Thomas Fosberry, Emma E. Fidea, (widow of
the murdered man,) F. W. Hey ward, Toney

more.

charged with murder, was discharged from
custody, the jury having found no bill against
him- Jesse Chisolm, charged with murder
a!oi^ with Matthewes, is still at large.
STOPPING THE HOLES_A few days ago a
suspicious looking cavity appeared in the
middle o? Broad street, a short distance east
of King, which, besides toing a dangerous
trap for animals, threatened to increase In
size. The place was at once marked, and In?
spector Lucas with a number of bands began
to reconnoitre the premises. The cavity,
though small on the surface, proved more ex?
tensiv than at first expected; but the work?
men went to work with a vim, and yesterday
alternoon the finishing touches were put upon
the work. The cavity below has been filled
np, and a raised surface, which, under tie
trampling of vehicles, will speedily forma
solid level, now marks the place where the
the cavity was visible on Tuesday.

Quarrel-The Shooter Arrested.
About one o'clock yesterday morning the
home of Patrick Shnnahau, ar No. 15 Sires
street, became the scene of a ?ftightful trage?
dy, which was owing principally to tbe
drunkenness of the head of the family. The
latter WOM all seated around the table at din?
ner when Shanahan, who was in a state of in?
toxication, began ta quarrel with his wife
Juli?. She replied to him, and be, becoming
enraged, started up and tried to strike her
with his fists. Knowing his wajs of old, the
woman rushed ont of the room and house
and into the yard ol a uei?lib3r for protec?
tion. Shanahan followed, and came up with
her in the neighbor's kitchen, where he drew
a pistol upon her. She caught him by tho
coat and begzed him, f jr God's sake, not to
shoot her. Without listening to her, he dis?
charged the pistol, and the ball, striking her
In tte leit thigh, passed directly through and
lodged in her right. She sank down, and
the neighbors lelng attracted by the shot
rushed In and secured Shanahan.
He was taken at once te the Upper Guard?
house, where he was placed under custody,
and wi 1 b9 br miaX before the Mayor this
morning. Mrs. Shanahan was taken borne,
aud Dr. Lockwood having been called in, her
wound received every attention. When last
hear? from she was suffering great pain and
the ball had not been extracted. Her wounds
are serious, but are not considered dangerous.
The pistol med by Shanahan oa the occa?
sion is a fearful weapon, belog an antique j
donble-barrel machine, covered with the rust
of age .. und carrying a large ball. The second
barrel, which was not discharged, is loaded up
to the muzzle, and seem3 as dangerous to the
person discharging it as the perron at whom
it may be shot. Shanahan is one of the old
policemen, and wa3 discharged a lew days
ago from the Upper Guardhouse lor continued
drunkenness. His conduct In this case has
certainly sustained the decidion ol the officers.
THE COMET FAIR.-The fair ol the Comet
Fire Engine Company was opened Monday
evening at the Military Hall, and ls nightly at?
tracting crowds. The hall i3 handsomely ar?
ranged with evergreens and flags, and the va?
rious tables around the edge of the spacious
apartment make a tempting display. DurlDg
the evening the assembled company are re?
galed wi.h the inspiring airs of Mitchell's
Siring Band, and Terpsichorean effusions ara
with difficulty restrained among the young
people. The fair is conducted in an orderly
and quiet macner. which well merits the
patronage .of the public, and reflects credit
upon the Cimet Fire Engine Company.
PAINFUL ACCIDENT.-About seven o'clock,
Tuesday evening, Moses Stephens, a colored
man, forty-four years ol 'age, while walking
aboard of the stemshlp Georgia, lying al
Union wharf, made a misstep In the dark, and
was precipitated from the upper deck to-ihe
bottom of the hold ol the ship. He waa taken
up in an unconscious condition, and having
gradually recovero 1. was taken to the City
Hospital. Upon examination lhere, it was
found that the lower end of his left thigh
bone was broken into several pi?ces, and his
back aras also severely Injured. - At last ac?
counts be was doing reasonably well, and lt is
hopettthat he w 1! recover wimont the loss of
his leg.
PHILIP JOHNSON PORCHER.-Our community
will bear with regret of the death of this esti?
mable gentleman, who breathed his lest yes?
terday morning, at his residence on South
Bay, *n ihe sixty-seventh year of his age.
Mr. Porcher was a native of Charleston, and,
though wiae.y known for the genial and at?
tractive traits ot his character* never mingled
in public lile. He was for many years a planter
lo St.John'? ?erkeley.but ls principally known
among oar business men as a successful bro?
ker, and in connection with the Southwestern
Railroad Bank. His relined a lt made him an
ornament of the social circle, and he was
noted for the hospitality wnlch was the chv
acterlstlc of his generat'on. His death was
the result of a general f ii lng ol his health.
1 The funeral takes place this morning, at St.
