The Crime ?nd the Penalty.
Tho witnesses for the proseen'ion, in the
recent Kn-Kiux trials at Columbia, were not
alow in telling their tale of outrage and
wrong. They described every threat, every
raid, every whipping and pooching, every
%crt of violence, great or Email, of which
they ' had any knowledge. Their diEpo?
sition was, we suppose, to exaggerate the
number and gravity of the offences with
which the prisoners were charged. And we
may fairly assume, therefore, that the crimes
reported on oath try the Government wit?
nesses .are all the crimes with which the Ko
Klux, in the districts from which the wit?
nesses were taken, can, even by their relent?
less pars uer?., be charged. A comparison of
these crimes with the number of convictions,
and with the sentences Jmposed by the conrt,
' will show, -tl ie ref ore, the proportion of the
pnnistunent to the offence.

Prisoners convicted and sentenced.sa
For every whipping, for every innocuous
raid, and for every person abased, more
than one prisoner has been tried, convicted
and sentenced. And we have the authority
of the Columbia Union for the statement
that the Grand Jury have indicted "over
"five hundred.persons, for conspiracy, out?
rage and murder, in the Counties of York,
"Spartanburg and Union." Most of these re?
main untried. There are, moreover, scores of
prisoners, neither indicted nor tried, who
must languish io jail or give heavy bail for
their appearance at the next term of the
Court.
Is it not plain that the actual punishment
far exceeds the real offence? Barely "the
"manes of the dead" should now be appeas?
ed. For every real or fictitious whipping, a
white citizen bas been sent to jail. The
suspected conspirators are paying the heavy ?
price of their o^n misdeeds or of those of their
neighbors. Vengeance has been swift and
sharp. And yet, if we may trust the Radi?
cal press, what is called ' 'Justice" is not
satisfied, and we shall have yet another
