Conn of General Sessions.
PAYING OLD DEBTS.-From the first of No?

a 'es:ive spirit, whos9 potations had been deep
and long, was arrested by the police lor belog

the corner of Sute and Market stree's. After re?
maining in the Guardhouse about thirty minutes,
the prisoner put up a margin of fire doll irs for his
appearance, ant) was released. Lattr In the
afternoon, another disturbance, at the corner of
State and Chalmers streets, called for the inter?
ference, or Clubs and Stars, and the same inebri?
ate was discovered laying about him and resist?
ing any arrest. Clubs and Stars were too strong,
and the individua! once more round hlmseu* m
the lock up. He was brought before the Mayor
yesterday m ming, and on the first charge was
sentenced to pay a line of two dollars, which he
did. Lower down the page, the Mayor round the
second charge against the prisoner, and the lat?
ter tried to get off by pleading "the same old
drunk." This would not do, however, and he
was sentenced to pay a fine or three dollars

TUE HEALTH OF THE CITY.
The cool change in the weather seems to
haye worked ita worst upon those down with the
fever, and yesterday but two certificates of death
from yellow fever were received, of these, the
one dated on the 31 wa* a colored woman.
The other death took place on the 5th. The
bright, cool weather we are now having gives
every promise that a rapid abatement in the
fever will now be noi lceable. The following is
MONDAY'S Ri TORT:
OFFICE OF BOARD OF HEALTH, 1
CHARLESTON. November 6-12 M. )
Two certificates or death from yei ow fever re?
ceived since last report.
Kt'BEKT LEBBT. M. D..

Besides the above, the fellowing ctrtiC.ates
have been received since last report:
Two for congestion or the brain, dated Novem?
ber 4; one ror injury from rall, dated November 4;
one ror old age, dated November 4; one ror phthi?
sis pulmonalis, dated November 4; one ror tris
mus nascentium, dated November 4; one for
phthisis pulmonalis, dated November 5, and one
stlll-blrth. dated November 4. ,
The calm, clear cold of Sunday night was an
earnest of the approaching winter, and without
the aid of cold winds >he thermometer fan fe
rapidly and couched 47, the minimum point reach
ed this fall. During the day a NEWS reporter met
with a gentleman .'rom Mount Pleasant, who stat?
ed that there had been frost there-very light at
the village, but thick and heavy as lt advanced
into the country. The welcome visitor was seeD
by the gentleman himself, and lhere can be no
doubt about the matter.
On Sunday, the British bark Lucy, eleven days
frcm Havana, arrived In the barbar, with the
body or Captain wuiiams. who died during the
passage, or yellow rever. Instead or receiving a
seaman's burial, the remains had bt :n boxed up
and directed to Cap alu card, o? this city, marked
chloride oflime. The corn a was taken from i he
quarantine ground up to Fort Johnson, where it
was Interred at 12 M. yesterday, in the United
Stales burying ground, in the neighborhood of the
fort The corpse was quite black, death having
taken place on Tuesday last, and exhibited c>ery
symptom of vlru'ent yellow fever.
FOR CHARLESTON.-We beg to call the at
tenii n of shippers to the advertisement or
Messrs William noach 4 Co., who are loading the
fine steamship Fall River at New Toik for
Charleston, to leave Saturday next. Freight on
measurement goods, ten cents; barrel, fifty cents.
BASE BALL.-At a meeting of the Green
Stocking B. B. C., held on Satuiday, the 4th in?
stant, the following officers were elected to serve
for the ensuing 5 ear: E. Samson, president; G.
Jefferson, secretary; H. Winter, treasurer; EToye
and G. Caser, finance committee; E. Roark, com?
mittee ou letters.
BEHIND TIME.-The business men sojourn?
ing on the Long Branch or south Carolina were
considerably chagrined yesterday morning by the
detention or the ferry boat at Sullivan's Island.
The delay was owing to some disarrangement of
the steam giuge, by wtich the steam escaped,
and the boat could not be got under way until
damages were repaired. The matter was arranged
on the spot, however, and the boat resched the
city about ten o'clock, instead of between eight
and nine A. M.
THE SAVANNAH YELLOW FEVER.-A telegram
was received here yesterday by Dr. Lebby, from
Dr. J. C. Habersham, the health officer of Savan?
nah, which contradicts the statement as to the
continued presence of yellow fever In that city.
Dr. Habersham admits that there were A few cases
there between the 15th and 3lst or October, but
does not mention tbe number. Savannah must
either have been vUlted v. nh a heavy Lost on the
sly, or their yellow fevr is.or a most obliging type,
and disappears in tim? not to injnre tbe Tall trade
or tbe city.
THE MEDICAL COLLEGS.-The faculty, as
will be observed by their advertisement in an?
other column, have concluded to postpone the
opening exercises o' 'he Medic*) College, In this
cuy, till the 15th instant. This, we think, a wise
step, as, from all appearances, the sanitary con?
dition or the city will warrant str?ngen n come
to Chai leston by that time without the slightest
hesitation; and it will be much better to let all,
students from the city and from abroad, have a
fair star: and commence together. We do not
know what the prospects ror a class are this win?
ter, but from the brilliant reputarlo n of this col"
lege In the past, and from the affection so many
of Its alumni cherish for it. we doubt not the
tulls will soon again be well filled.
ST*P IN AND BEE.-Broad street would be
but a business desert were it nat for the opportu?
nities offered hue and there for the wayfarer to
stop In and take something. November 1? gener
ally conceded to be the month wheu th:? prac
tl e ls reduced to perre? i m. and the caurers to
the public taste then use every effort to
please the eye and tickle tbe palate. 'The open?
ing of this festive scasan was inaugurated at Mr.
N. Ferenbach's Broad street saloon yesterday, by
a tempting array or edible?, furnishing a host or
visitors with Buch rations as the gods might
choose. An abundance orcholc3 spirits andan
endless variety rf pleasing concoctions were suit?
able adjuncts to a spread that can be found at the
same time and aame place for many months to
come. v
FIRE! MURDER!-About seven o'clock last
evening the community In Glebe street, near
George, were alarmed by the above cries proceed?
ing from the servants' quarters on the premises
of Mrs. Balley. The police and several outsiders
rs to the rescue, and round a colored woman
nw jed Maria Johnsen with a rope and lash, with
which she was about to tie up and chastise her
unruly daughter n^med Lizzie. The latter had
been sent out du-ing the day to look ror work,
and instead or doing this, as the old woman said,
she went "ticking up her heels on the Battery.''
The parties were taken to the Guardhouse, where
Lizzie was locked up lor an Interview wi: h the
Mayor 1 his morning. The outcries have not been
the flrst heard In ihe same neighborhood, and ror
several nights the surrounding residents have
been tieattd to a serenade of the long and strong
description.
THE HOTEL FRAUD-"A NICE YOUNGMAN FOR
A SMALL PARTY."-A few days ago a young man,
well dressed and or gentlemanly exterior, came
to Charleston rrom Ballimore and registered his
name at the Charlestun Hotel a- Geo. Woods,
from that city. The engaging manners of the
visitor bespoke the good-will of ru ne host, and
he received every attention. His generous nature
ran over In dinners and parties, leading to an
extensive bill, which was presented yesterday
morning for part settlement at least. Woods,
just then, had no money about him. but would go
down to the bank and draw some with which to
make matters all right. He ?eft the hotel, and
ample time having expired for any .ame, blind
stranger to have found his way to any bank In
the city and back, the hotel-keeper began to cus?
ped something, and calling to mind various
suspicious circumstances attending the visit of ?
Woods, such as the total absence or bag?
gage, a detective waa sent for and privately
engaged "on business." That functionary, I
having a decidedly poor opinion of human na.
ture, did not go to the bank, but recollecting that
a train would leave the city In a short
time, hastened to the depot and looked around.
Woods was found on board, not sitting In the (
open car, but ia a place where he evidently wish- 1
ed to avoid being seen. He waa brought back j
and lodged In the Guardhouse ror examination, j
While there he attempted to make way with a 1
bundle of papers, which were captured, and 1
afforded abundant prc of that the prisoner ts a
fast boy, who has seen the world. He has several 1
aliases, and ls generally known by the name or I
Hears m an. His game here was well-played, and
cane very near being successful.
