CORRECTION.-The accident which occasion?
ed the injuries to vice-President Cavanangh oc?
curred at Truck house No. 2, Wentworth street,
and not Na 1, on Queen stree*, as stated. Mr.
Cavanangh's condition ls still critical.
CLUBS AND STABS.-The record of yester?
day morning's convictions contained only Ave
simple cases of "drunk and disorderly,'' the dis?
position or which was as follows: Daphne Alex?
ander", five diys' solitary confinement; Julia
Magen, Margaret Jones, Michael Fitzgibbon and
James Fitzgibbon, fined one dollar each.
THE CITT TAXSS.-The public are warned
that only nine days more remain or the extende l
time allowed by the lenity or the City Connell tor
the collection or the last Instalment or the taxes
for 1871, without the addition of the penalty, and
still very many of the taxpayers are In default,
Walk up to the captain's office, gentlemen, and
settle.
r A PUBLIC CONVENIENCE. -Now that the city
ls rapidly filing up, hundreds are every day
haming tor board, rooms, houses and servants,
and hundreds, on the other hand, are eager to
supply those very wants on reasonable terms.
The readiest way for such parties to accom;lish
their wishes ls to make them known through
the columns of a paper like Tax Nxws, which
circulates among every class of the community.
A "want" expressed in THE NEWS seldom falls to
elicit a batch of prompt and more or leis satis?
factory responses.
MASONIC-The Grand Lodge of Free and
Accepted Masons, or the State or South Carolina,
will convene to-day at Odd Fellows' Hall, corner
or King and Liberty streets, and will be opened
by Right Worshipful R. s. Bruns, Deputy Grand
Master. This convocations however, ls hardly
more than a formality, as an adjournment will
be taken, without entering upon the work or the
Grand Lodge, until Tuesday, the 19th of Decem?
ber, when the cornerstone of the new Masonic
Temple, on the corner or King and Wentworth
streets, will be laid with Masonic rites.
THE COUNTT COMMISSIONERS CALLED TO OB
DUL-The planters along Cooper River, in the j :
rice region, are loud in their complaints against
the county commissioners, who have signally
failed to show their hands on any or the roads in i
that section. Reed's causeway, near Strawberry ?
Ferry, ls in a deplorable condition; the bridge at t
Scott's Corner ls gone; Mayrant's bridge ls almost j
impassable, and, m fact, the whole river road and
its tribu tarlta want working. It ls now two j i
yean since they have received attention, and all
persons condemned to travel on them give the j j
county com uissloners a well deserved anathema. | j
VALUABLE CARGOES.-The superior new
fXCfhtlngship Olive s. Southard, captain Theo I *
bald, or 1188 tons, was cleared at the Custom '

land cotton and 315 tons phosphate rock.
TUB LING ARDS opened at th? Academy of 1
Music last evening to a very gool house, consld '
er m g the nc favorable weather, aid Inaugurated a
season that gives every promise of success. The
selection of plays waa admirably calculated to
exhibit to Its best advantage the strength of the
company, and every hit in the performance was
generously received, while the matchless Protean ,
personation of the inimitable Lingard created a ?
genui?e sensation. The company will remain *
for three more nights, dnrtng which an admirable )
selection from the legitimate comic drama ls ]
promised, aa weiijas farther Instalments of Lin- !
gard's original sketches and statue scenes,
PRINTTNO TELEGRAPH INSTRUMENTS.-The
New Tork Gold and Stock Company, or which
General M. LeflertB is president, and which
supplies oar factors and banks with commercial
and financial news from Liverpool and New
York, ls about to introduce printing telegraph In?
struments into this city. Toe ne vs will be dla- 1'
tributed to subscribers simultaneously, from .the 11
main office by one manipulation. Tue invention
is a valuable one, and the instruments work -
most effectively wherever introduced. The Gold c
and Stock Company own all the patents of per- t
feet printing instruments, which print In large
capital letters as plainly as the ordinary printing
press. These machines are now tied by cotton
tact ors In A uga-ta. Ga, and have given entire
satisfaction. Securing promptness and nnlTor- I
ml ty in delivery, they are Invaluable in commer- I
dal and financial operations. Mr. Patrick Walsh,
or Augusta, ls the general agent for the introduc?
tion of this CDmpaiy's Instruments. The agent
fer Charleston ls Mr. J. D. Easterlln, mana?
ger d^t the Western Union Telegraph Company,
to whom applications caa be made.
A GOOD RIDDANCE.-A party of alleged
pickpockets, who are said to have been "work?
ing" the recent state fairs with great success,
h^'e been brought to grier by their arrest In tbls
city on the complaint or - McKinlay, who
charges that Mary A. Riley engaged him in con
v; nation on the Btreet, and tba: while his atten
tion was thus diverted her conrederates, "Dr."
George DeVernon and John Wilson, quietly ab?
stracted his watch and pocketbtok. A descrip?
tion or the alleged pickpockets being furnished to
the detectives, they were arrested and confined
in the Guardhouse uuttl yesterday morning,
when, the complilnant failing to appear against
them, they were suffered :o depa-t upon their
promise to leave the State. One very damaging
point against them was that upon being arrested
they made an o*r to Lieutenant Heidt or three
hundred dollars to allow them to escape.
DEPARTURE OF THE FIREMEN.-The mem
ben or th? varions steam dre engine and hook
and ladder companies were ordered to report at
the Charlest?n Hotel at half pas: 5 yesterday
morning to escort the Delaware firemen to the
depot npon their ratura to tbe North. A good
number of the Charleston firemen turned ont ac?
cordingly, and a procession was formed which,
headed by McClarg'a Band, started np Meeting
street toward the Northeastern Railroad depot.
Here a - arewell address was delivered by Vice
President Thaddeus Street, or the Vigilant Com?
pany, which was responded to in a rew appro?
priate words by Marshal Qilnn. Brier remarks
were also made by Chler Bngineer Nathan, Mr.
Hazell of the Delaware company, and Professor
Ben McClurg. The visit?n then embarked on
the train, which moved out of the d ?pot amid the
?Mteag or the firemen and the stirring strains
