterday morning at the lower Guardhouse, with the request that the Bufferer should be sent to the hospital. It was eo ordered by the Mayor. Sarah Bennett, Elizabeth Menson and Arthur Stafford, ail colored, were brought up for gambling and fighting on the street In the western portion of the city. The evidence showed that the disturbance arose from the Jealousy of Elizabeth, who thought her fianc?, Arthur, intensely too sociable with Sarah, a | young girl from the country, and pitched in accordingly. Elizabeth was sentenced to pay a fine ol one dollar, with an alternative of ten days on the Ashley Blver Farm, and the other two were discharged. DEATH OF MR.
