Cohen, for a long time connected with the firm of J. A. Ens low ds Co., and Mr. J. Seabrook Wells, latea member of the firm pf Wm. Roach & Co., have gone into the commission and brokerage business under the style of Cohen ? Wells. We wish the new firm ever; success. CLUBS AND STARS.-Hector Gardner, arrest? ed by the detectives on the charge of steal ine turkeys, fancy pigeons, rabbits, Ac, was referred to a trial justice for prosecution. Three parties, representing the extreme de? grees of inebriation, were locked up In the Guardhouse and fined one dollar by the Mayor. They all paid up without awaiting the alternative. No STORK QUITE.-About six o'oloek yester? day evening, a telegram from the clerk of I the weather ls, Washington ordered a caution arv sjgnal for Charleston. The red light was I duly^displayed from the staff, but a cloudless 11 sky, with Increasing cold, combated the Idea of a storm. At ten o'clock the signal still 11 hung out, but the expected storm seemed as I, remote as ever, and everything Indicated that for once the weather prophets had made a mistake. .- j1 THE POSTOFFICE CHANGE.-The occupation I ' of the new Postoffioe by the department, in 11 this city, which was expected to have: taken place last evening, bas been deferred for a time, the new Po steffi ce not being quite fin- I < ished, and the required permission from the j < Department at Washington to anticipate the j < Jkrmal turning over by the contractor not I < naring been received. COURT] TO-DAT.-There was no Court of J General Sessions held yesterday, bia. Honor 11 Judge Graham having adjourned the court I until this mornlbg and gone to Columbia. To-1, day the trial of the Oakley murder case takes place, and the chua\?? of a jury from the panel of one hundred will probably occupy fte greater part of the day. Thirty witnesses I have been summoned for the defence, and 1 there being twice as many for the State, the 11 trial prom i BC 3 to be a protracted one, and to 11 ooeupy several days. ^ * J1 DJUTH or AN ESTEEMED CITIZEN.-Mr. John ' Mejfcr, formerly a resident of this city, but i latterly of Blackville, 8. C., died on the 27th ult. in the sixty-first year of his age. He I emigrated to this country thirty-five years J ago from Buttel Amt Hagan, Hanover. B. Fl dea, at Oakley I Station, on the Northeastern Railroad, died of , consumption on Saturday, at the City Hoepl-1, tal. The prisoner bad freely confessed bis I, participation In the murder, and on the , strength o? his confession a nol. pros, had { been? entered In his case, lu order that he I might turn State's evidence. The trial of the other prisoners takes place to-day, and the , demise of Anthony Isa most timely occurrence , for them, as his statement Imp lcated all of h^em In the murder. THE Saw CCSTOMUOOSE.- The work upon 11 this handsome building ls progressing with I! fresh energy since the return, of the auperln- I tendent, Mr. Oakshof,' who arrived In the city on Friday last. Duriag the s immer the work has never been entirely stopped, and a few hands have been kept steadily employ?!. 11 Additional stonecutters, bricklayers and la? bours have now been set to work by the I superintendent, and, with a full complement of men in every pirt of th9 building,"the I work goes bravely on." The eist front on the river ls nearly.completed according tot the last alterations, and the granite bases ex? tending Out beyond the north and saith j wings, which were intended formerly to sup port columns as on the east and. west sides, are about to be taken away entirety. On ihe west front, a single section of the south col umn of the portico ls all that ls needed to make lt complete, and the column will be finished 03 soon as the section arrives. This is short lyex pee ted' Jn a scheuer, which has already left New York, loaded with cut mar-1 ble to complete the east and west fronts of the building. It may be a matter of some Importance to I our business men to know thar, for the more convenient prosecution of the Work on this I building, all the imported goods which have hitherto been kept In the storehouse uuder I the building have been removed, and are now I stored in the old storehouse in Elliott street. During the present weather the officers locat ed lu the uaflulshed building find their situa ti on anything but agreeable. The roof on the I south and east side? of the building ls off, and the wind and rain have free ingress and egress. The elements are by no means bash? ful lo making use of their advantages, and] should a heavy rain occur the services cf the I coroner may bi needed there. AMUSEMENTS. The Op?r?t ic Cone?rt Ult Stghl. Madame McCulloch-Brlgnoll and her com pany gave their first operatic concert at the Academy of Music last night. The audience was appreciative and select, though not as large as the claims of the lady or her real merit deserved. During her absence from Charleston Mme. Brignoll has Improved in every respect, and her voice now shows the good effect of continued training and inces? sant cultivation. Although apparently some? what preoccupied, she sang with great taste, and with that pleasing softness in the lower notes which seem3 peculiar to her. This was particularly noticeable when she sang "The Last Rose of Summer,"' and responding to the prolonged applause gave "Coming Thro' the Bye." Signor Pacini, the baritone of the company, appeared for the first time in this city, and elicited irequent applause by the ease and force with which he sung. In the Romanza, by Brignoli, he wa? especially good, and dis? played the full powers of his voice to fine ad? vantage! The appearance of Signor Maccaferrl, the tenore robusto, was highly prepossessing, and he had scarcely sung the first verse in "La Donna e Mobile" before the loud ap? plause he received showed that he was already a favorite with the audience. This air was sung with much expression and power, and the artist was not allowed to depart until he bad responded to the encores and repeated the first verse. Signor Maccaferrl was ono ot the old troupe of Max Strakoscb, and, by his voice and execution, reflects credit upon his famous leader. The singers were all accompanied on the plano by Mr. S. D'Anna, ihe pianist, whose performance was but ? poorly appreciated. This appeared to be mainly due to some fault in the instrument. The entertainment was altogether eheste and refined, and pleasing in every particular. This evening the last concert will be given, and lt is hoped that, as a South Carolinian and singer of merit, Miss McCilloch will be greeted with a crowded-house. The Formea-Habelmann Opera Com? This company will commence their brief j season at the Academy of Music on Monday night, when the ever-charming Marta will be sung, with M'lle Rosetta as Marta, Babelmaun as Lionel, and Formes as Plunket-a strong cast- On Tuesday ll Trovatore will be given, when H. Beaunard will make his first appear? ance. On Wednesday Gounod's delicious opera, Faust, will be prodnoed. We are as? sured that the company have a good orchestra and chorus. TUE FIRES IN TOE CITY. Fin on Gadsden's. Green? A little before eleven o'clock last night a J fire broke out on Gadsden's Green, near'the oaks, among some small one-story wooden shanties, and after destroying several burned Itself out. The engines were brought out soon after the alarm was rung, but owing to the want of water could nat play upon the fire. There being no other buildings contiguous by the exertions of the firemen, and noiwilh standing the high wind, the fire was confined to the shanties, and a few hundred dollars will cover the entire loss. As far as we could iscertain there,was no Insurance. ? A Fire ta Stairs AI lt y. The alarm of fire raised yeeterday af? ternoon, a little after three o'clock, was ?used by the burning of a chimney in Stoli's tiley. The flames were threatening at one im?, but the timely exertions of Captain in ott, and of a few policemen, prevented any serious conflagration. The engines were not jut, and no bells w ere rung. A Biasing Cb I roney. At eight o'clock in the evening another alarm was given, but proved to be merely the burn? ing out of a chimney in George street on .the premiBes owned by Mrs. Bernard. Ihe flames soon burnt out, and -were extinguished with? out the aid of the engines. No bells were rung. BOOKS FOB THE HOUDATS.-Those of our J readers who are seeklog that best of -gifts-an acceptable book-as a Christmas' present for some yoting friend, can nowhere lind a finer stock from which to choose than at Fogarile's Tavorite depository, King street, in the bend. The selection of Imported works at this es? tablishment, as elsewhere announced, is es? pecially worthy of attention. -. ? . . Tax PROTECTION OF EMIGRANTS.-If we are to have emigrants,, arriving at thia port, some efficient arrangements should be made for their protection. Oa the arrival of the Geor? gia, oa Sunday, several sailor boarding-house keepers went down* to the wharf, and Anding the gates closed, as Is usual in private pre? mises, they entered through a side opening and attempted to foroe their way aboard, but were ejected by the mates. Falling in ibis, they halted the passengers from the wharf and succeeded in producing dissatisfaction, and* luring the evening several escaped frc m the steamer. Od Monday, Captaiq Holmes and the chief mates were arrested pa writs issued by Trial Justice Caulfield, on complaint made by one or more of these persons/that they bad been assaulted with deadly weapons an i their lives threatened, Ac. It is needless te say that it ls an attempt on the part of these "runners" to endeavor lo secure, by intimidation, free access to all the steamers arriving here with emigrants, who are to be enticed away and shipped os sailors after their pockets are emptied. We would only re? mark that, at Baltimore, emigrants by the European steamers are 60 thoroughly protect? ed from interference that they pass from tho steamers to th* cara with mt any Que being allowed inside the gates, except the officers of the customhouse and the railroad and steam? ship employees. Professor MailJefert, who has been awarded the contract for removing the two Confede? rate gunboats lying off Marshall's wharf, the Patapsco, lying off Fort Sumter, and three other sunken steamers, arrived in Charleston yesterday, and confidently expects to com? mence operations in a few days. Professor Ma'llefert had charge, it will be remembered, of blasting out the flell Gate Channel, and ac? complished his part of the w..rk very suc? cessfully. His litest achievement is the removal of the Confederate guaboats sunk off Drewry*s Bluff, below Richmond, In forty feet ol water. The engines and other machinery of these vessels were uninjured. The powder In the small magazines was not damaged, and a box of prima chewing tobacco was found to be "as good as new." Professor Malllefert has with him a corps o? expert divers, fully equipped with diving ap? paratus. They ascertain the exact condition of the wrecks which are to be disposed of, and torpedoes and derricks, under their direc? tion, do the rest.
