PARADE.-Yesterday morning the artillery
company at the Citadel passed up King street
with their guns, caissons, ic. In warlike
array. The company was bent upon no'pur?

IMPROVEMENT.-A fine two-story brick build-1

west side of King BI reef. A beginning had
been made here some time ago, but yesterday
the work was taken in hand by Mr. John H.
Devereux, and it will soon be completed. The
property Is owned by Mr. Heins, and the pro.

SERIOUS MAIL IRREGULARITIES.-A sub?
scriber at Statesburg informs us that the mails
reach that place very irregularly. He says the
mails from the North, when they do not utterly
miscarry, reach Statesburg in about ten days,
and letters, newspapers, Ac, may, at times, be
picked np by the persons to whom they axe*
addressed* at the different depots between
Siateftburg and Kingsville. These be serious
complaints, and we trust that they will receive
the prompt attention of the department.
THE NEW .ENGINE. -The Palmetto ??re Com?
pany of Columbia, received their steam engine
from Charleston on Thursday morning. It is j
a .third-class engine, rather lighter than the
Independent's, and built by William Jeffers, at I
Pawtticket, Rhode Island. Ile capacity ranges
air the way'from six tb thirty-horse power.
It ls of first-class workmanship, and is war?
ranted for twelve months. It will not only
be a great addition to the fire department, but
a great ornament also.* The trial will take
place next week.
FOREIGN EXPORTS.-There was cleared yes.

say, io my simple way, that she ls truly great
I the greatest actress I have ever seen. Some

greater than Janauscheck, others give the
palm to the Bohemian. Her greatness is
shown, I think-, not so much in the display or
iu the reserve ol' her power. Her voice never J
breaks or fallers. In the very acme ol pas?
sion the exact accentuation ls given. You
could not wish it different. It ls the very;
music of high-wrought feeling. Some Wee I
kept back, which if given would degenerate
ali into rant, and at the precise moment when
rant would be utterly intolerable. She brings I
her own company with her. This ls .a great J

ali, but most of them are good, and Weaver
Levlck and Alice Placide particularly so.
Poor as we are, Janauschek has had crowded
houses,'and, but that Lent begins to-day, the j
theatre would scarcely hold the audiences of |

RELICS OF THE FIRE.-The doors of two cars'
containing corn In bulk, which arrived here
from Chicago by the South,Carolina Railroad,
on Thursday, were secured by two pieces of j
charred wood taken from the burnt district at]
Chicago. If "Imperial Ctesar, turned to clay,
might slop a hole," a fragment of a Chicago
palace may, without blushing, block the door
of a car,
FTEB IN TRATMANN- .STEHET.-Between one
and two o'clock yesterday morning, a Ure
broke out in the old wooden building In Trap- j
mann street, used a? a Confederate hospital In j
the late war. It was fortunately extinguished
before it got well under way. The building ls j
inhabited by a number of colored families, and
the chilly proprietors of one of the depart- ?
ment s bad made up a fire in the middle of the
door, npon a sballow box full of earth. They
awoke In the night almost stifled with smoke, j
and found the whole floor in a blaze. The j
alarm was given, and biher tenants rushing I
lo, the fire was Boon extinguished. This was
most fortunate, as the high wind blowing at j
the time would have extended the conflagra?
tion throughout the neighborhood, which con?
sists principally of wooden houses.
THE COURTS YESTERDAY.-In tbe Court)
General Sessions the following cases were dis?
posed of: John Westervelt, burglary and
larceny. Colonel B. W. Seymour for the de- j
fence. Not''guilty. George P. Habenicht,
assault and battery. K. S. ?harln, Esq., for]
the prosecution, and John G. Mackey, Esq.
for tbe defence. The Jury was 'unable to j
agree, so mlsstrial was ordered. Jos. Ball,
disfiguring a COW. Nol pros entered by order j
of the court Augustus Carr, breach'of trust
and attempting to obtain money under false j
pretences. Nol pros entered and prisoner
discharged. George F. Habenicht, assault and I
battery. Nol pros entered by order of the

Trial fixed for this morning.

hearing the testimony tor the defence inthe!
case of Farmer vs. Sanders.
DE CASTRO. - The reappearance ol this
magician drew a fair house at the Academy
of Music last evening, when the wizard pro?
duced in succession a number ol his most'
startling tricks. There were people in the
galleries and in the orchestra chairs;and from
above, below and each side sharp eyes watch?
ed his manipulations, which were conducted
in a masterly manner. Large bouquets grew
[rom flower pots at his bidding, lifeless skele?
tons Jigged lt merrily upon common chairs to
the tune of Fisher's hornpipe; borrowed hand?
kerchiefs were torn to ribbons and turned
ap whole, and a host of other tricks,
some new, many old, but all equally
wonderful, were performed with remarkable
dexterity. Not the least'attractive feature of
the evening was the small lottery at the end
where the prizes were distributed. Tickets,
some containing numbers nod some blanks,
liad been given to the visitors as they entered,
ind those who wiahed to speculate could also
jorobase them. At the ead of the perfor
nance a little girl drew the numbers, and the
leider of the first number drawn got a fifty
1 ollar billi the holder of the second number a
'liver watch and so on, each number drawing
i prize.' These cbnelstlpg of glass, books,
:hlna. chairs, ?c., were all distributed to the
