Four business houses were entered on Monday night. -Poor Prince Alexis was photographed in New York on Monday. He bore it with forti? tude. -Comptroller Connolly, of the New York Ring, having failed to obtain the required bail, spent his Thanksgiving yesterday in Ludlow street Jail. -A boundary dispute between England and Liberia has been referred to a commission ol ave members, the fifth to be named by the United Slates. The President has tendered the position to Hon. B. F. Wade, who. it is said, is not likely to accept, -Chicago is to have a noble gift from across the Atlantic. The Anglo-American Association of London has already laid the foundation for a free library for the city, which lost its libra? ries with its other treasures in the ever-mem? orable great fire. Late letters give gratifying information as to the progress of this generous scheme, which includes in its founders, besides severn Americans, such coted Englishmen as Disraeli, Tom Hughes, iii? Marquis of Loree, Forster, Arnold, Argyll, Carlyle and a host of noblemen who thus prove their nobility. -It is said that ladies who visit the man milliner, Worth, in Paris, for the purpose of buying a dress or costume, are very mnch surprised at his manner of judging what would be most appropriate and becoming to them. We are oot to be deterred, by the sneers of the Colombia Union, from pointing out to the Legislature the advisability of adopting promptly the most practical measures of financial reform. It would disgust The Union, no doubt, to fiad the Legislature resolved to act with prudence and discretion io-every matter that comes before them ; but the wel? fare of the State is more important than the prosperity of a partisan newspaper, although the sheet in question is not expected to think so. The recent appearance of a handsome oc? tavo volume cf five hundred and sixty-eight pages, entitled "The Living Female Writers "of the Eon tb," is an'event worthy a note. The title page modestly says, "Edited by "the author of Southland Writers," wbicb, as every one knows, meaos au accomplished lady of Mobile. The introductory says: "This record of the Living Female Writers ? of the South is intended to embody the "names and works of all those ladies who "have written for publication, and beeB "recognized as 'writers' in the Southern "States;" and it is bat fair to say that this intention baa been well carried oat ia the book. The work is as nearly complete as a work of contemporary biography can be ex? pected to be. The number of sketches is one hundred and eighty one in the twelve Southern States. Of the coast region are Mrs. Mary Palmer Shingler, Mrs. Whitaker, Miss Marian Reeves, (author of "Ingemisco," and other popular, althoagh anonymous, novels,) and Miss Annie M. Barnwell. Of other portloas of the Stale are Mrs. Marga get M. Martin, Mrs. Mary C. Rion, Mrs. Mary Ewart Ripley, Mrs. Catharine Ladd, Miss Clara V. Dargan, (now Mrs. McLean,) Mrs. Floride Clemson, (Mrs. Lea,) Mrs. Louisa MeCord, Mrs. Laura Gwyn, and Mrs. Selina E. Means. Surely the most exacting-even those who thought Mr. Davidson's list, so much too short-will be content with this showing. These sketches have been prepared with care; and much that was cumbrous in "Southland Writers" has been avoided, and scores of inaccuracies and errors ia that work are corrected ia this. 1 he whole ?3 re? cast and makes essentially a new work, al? though covering in general the same ground. At far less expense much more valuable material is presented. It is issued from the press of Claxton, Remeen ? Huffellinger, of Philadelphia, and its general get-up-includ? ing a copious and capitally digested index is highly commendable. . Mrs. Saxon, of Alabama; Mrs. Vance and Miss Poitevent, of Mississippi ; Mrs. Mary E. Bryan, of Florida; Mrs. French and Mrs. Ketchom, of Tennessee; Mrs. Preston, Miss Brock, Mrs. Terhune and Mrs. Jordan, of Virginia; Mrs. Clarke and Miss Frances C. Fisher, (author of "Vale "rie Aylmer,") of North Carolina; Mrs. Crane and Mrs. Southworth, or Maryland, and Miss Mellie E. Moore, or Texas.
