Howard Association.
The regular weekly meeting of the executive
committee of the Howard Association was bell
yesterday at the Market Hall, President James H.
. Taylor in the chair.
The bills of D. A. Amme for $10 and of the Cou?
rier Office for $8715 were ordered to be paid.
The letters of application for membership from
Messrs. william Boa ch and William Hntson Lee
were read, and the rules having been suspended,
the applicants were immediately elected.
The following contributions have been received:

the body or John S. Lachmond, the barkeep?
er of Mr. Badenhop'e saloon, at the southwest
corner or King and Market streets, who was
found dead in his bed early lo the morning. The

THE SAILOR Bow.-The examination of the
sailor, Walter Snowball, arrested for an assault
and batu ry upon Antonio Swlndsen, on board of
the schooner Lilly, lying a- Adger's wharf, on
Thursday afternoon, took place yesterday after?
noon before Tr lal Justice Levy. Tne prisoner was
found rainy and sentenced to pay a fine of two
dollar and costs, walch he did wlthoat walting
for the alternative resoit to Sheriff Mackey's
hotel.

The crowd of loafing politicians, who, at all
hours of the day, may be found Idling away their
time at the intersection of Meeting and Broad
streets, were thrown Into an unusual flutter yes?
terday by an exchange of shots between Trial
Justice Thomas Jefferson Mackey and Mr. W. J,
Whaley, of the city staff of THE NEWS.
In THE NEW3 or Thursday was printed a report
or the doings of the Badlcal caucus on the pre?
ceding evening. Mackey, who is notoriously
averse to coming before the public, occupied a
prominent place In the picture, and, in the course
of Thursday morning, made an attack upon Mr.
W. J. Whaley, who repelled the onslaught with his
umbrella. In THE NEWS of jesterday the rencon?
tre was described In lively style, which led to
what might have proved a very serious business.
The facts or the fracas as ascertained from a num?
ber of eyewitnesses, were as follows :
At a quarter to eleven o'clock yesterday
morning, Mr. Whaley; accompanied by a
friend, whom he had casually met, waa walking
along the north bide of Broad street to the City
Tia 1 corner. At this point he changed his direc?
tion, and walked diagonally along Meeting
street towards the Guardhouse, where he was
about to make his usual morning visit. Upon
the corner by the Guard bouse stood Mackey, who
was in company with a colored constable, when
Mr. Whaley was about hair-way between
the City Ball and the Guard cruse. Maokey
turned and banded to his companion the club
walklng-sttck which he usually carries. Ile then
drew a large army revolver?'d fired deliberately
at Mr. Whaley, Just as that gentleman Lad
reached the middle or tho crossing. Mr. Whaley
drew hts pistoL and, when Maokey fired, halted
and returned the Ure. Alternate shots were
exchanged at a distance of about eighteen paces,
until the Ave loads In Mr. Whaiey's pistol
(a smalt four-and-a hair Inch Colt's revolver) were
exhauste', when he raised aloft his empty
weipon In thc air. Mackey then advanced au 1
heldlng his p stol In both hands, fired a sixth shot
Mr. Whaley, unarmed cs hs then was, stood
his ground without niching, facing his en
raged assal'ant, who now drew a second re?
volver, while pouring forth a torrent of abuse.
At this point the police Interfered, and both
parties were taken to the Guardhouse,
where they each gave bonds In the sum of one
thousand dollars to keep the peace, ad were dis
charged. Mackey, it - ill be noticed, was the ag
? gressor. He tired the first shot and the last shot,
six shots In all; while Mr. Whaley fired but five
times. All the eye-witnesses concur In saying
that Mr. Whaley behaved throughout the affair
with a conspicuous coolness In marked contrast
With the conduct of his doubly armed assailant.
The encounter was the subject of general talk
lr the community yesterday. At half past Ave
o' jlock In the afternoon Trial Justice T. J. Mackey
was escorted to the island boat by a squad of
policemen and colored constables, thirteen in
number, among whom were Captain Hendricks,
Detective H-.rnandez and Deputy Coroner Kos
berry.
FIRE AT ORANGEBDRG.-We regret to learn
that the residence or Mr. W. J. DeTrevllle, at
Orangeburg, with a considerable amount of fam 1
ture and clothing, was destroyed by tire, about
one o'clock yesterday morning.
COMMUNICATION WITH SAVANNAH_We are
requested to call attention to the fact that the
quarantine bas been entirely removed by the city
authorities cf Savannah. The hair-past 8 A. M.
train on the Savannah and Charleston Ball road
will now ran on Sundays as on other days, and
without any restrictions whatever.
