A FAIR FIGHT.-A disturbance occurred on
Wednesday nlghf, at the fair now bein? held in
Nathan'B Hall, Wentworth street, caused by a
quarrel between two colored men. named Wm.
Hicks and Lawrence Wilson. The dispute arose
from the jealousy or one or the parties, and the
twain were soon at work upon each other with
their fists. The alarm occasioned was heard by
the police, who quickly appeared upon the scene
of action and arrested the two combatants. They
were taken to the Guardhouse, and having been
brought before the Mayor, yesterday morning,
were seatenced each io pay a floe or five dollars

SKIRMISH ON THE MALL.-Four white boys
were brought be.'ore|Trlal Justice T. J. Ma' key,

The evidence showed that the two parties, num?

different merchants and obtalnel a dray load cr
plunder.
A Rusu OF BUSINESS -The cold spell of the
past two days has Infused a new life In some
quarters ilia'ls truly refreshing to behold. Thc
neighborhood or ihe Ch lon wharves and the ad?
jacent cotton pre ses presents an animated
spectacle at all hours cf the day. Drays crowd
each other, and the Garrow street ls blocked by
the arriving and departing loads of cotton. East
Bay, at this Beetloo, Is quite narrow, and two
dead locks occurred yesterday, the gang-way be?
ing cleared only alter some trouble, and an extra?
ordinary use of expletives. The large wholesale
Btores on the busnesB portion or the Bay are
tnrnlng oat boxes and barrels Innumerable, and
showing ev( ry sign of activity. The shipment or
these ps ck ages to the vari?os railroads aod
steamboats ls done mainly by the uncouth clat?
tering dray, but the music made, though not
<*^?eratlc. has the same charms to soothe, and
donbtles-" gladdens many mercantile breasts.
We trust that the "good old times" are about to
dawn agata m Charleston.

DEATH OF DR. B. A. RODRIGUES.-At a late
hoar on Wednesday night, Ur. B. A. Rodrigues
was prostrated by a stroke or apoplexy at his re?
sidence, in sleeting street, opposite the Circular j
Church, the attack terminating fatally at five |
o'clock yesterday afternoon. Dr. Rodrigues was
born in this city In 1815, and at an early age en?
tered the office tr Dr. Henry Frost,,where hebe
gan the study or medicine, LD l was enabled, with
the aid of the venerable doctor, to take the lec?
tures and graduate a; the Charleston Medical col?
lege. He determined ts devote his ure to the
branch of dentistry, and became a pnpil of the
celebrated Dr. Brewster, who afterwards remov?
ed to Europe, and died recently at Versailles. For
the past thirty-five years Dr. Rodrigues has been
a practicing dentist in this city, where he soon
established a high reputation ror ski 1 and uni?
form success. A short time before the late war
he was elected vice-president of the United states
Dental Association. The same earnest determi?
nation which characterized him In the study or
medicine and dentistry was maintained In bia
subsequent practice, and at length placed this
self-made mai at the head of his profession in
this state.
His funeral will take place this afternoon, at 3
o'clock, from Bis late residence In Meeting street.
A FEMALE SHOI-LIKTEK AT WOBE.-Yester?
day morning, a whi?e woman or respectable ap?
pearance, Sarah Daley by name, entered the store
of Messrs. btoae-A MarshaU, No. 143 Meeting street,
and called for some calico. She stood by the cone ter
for some time, apparently examining the cloth
while the clerk was attending to some customers
at the back part of the store, and presently went
oat or the door. A small colored girl, who was
selling peanuts lu front ortho store, seemed to
have been watching her, ror soon after the woman
left, th? girl went in to the clerk and told him the
woman had been stealing clo h. The clerk went
to the counter, and Immediately missing the roll
of calico, hurried out In pursuit, but the woman
was not to be Been up or down the street. He
passed her by In his hurry, for Bhe had merely
gone a rew ste p3 down the street and then tam?
ed aside In a gateway to conceal her prize. This
dfflcnlty, apparently unsurmountable, was e slly
accomp.lshed by one or those manoeuvres Im?
possible to thieves of the male kiad by reason of
the nature or their habiliments. A few mysteri?
ous jerks and twitched and rustle as or falling
leaves, and the woman made her appearance with
the tell-tale calico securely hidden. The clerk cf a
neighboring store hau observed the dodge, and
slopped the woman with h r bnndle. Her con?
fusion told all, and the clerk escorted ber back to
the store whence she had originally made her
exit with the calico. Here the loser examined
the bundle, and utt?ring an emphatic exclama?
tion at the nature of the enveloping garment,
shook oat the stolen calico. The dejected shop?
lifter was turned over to a poll teman, and will
make her appearance this morning before the
Mayor. This a'tack or kleptomania seems the
first with which she has been afflicted, and her
entreaties to be allowed to go were pitiable.
