LANGLEY GOODS.-The goods of the Langley
Manufacturing Company have now attained a
firm footing la the market and bric g their
value. The prices have been recently
advanced, and axe now as follows: "A,"
heavy drills, 15$; UB," heavy drills. 15; stand?
ard 4 4 sheeting, 15; "A" 1-4 stating, 14$; |
standard 7-8 shirting, 12$; "A" 7-8 shining, 12.
CLUBS AND STARS were in a fearful state of |
depreciation yesterday. The united vigilance
of the guardians of the municipal quiet could
only master a single offender against the peace
of the city, in the person of one unfortunate
inebriate, who was too badly shot in the neck
with benzine to turn the corner of King and
Wentworth streets. The Mayor fined him a
dollar._
THE CONFEDERATE HOVE.-The board of I
control of the Confederate Home gratefully
acknowledge obligations to the Charleston
Ch a nab er of Commerce, for the courteous and
generous reception given at their- rooms on
Saturday last, to the pupils of the Home
School. The occasion will ever be remem?
bered with pleasure and gratitude, as well lor
Itself as for the considerate, kindly and patri?
otic feeling which lt expressed.
ST. PATRICK'S DAY IN NEW TORE.-The
New York World says:
St. Patrick's dav this year is to be a legal
holiday; all banks' and public offices will be
closed, and private sbeps also, and tue various
lines of omnibuses will desist from running,
-whilst religious services will be held In the
churche3 of all Christian denominations.
The banks of this city, also, will be closed
for the same reason, and, of course, we shall
get no "market reports" on that day.
HANDSOME OFFICES.-Messrs. E. Behring &
Co., agents of the North British and Mercan?
tile Insurance Company, have removed lcom
their old quarter.-', and are now fairly Installed
In their new offices in the old Bank of the
State building, at the northwest corner of
Broad and State streets. These offices are
among the very handsomest in the city., The
white marble fronts and huge plate glass win?
dows make them solidly conspicuous, and
they are fitted up with every convenience for
the rapid and secure transaction of a large
business.
FOB THE TRIAL JUSTICES.-Peter Daniels,
committed to Jail for an assault with a knife
uponga lady In Market street sometime ago,
was brought before two trial justices on a
writ of habeas corpus on Monday afternoon,
and after an examination his bail was fixed at
three hundred dollars. The prisoner after |1
some trouble furnished the required sureties,
but the sheriff refused to receive the bond on 1
the ground that the trial Justices had no Juris- I
diction In tho matter of the habeas corpus 1
while the State Circuit Court is In session. 1
The prisoner was forthwith recommitted to 1
the Jail to await his trial. <

A JAUNTY CRAFT.-Yesterday morning, ]
about nine o'clock, the little schooner yacht
Francena, of Boston, arrived in the harbor j
from Savannah, In charge of Mr. W. C. Reed, l
her owner, and Captain John Spear, of Ne- (
ponset. These.daring excursionists left Boston i
In their yacht last fall, and came down the
Atlantic coast, stopp!og at New London, New | j
York, the Delaware Breakwater, Norfolk and
other places. They have been spending the
winter on the Florida coast, and recently left
the Sr. John's Blver. Their call at Charleston
is a part of their programme, and they will
also entertain proposais for the s aie of their
little vessel.
The Francena is a neat little schooner of
five toa?, painted white, was built at Boston,
and draws five feet of water. Her Interior is
handsomely titted up, and she has more room
than is usual In a vessel of her Biz?. This 13
obtained by the arrangement of the patent
iron centre-board, which Bhuts In like a lady's
fan and occupies a very small space. The
Francena has proved herself by her lengthy
voyage and the bad weather she has experi?
enced on our coasts. She left Savannah at
two o'clock Monday afternoon, and at two
o'clock yesterday morning was off the Charles?

br a horse to the former, and a bridle, mar- {
Ingale and whip to Lieutenant King, for their I
.kill and perseverance in tracing a burglary.

pliment to the whole police force.
CONDITION OF THE SCHOOLS.-At the month?
ly meeting of the school commissioners, held
last Wednesday evening, the verbal reporta of
Che commissioners assigned to tbe several
schools were received, showing a wholesome
condition of things in this important branch
)f education, and a flattering increase in the
lumber of attending pupils. This indicates
:o the commissioners at once the necessity of
naklng arrangements for the opening of i
lew school for their accommodation. At
)resent there Is no school open in the lower |
lart of the city, and the continual additions
o the number of pupils suggests that the
friend-street School be at once rebuilt and
>pened. The matter is one of the highest
sonsequence, and, if our school commission?
ers report Its feasibility, it is hoped thal the
mdertaklng will receive the spacial sanction
md aid of the Legislature, and be carried
nto effect at an early day.

ACADEMY OF MUSIC-The sprightly little
burlesque actress and her excellent company
enjoyed another flattering testimonial to their
merits In the large and select audience which
filled the Academy last evening. The per?
formance was a varied one, and, in two very
dissimilar pieces, the cleverness and versatili?
ty of the charming Mrs. Oates were shown to
great advantage. Nan, the Good-for-Nothlng,
in the opening piece, is one of her specialties,
and she portrayed the mischievous, good?
hearted and frolicsome hoyden with a truth?
fulness and life which called forth the enthu?
siastic applause of the house. Ia the con?
cluding piece, " The Priam Donna ol a
Night," she was all animation and grace, and
astonished her hearers by the compass and
sweetness of her finely-trained voice. Her
supports were good, and Messrs. Allen and
Drew were warmly applauded. To-night we
have Buckstone's .-Child of the Regiment''
an uAn Alarming Sacrifice."
SUPREME COURT DECISION'S.-COLUMBIA,
MARCH ll.-The State vs. Cornelius London;
new trial ordered. Opinion by Wright, A. J.;
Moses, C. J., and Willard, A. J., concurred.
Held: In general, it is the province ol the
jury to determine to which side lt will give
preponderating weight, where the testimony
is conflicting, and this cannot be assumed by
the court. Where, however, the proof shows
that one ingredient or element necessary to
constitute the offence is wanting, lt is the
right and duty ol the court so to declare to
the Jury.
Mary Johnson vs. City Council of Charles?
ton; new trial ordered. Opinion by Willard,
A. J.; Moses, C. J., and Wright, A. J., con?
curred. Held: That the corporation were
only bound to exercise ordinary care and
vigilance In keeping the surface of the street,
including the structure forming part thereof,
in repair, so as to be safe for passengers.

CHARLESTON, March 12, 1872. J
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEWS.
In your notice this morning of the detention
of the Northward Accommodation train yes-1
terday afternoon, you mislead the public by
the statement of the trestle "havlDg given
way, which fact was fortunately discovered in
time to avoid accident." This account of the
cause of the detenllen ls entirely incorrect,'
and you will oblige me by Inserting the fol?
lowing brief statement: The workmen were
engaged in the ordinary repairs ol the trestle
aLBantowles Creek, and undertook to renew
a portion of that work in the interval between
trains. In this expectation they were disap
pointed, the afternoon passenger train arriv?
ing at the spot belora the completion of the
repairs, and thus losing the schedule, was
obliged to walt for the passage of the evening
train. The arrival here was made two, not
three hours behind time.
