LAWS OF THE STATE. ACTS OE THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OE SOUTH CAROLINA. Published by Authority. AN ACT to Regulate the Issuing of Checks to Laborera upon Plantations, or elsewhere. SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State o? South Carolina, now met and sitting In General As? sembly, and by the authority of the same: That unless -otherwise provided for by spe? cial contract, It shall be, and it la hereby re? quired, of all persons who employ laborers opon plantations or' elsewhere, by the day, week, month or year, to pay such laborers or employees In United States bank notes or fractional currency." Sac. 2. That l,lf any person or persons, siter the passage of this act, shall offer to any laborer or employee,- except a3 provided for An the preceding section, as compensation for labor or services performed, checks or scrip of any description ia lieu of United States bank notes or fractional currency, the said person or persons so offending shall be liable to in? dictment and punishment by a fine not ex? ceeding one hundred dollars, and by Imprle .onment not exceeding twenty days, or both, according to the discretion of the court:" Pro? vided, That the word checks in this act shall not be construed so aa to prohibit the giv? ing of checks upon any of tbe authorized ?tanks of deposit or issue in this State. Be lt enacted by tbe Senate and House of Representatives of tbe State of South Carolina, now met and sitting in Gen ?ral Assembly, and by the authority of the same: That John Byrne, W. H. Berney, J. W. Mil? lee, G. M. Magrath, J. P. Howard, Isaac Reed, and such other persons as may now or here- ] siter shall be associated with ibem, are here? by made and declared to be a body polillo and corporate, by the name and style of the Journeymen Mechanics' Union of Charleston, AC. ?Ssc. 2. That the association aforesaid shall "have succession of officers and members, ac? cording to its by-laws, and shall have power to make by-laws not repugnant to the laws of | the land, use and keep a common seal, and .the sam? to alter at will, to sue and be sued, -and plead and be Impleaded, In any oourt In this State. AN ACT Conferring upon the County Com? missioners Certain Powers In relation to the License and Sale ot Intoxicating Liquors. SECTION 1. Be lt enacted by the Senate and .House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, now met and silting In Gene? ral Assembly, and by the authority of the same: That all the powers and duties heretofore -conferred npon the commissioners of roads In the various districts of this State, in relation to the license and sale of Intoxicating liquors, be, and they are hereby, conferred upon the county commissioners. This act to take effect on and after its passage. Approved March 9, 1872. AN ACT to Amend the Charter of the Town of | Lancaster. SECTION L Be it enacted by the Senate and ?House of Representatives of the State of I } South Carolina, now met and silting in Gene tal Assembly, and by the authority of the ?same: That from and after the passage of this act all citizens of this 8tate, having resided sixty days In the Town of Lancaster, shall be deem? ed, and are hereby declared to be, a body pol? itic and corporate, and tbe said town shall be called and known by the name of Lancaster, sud Its corporate limits shall extend one mile In each direction from the courthouse it town. SEC. 2. That the eald town shall be erned by an Intendant and four wardens, shall be citizens of the United Statee, shall have been residents of the Bald tow; sixty days Immediately preceding their tion, who shall be elected on the second : day in April, In every year, ten days' p notice thereof being previously given, an male Inhabitants twenty-one (21) years of citizens of the State, who shall have res in the said town for sixty dar? Immedl? preceding the election, shall be entitled to for said Intendant and wardens. SEC 3. That the election for intendant wardens of Bald town shall be held in courthouse, or some other place convenlei the said town, lrom eight o'clock In the m lng until five o'clock In the ai ter neon; when the polls shall be closed, the mana shall forthwith count the votes, and proc the election, and give notice in writing to persons elected. The chairman of the b< of county commissioners shall appoint tl managers to hold the ensuing and any su quent election. The managers, in each c before they open the polia for said elect shall take an oath fairly and impartially conduct the same. And the Intendant wardens, before enteiidg on the dutie their respective offices, shall take the c prescribed by the constitution of this st and also the following oath, to wit : "At tendant (or warden) of the Town of Lam ter, I will equally and Impartially, to the I Of my ability, exercise the trust reposed in i .and will use my best endeavors to prese: the peace, and to carry Into effect, accord to law, the purpose for which I have b* elected. So help me God." The said Int dant and wardens shall hold their offices fr the time of their election, until the sect Monday in April ensuing, and until their s cessors shall be elected and qualified. SEC. 4. That the said town council of Lt castor shall have power to arrest and corni to Jail, fora space of time not exceed! twelve hours, and to fine, not exceed! twenty (20) dollars, any person or perse who shall be guilty of disorderly conduct i said' town, to the annoyance of cltlze thereof. SECTION 1. Be It enacted by the Senate ai House of Representatives of the State of Sou Carolina, now met and sitting in General A sembly, and by the authority of the same: That Alfred Williams, Robert Smalls, W. Whipper, J. Douglass Robertson, Dav Thomas, N. B. Myers, Francis E. Wilde James M. Crofut, Geo. Holmes, H. J. Ma: well and J. B. Bascomb, and their associate and successors, are hereby made and declare a body politic and corporate In law, under 11 name and style of the Beaufort Manufactu lpg and Improvement Company, for the pu pose of extracting and manufacturing oil froi cotton seed, and other seeds or grain, and fe the purpose of carrying on such other bus ness connected therewith, with a capital c one hundred thousand dollars, to be divide Into one thousand shares of one hundred do lars each. ? SEO. 2. The said company shall have power from time to time, to Increase their capiti Btook to any amount, not exceeding two hue dred and.flfty thousand dollars, including the! present capital stock, whenever a majority o the stockholders present, at any general meei lng, Bhail determine. That for the purpose of carrying thc products of their manufacture to or from anj railroad or place of shipment upon the Island of Port Royal, the said company ls herebj vested with all the rights and powers, privi? leges and franchises granted to the Enterprise Railroad Company ol Charleston, by the aol of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, incorporating said company, ap proved March first, eighteen hundred and sev? enty, and March ninth, eighteen hundred and seventy-one: Provided, That the line of said road, BO far as It affects the Town of Beaufort, shall be fixed and established by the Intendant and connell thereof. SEC. 5. That the said company shall have suc? cession of officers and members, to be chosen according to the rules and by-laws made, and to be made, for their government and direc? tion, and shall have power and authority to make by-laws, not repugnant to the laws of the land, to make, have and use a common seal, and the same to alter at will, to sue and be eued, to plead and be Impleaded, In any court of law and equity, to purchase and hold any lands, tenements or hereditaments, goods or chattels which may be necessary, connec? ted with, or conducive to the purposes for which sa'd company is established. SKC. 6. The said corporation shall not go Into operation until thirty thousand dollars ot the capital stock shall be paid, In gold or silver, or United States treasury notes; and an oath or affirmation of the payment thereof shall be made by the pr?sident, treasurer, and a ma Joiity of the boaid of directors, which shall be recorded In the secretary of States office, and published In any newspaper In the Town or Beaufort, or as near the establish? ment as circumstances will admit. Approved March 9,1872. AN ACT. to Incorporate the Nazareth Presby? terian Church, of Spartanburg County. SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, now met and sitting In General As? sembly, and by the authority of the same : That the members of the corporation known as the "Nazareth Presbyterian Church," in the County o? Spartanburg, together with the offi? cers and members of Bald corporation be, and are hereby, declared to be a body politic and corporate by ibe name and style of the Nazareth Presbyterian Church, and as such shall have power to adopt such constitution, and to make such by-laws as may be necessary for the gov? ernment o? the same, and not repugnant to laws ol this State, shall have such council, trustees, elders and deacons, their successors in office, as they may select, to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, by their corpo? rate title, In any court of law or equity in this State, to have and U3e a corporate seal, to have and enjoy every right, power and privilege In Cident to such corporations ; and the said cor? poration Is empowered to hold, retain, possess and enjoy all such property, real and personal, as the corporation may hereafter possess, or be entitled to, or which shall hereafter be given, bequeathed, or devised to, or in any way acquired, and to sell and transfer the same, or any part thereof, and enjoy and ex? ercise all rights, powers and privileges as are incident to such corporations.
