TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. -The Columbia Phoenix announces the Instant deatb, on Monday after? noon, of Mr. Joseph Brennen (a son of Mrs. Mary A. Brennen,) of Columbia, from a gun? shot wound. It appears that, In company with Mr. Harry Levy, young Brennen was on a bunting expedition, in a buggy, and when near Trenbolm's Grove, a wheel of tbe vehicle struck a stump, causing one of the guns to ex? plode, lodging the contents !n the neck of the unfortunate youth, who died lnr^mtly. PROMPT PA-?XINTS.-The stock ol Blssell's hardware establishment, lately destroyed by fire, was Insured for 2*teen thousand dollars In the Georgia Home Insurance Company, ot Columbus, Georgia. Tbe loss having been ad? justed at between eleven and twelve thousand dollars, became due yesterday, and was paid up in full by Major Hutaon Lee, the agent. The losses by Nach m an'a stock were paid promptly after the Ore by the same - company. These quick payments have confirmed the ih opinion heretofore entertained ol the rgla company. T?E INSURANCE PANIC-The immense loss of property In the great lire at Chicago will prove a heavy blow to the numerous Insurance companies which did business in that thriving and popular city. Thus tbe effect of the Dre is lelt directly throughout the United States, and the question arr to which companies bad suffer? ed fliest, and the extent of their losses, were the principal topics of interest on the street yesterday. Many of the companies have not been heard lrom by their agents in this city, but we give below the substance of the news that has so lar been received by telegraph: The Georgia Home Insurance Company, of | Columbus, Ga., escapes loss, never having opened an agency In Chicago. Tbe Citizens' Insurance Company, ol New York, says IIB losses by-tce ?re will not exceed $25,000. The North British and Mercantile Insurance Com? pany states that its losses in Chicago are less than lbs fire surplus, and will not affect the insurance capital of the company. The Un? derwriters' Agency. has acted promptly. As soon as the fire was over a meeting of the Germania, Hanover, Niagara and Republic In? surance Companies, composing the Agency, waa held and steps were taken to pay immedi? ately upon adjustment the losses incurred at Chicago. After paying these there will re? main a surplus ol more than $500,000, leav? ing the gross assets of the Agency $2,500,000. The Home Insurance Company, of New York, assures its agent that the Home policies are still good. Messrs. William B. Heriot & Co. THE MURDER AX OAKLEY. One of the murderers Arrested-Confes? sion of the Negro-How the Deed wu Done* The cold-blooded murder ol Mr. W. B. W. Fidea, the depot agent of the Northeastern Railroad, at Oakley, about twenty-seven miles Irom the city, last Saturday night, has already been mentioned, but several parties being sus? pected it was not deemed advisable to lay the details and suspicions before the public until the parties Implicated should have been arrest? ed. All day Sunday aud Monday a strict search was maintained 'ir the murderer?, as their tracks indicate' that more than one were engaged In the diabolical deed. Monday night, as the up train from Charleston on the Northeastern Railroad ar? rived at Oakley, several white men entered the cars and arrested a colored man about nine? teen years of age, who said he had got on at Charleston. The arrest was made merely on suspicion, but the nervous and frightened de? meanor of the negro convinced hi? captors thar they had struck the right man. He was taken Into the depot and tied securely. After spending some time in durance vile, the cap? tive seemed to get queasy, and having been questioned by on? o? the white men he made the iollowing disclosures: That he and two other colored men had conspired together and killed Fidea for the money which they knew he had in the store and for his goods. They had picked out Saturday night as the one for the deed because they expected Fidea to do a big business on that day and have more money in the store. Having settled this matter, they had watched the store all Saturday and that night until the ' last of the customers had left. The three then went toward the store, and he staying outside at the door to keep watch, the other two vil? lains entered. From what he could learn sub? sequently they approached the counter as if to purchase, and asked for some cloth which was on the upper shelf. Fidea turned bis back and started to reach down the cloth. While he was doing this one of the ruffians struck him a heavy blow on the back ol his neck with a sharp short sword or very heavy knife, and as he fell back they beat him on the head with their bludgeons until be was senseles?. They then went to the trunk and took out all of the money, about eight hun? dred dol?an lc all. After taking what goods they wanted, the three then bolted the front door, and, going out at the back, made off into the woods. On Monday they took the train from' this city, and the prisoner was arrested. The two other .murderers were also on the train,* but had not been arrested. This startling disclosure was made alter the train left, and the two ruffians must have gone quietly on while the lesser villain waa arrested and detained. The story of the prisoner and his Implication In the crime ls further confirm? ed by his having in his possession a pillow case belonging to the murdered man, and filled with small articles from bia store. Sunday morning, a colored servant of Mr. Fidea knocked at the front door of bia store bring him his break last, bot could not make rael? heard. After repeated attempts she went off, and meeting two gentlemen told them of the matter. They found the front door locked, and, not being able to force it, went to the back door which they found open and through which they entered. They found the body of the murdered man behind the counter, lying on his back across a barrel, ap? parently lo the position in which he had fallen. His head was crushed in on the top ol the skull, and his neck was almost severed by a fearful gash on the back of lt. All the money was taken from his trunk, besides two vests and several small articles from the store. The unfortunate man was living alone in the depot where he also kept a store. His family had all come down to Charles? ton for the summer, Oakley being con? sidered unhealthy. There was no one else in the store at the time. The deed was done In a quiet and complete manner, which ls ter? rible to think of, and not the slightest alarm was -given. Mr. Harvey, who stays about I twenty-five yards from the depot, heard noth? ing unusual, and suspected nothing wrong un? til next morning. An inquest was held over the dead body on Monday, but the evidence served only to establish the fact and causes of his murder without throwing any light on the question of who the guilty parties were. It was merely lound that the man had come to his death by wounds Inflicted by some un? known persons. In the afternoon of the same day the body of Mr. Fidea was Interred at the graveyard ol Biggin's Church. The detectives were expected at Oakley yesterday on the train, but none came. The colored prisoner was brought down on the train yesterday, and lodged in the Detective office, charged with murder. His name Is Anthony Thompson. Anthony ls a young negro, about five feet five Inches high, with dull, heavy features, and speaks in a hesitating, drawling style. He ia by no means blight, and ls marked In a pecu? liar manner. On each hand he has five fingers and a thumb, and his feet are both iurnlsbed with an extra toe. In dividing the spoils, which they did at a short distance below Mount Holly Sunday morning, the two principal ruf? fians gave Anthony a good large roll of rooney, amounting to about $100, for his share in the work. The trio then took the cars to Charles? ton, and after spending Sunday night here, took the train on Monday, when Anthony was arrested at Oakley as above stated. The names ol the two murderers now at large are Ran Bolden and Sam Hoyt. On the night ct the murder, Sam entered the store with a short heavy sword, and Ran was armed with a blud? geon. A description of the murderers has been sent on, and every means taken io effect their early capture. THE ORAXGEBDRQ COURT-Judge Graham is holding court in Orangeburg, and ls polishing off the sessions' business in handsome style. ABUSES AT CASTUS GARD KN.-The New York Herald cites the experience of Mr. EeenBt Jerna, a German gentleman, who plants near thia city, as an evidence of the way In which passengers are treated at Castle Garden. Mr. Beensijerna, who had Just arrived from Eu? rope, begged to be allowed to wheel out his own Ing?age. but was told be must employ nome pet expressman at double prices. As he refused, he was insolently abused, and not until he bad made bitter complaint to the superintendent was any assistance given him. Mr. Reenstjerna got away at last, and came down to Charleston in the Manhattan. SUDDEN DEATH or A WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN. The many friends ol Mr. Henry Clark will be pain-; to learn of his Budden death from apoplexy, which occurred last evening. Mr. Clark was one o? our oldest and mo9t esteem? ed citizens, having nearly completed the age of three score and ten. A native of Charles? ton, he commenced life as an apprentice In the Reynolds coach establishment, but subse? quently formed a partnership with Mr. Stein meyer, In conducting a planing mill. In later years he was engaged In the same busi? ness on bis own account, but since the war has retired from active pursuits. He was at one time president ol the Pioneer Axe Com? pany, and was a member ef the Fellowship, Mechanic, and other societies. His long life was one of uselul exertion and consistent up? rightness. The funeral will take place from his late residence, at half-past three o'clock ihis afternoon. ' CL?B3 AND STARS.-The Major's docket yes? terday morning presented a most uninterest? ing blank. Not a single case of any kind was to be tried, and the Mayor was relieved from his usual judicial investigations.
