The proprietors of THE NEWS and The Cou? rier find it indispensable to the accurate and prompt management of their business, and H?or. the protection ?1 advertisers, that the practice of sending advertisements from one aewspaper office to the other be discontinued. The Princess Imperial of Germany (the Princess- Royal of England) was safely de? livered of a girl on the evening of the 22d April -Twenty-seven English immigrants, of the better class-many ot them being ex-offlcen of the British army and navy-have been in? duced to settle In the vicinity ol Ratelgi through the influence of the North Carolin! Land Company. -A dispute ls now waging in Europe ot the comparative merits of different national mo th od s of executing the death penalty.. Thc rivals are Herr Rudorf,-of Prussia, and M, Heidends, of France, who recently published a pamphlet showing, or trying to show, tba bis system of executing was preferable td al others. They ar principally from the counties of Tipperary Limerick, and the northern part of th - County Cork. There are twe "other things which I fear more than that: tbe first Is the Tact that the Irish will vote for Mr. Greeley en masse, and the other ls that it will be* laughing and a singing campaign. I wat a boy and helped laugh and sing Harrison into the White House, and we must not be de eelved or made to believe that Mr. Greeley can be laughed off the Presidential track. Th? Jokes will strengthen him before the people.' r?? -Hon. A. H. 8tephenB, in a lengthy editorial In the Atlanta Sun, pitches into August Bel? mont and his Democratic coadjutors for what he 'styles trying to "hitch the Democratic car to the Radical engine" at Cincinnati by worfc _lng op Charles Francis Adams as a candidate to the Presidency, and comments, in a char* aeterlstio vein, against the policy of giving np the'"Jeffersonian platform," or of Democrats voting fer any other than Democratic candi? dates. He trusts they will not, for a moment, entertain the Idea of choosing between Gene? ral Grant and Mr. Greeley. It ls true, ht says, that- Greeley went bail for Mr. Davie, out Grant prevented the arrest of General Lee. . Besides, he adds, if Greeley has ever raised his voice against either of the "enforcement acts,11 even the Inlamous Ku-Klux act, he 1B not aware of lt. He does not suggest, howev? er, any practical way out of tribulation for his brethren of tbe South. " -The Beauregard domain, consisting ot about three hundred and fifty acres, and situ? ated some two and a half miles from Versailles, is to be sold at public auction some lime this month. It is a very fine place, and was the property of the son of Miss Howard, to whom Louis Napoleon gave it in return for eervlces rendered to him by her after his es? cape from Ham. Miss Howard was much at? tached te Napoleon, spent quite a fortune on him in furtherance of his schemes, and at one time lt waa commonly reported that tbe two were to ie married, as, perhaps, they would have been had not'the Countess de Montijo appeared on the scene. Although the Em? peror would tot marry her, he yet was grate? ful for her good offices, purchased Beaure? gard with ita splendid chateau, warrens and plantations, and presented it to her with the title of Countess de Beauregard. Her son was made Count de Beauregard. The lady died some years before the fall of the second empire. -A New York letter says: "Costumes absorb every spare thought Just at preseut, and they present themselves in a hundred varieties. Lace and fringe are the most popular trim? ming, while combined tints make up the most Btylte? BUitB. Tight-fitting polonaiflefl, caw lesaly looped behind, and also short basques, seem "popular. Just at present sleeveless jackets of velvet are much worn, and occa? sionally a jacket of "fine llama or guipure lace. Ondit that the present style of bonnet Is of the precise mode of 1830. Tbe promenade dress is made with the skirt just touching the ground, and ll of black silk, with one deep flounce put on In grouped plaits; above-'this are two or three bias folds, finished off with a stand-up quilling. Over this may be worn a polonaise of black and white striped silk, the polonaise looped very high at the sides with bows of black ribbon, and the front of the cor Bago trimmed with revers o? black Bilk. A collar o? black Bilk, extending down to the middle of the back, skirt trimmed with fringe and loops and tassels, stylishly completes such a suit. Cravats are nearly all trimmed with Talenciennes lace or fringe. Gilt and shell combs are much used, aa curls make up the favorite coiffure. The new shade of gray In Cashmere ls very popular, and a polonaise of this material over black Bilk is very comme tl faut." -A theatre In ruins is necessarily one of the gloomiest Bights possible, the contrast be? tween supernatural magnificence and chaotic dinginess being so great and oppressive. The scene alter the fire at Niblo's, therefore, must have been of all scenes most gloomy, on ac? count of the extraordinary magnificence ol the property deatroyed. The four smoking and blackened walls formed an appropriate frame for the picture. Within them, Instead of dazzling chandeliers, brilliant scenery and lovely women, there was to be seen nothing bnta repulsive mass ol ruins. From unex? plored depths below the stage there came a volume of steam and smoke, and occasionally a rumbling like the threatenings of Vesuvius. In the auditorium lt was all a mass of broken chairs and solas. "Behind the scenes" there was a conglomerated mixture of half-burned dresses, fancy costumes, swords, muskets, helmets, io. Scores of spectators surveyed the prospect and walked gingerly about, pick? ing up mementoes o? departed grandeur. The actors, who stood mournlully around, thought with a sigh of their frustrated hopes, bnl smiled as they remembered bow the familial stage went the way of all the earth ant'd the grandest "transformation scene" ever. at tempted upon it; and the souls ol these mourners are to be shortly comforted bj nnmerous "benefits." The Political Whirligig. We print to day a highly interesting re? view of the political situation by onr shrewc New York correspondent. As our readers know, we deem Mr. Greeley's prospects fat brighter, and his support by the public mach stronger, than oar correspondent assumes; but as TBS NEWS is a newspaper, not an organ, we never refuse to print an honest expression of opinion merely because it differs from our own. The Three Great States. . A circular jost issued by the Department of Agriculture at Washington, gives expres? sion to an apprehension that cotton seed I and ita product are gradually deteriorating in quality and quantity, and tenders to the planters the organized co-operation of the Department in any movement to benefit the cotton-growing interest. To the end that ? such co-operation maybe more intelligent and efficient, the following queries have been addressed to prominent planters: 1. Have the cotton seed and cotton crop de? teriorated in quantity or quality, or both ? 2. To what do you attribute such deteriora I tion, If such there be ? 3. Contd this department aid by any means to promote the interests of cotton planting, and how ? 4. In what respect is deterioration most manifest ? 5. What varieiy o? cotton is the best, and what ls its origin? 6. Is ita common prauice to 6elect the best bolls lor seed ? 7.
