ceived by Chler Nathan states that the washing
ington Fire Company left wilmington, Delaware,
at io o'clock yesterday morning, and they are
now en route tor this city. The company ls forty
six strong, wjjh a band of seventeen pieces,
making sixty-three persons ta all. Our firemen
are fully prepared, and delegations will meet the
vlsi'ors to morrow morning at Ten-mile HllL on
the Northeastern Railroad, to make them ready
for their reception.

water.

tion were suspended yesterday.
THE OPENING- AT THE ACADEMY.-The long
interval which has elapsed since the closing or
the Academy of M?sle, has prepared the levers or
the drama to look forward to the opening on
Monday night as one of the events of the season.
They are not to be disappoints!. The Llngards

thelr talents, and Naval Engagements, their
opening piece, promises to bea rich treat. Mr.
Lingard ts styled by the New York Herald "the
King of Mimics," and he bas Tally established his
reputation as one of tue.most versatile artists on
the stage. Miss Alice Denning, in comedy, is
Irre?fnible, and her queenly beauty, combined
with undoubted talent, bespeak a wonderful suc?
cess in a city where both or these qualities are so
quickly and enthusiastically appreciated. The
engagement lasts bat io ar evenings, and another
oppy tunity will hardly be afforded the public or
witnessing the performance of this celebrated
company in Charlestin. Reserved seats can be
procured at the Academy on Friday.
CAPTURING A POLICEMAN'S CLUB.-Between
eleven and twelve o'clock on Tuesday night, as a
sleepy looking Clubs and Stars was pr ^menading
that quiet locality known as Elliott street, Ms a t
tention was attraeteu to a certain house whence
hideous noises proceeded. Soon after Thomas
Wilson and Harry Orr, t w J sailors, considerably
the worse for liquor, came oat, and, upon their
making more noise than was necessary, Clubs
and Stars advised them to go home. The advice
was sufficiently irritating to m ike the twj men,
La their quarrelsome mood, perfectly reckless,
and, regardleia of the revolver borne by the man
in blue, they assaulted him and took away his
club. Satisfied with this v.ctory they le: their
prisoner go, who went to the Guardhouse and
speedily returned with reinforcements. A lively
skirmish ensued, which resulted in the capture of
tb?Awo sailors and the retaking of the club. The
prisoners were brought before the Mayor La the
morning and fined five dollars each. This they
refused topsy, although they had plenty ol money,
and were forthwith dispatched to the House of
Correction for ten days each.
MR. J. A. ALPERS MISSING.-This gentleman,
who is the United States deputy collector or in
ternal revenue at this place, and secretary of ri e
German Rifle Club, d.sappeared oaSatardiy af?
ternoon, and the strictest search on the part or
his friends and relatives has taus far failed
to establish his whereabouts. Mr. Alpers left
his house in Wentworth street, on Saturday
afternoon, about five o'clock, telling his
wife that he was going over to SulUvau'd Island.
He walke 1 off. carr, lng his overcoat, a small
satchel and his revolver with a IJW cartridges.
He was last seen walking down Market street,
opposite State, being then in ample time to catch
the Island boat leaving at half-past five. From
thia point he hos disappeared. Inquiries at the
Iv ferr" boat established the rac: that he did not go
Waboard of the boat, and did no: reach Sullivan's
f Island by any other means, as is proved by the
evidence or hts friends OB the-Isl md, w.iom he
was about to visit and with whom he lias often
stayed. Mr. Alpers'a affslrs are said- to be

Alpers had on gray tweed pants with Mack stripe,
a black sack coat, and. a black reit hat. Hla dis?
appearance is one of the most mysterious on

the opinion given by onr prominent physic ans

of the past few mouths, who have been watching
with anxious eyes from their place of refuge the
coquettish advances of JacK Frost. Additional
passenger coaches are required on the South
Carolina and Northeastern Roads, and the in?
flux is assuming the proporions of ?he Hegira In

the number of arrivals at the hotels. Travellers
from the North have a weakness for Charleston,
and among ihc list of arrival* are many mer?
chants from the interior of the State, whose wel?
come presence is calculated to create some ex?
crement in the business streets. In fact, the fall
trade has begun ia earnest, and large 1 ouses on
Ha'ne and Meeting streets are increasingly
busy.
Moribund Teltow Jack received a coup de-grace
on Tuesday night, and the steady weather of
yesterday buried him beyond hope of resurrec?
tion- The sharp wind from the northwest brougU
the thermometer down with a rush, yu- between
eight o'clock Wednesday r.?g?t and the same hour
yesterday morning the quicksilver fell to 36 de?
grees, the lowest point of the season. This ls the
minimum temperature registered at the City Hos?
pital, but reports from other parts of the city
make the point still lower, and one or two Instan?
ces are mentioned where ice was formed in t..e
upper portion of the c:ty. Yesterday the ther?
mometer on B/oad street pointed to 4T at 8 A. M.
and to 65 at 2 P. M., and then fell steadily. At 6
P. M. it stood at 60, and at ll P. M. at 47 degrees,
with indications of a further decline during the
night.
AMONG THE OFFICHLS.
The "In*" and the "Outs"-Movements
of the Elect.
The anxious crowd which assembled at an
early hour 3 est er day morning, in the vicinity
of the City Hall, was an evidence of the
interest taken in the dlstribuion of the
various posts In the municipal endowment,
and reminded one of gatherings on election
day. There were a large number of applicant?,
each having his eye upon a particular* office
and discussing among themselves the chan!
ces of success. Wistful glances were cast In the
direction of the 0 lardhouse, and the two city
inspectors found the r friends increasing, and a
few minutes of thew conversation proportlonably
valuable.
About ten o'clock the officers elected at the
meeting of Council on the previous day began to
make their appearance, and file the bonds re?
quired of them before entering upon the duties of
their office. Moat of them have already compiled
with the law, and have given bonds, with good

At HM. Captain Hendricks was prepared to de?

entered the Guardhouse, where possession was
formally surrendered by Captain Hendiieks.
Assistant Colar Chapman ls, for the present, re?
tained at the lower Guardhonse, and Assistant
etiler Fraser.has entered upon his duties, and ls
new in charge or the upper Guardhouse. The
proceedings ?ere qule: and simple, and every?
thing went on as If the 0 leers were only reliev?
ing each other on guard.
The Defective-office experienced- a decided
change. The office waa duly swept and garnish
ed, and Lieutenant Heidt at once took charge
*i:h the following detectives, who were appoint?
ed yesterday morning by the Mayor: Privates
Francis Nipson, John F. Yanderlippe, F. Backus,
samuel Dlokenoi and Henry May. Lieutenant
Philippi and his force vacated without demur,
and were soon mingling with the crowd, discuss?
ing matters in general with all the liberty allowed
to citizens of this Great and Glorious, Ac. The
new detectives are strongly recommended, and
with their energetic and experienced lieutenant
cannot fail to be most efficient in preserving order
and repressing the depredators with whom the
city has been blessed.
The new officers were busy In receiving the in?
ventories of the city property pertaining toi heir
offices, during the day, but will soon get to work.
The changes were generally effected gracefully,
and no fractiousness marred the harmony of the
day.
BADLY SHOT.-We learn lrom the Marion
Startbat on last Wednesday night Mr. Cade
Thomas was shot by Mr. Rhett Moody. The oe
enrrenoe took place at the latter's store, about
six miles north or Marlon Town. An altercation
sprang np, and during its continuance Mr. Moody
discharged the contents of a shot gun into Mr.
Thomas's ?alt breast. The wound s very serious,
but the wounded man may recover.
THE COLUMBIA GAS GENERATOR.-The Co?

power of a number of gas machmeB was tested
by one of the profesora in Colombia College, New
Yo* k. The gas was introduced tbrongh four hun?
dred and flfty feet piping Into a chemical room.
The illuminating power or one was equal to six?
teen candles; that or another to eighteen candles;
that ot another to twenty two candles; whilst
that or the Columbia ga* was equal to twenty
seven candles. The names of Richard A Pli mer,
the inventors of the Columbia machine, det^rve to -
shine bright.
