CLUBS AND STARS.-Frank Frazer, reported for runniag his cart without a license, had his horse and cart lodged in the Guardhouse, and was ordered by the Mayor to take out a license and pay the expenses ot his team in the Guard? house. Catharine Hoffman, lodged for raising a dis? turbance in Beaufain street and vagrancy, was sentenced to pay a flue ot five dollars or epend ten days in the House of Correction. AT AUCTION'.-The sheriff's sale ol thirty seven shares ot Northeastern Railroad stock, which was to have taken place yesterday morniDg, has been indefinitely postponed, no purchasers having been present at the hour appointed. The right to the manure of the Mills House stables for the year ending October 1st, 1872, was Bold yesterday morning by Robert S. Pringle fer $225. THROUGH BILLS FOR EUROPE.-The splendid steamship Maryland will sall for Baltimore Saturday afternoon, at 4 o'clock, from Union wharves, No. 2. They were duly brought before the Mayor on the charge ot vagrancy and gambling, and were sent to the House of j, Correction for five days each. ANOTHER IRON STEAMSHIP FOR THE PHILA? DELPHIA LINE.-The iron screw steamship j Gulf Stream, Captain McCreery, arrived at a very early hour on Monday, in sixty hours from Philadelphia, showing first-rate speed. She ls one hundred and sixty-five feet lotig, -bjvry-two feet beam and nineteen feet deep, ^and will load fourteen hundred bales of com .JPFpressed cotton. The Gulf Stream brought down a full cargo, and appears to be admira* bly adapted to this trade, being of only twelve feet droit of water with a full load. She ls built of Iron, and ls a first-class freight ship, and has also accommodation for some passen? gers In a spacious and well appointed cabin aft. The Virginia and the Guli Stream will sail [j;om Philadelphia and Charleston once a week, and the character of these eteamerb lor dispatch and large capacity ls a guarantee of a good business the coming season. By this line through bills of ladine are issued to Boston and Providence, as well as to the Northwest? ern cities. SMASHUP ON BROAD STREET.-Yesterday morning a horse harnessed to a buggy, the property of Coroner Taft, took (right while standing at the south door of the Courthouse and dashed down Broad street.* Notwith? standing several attempts to stop him, the an? imal continued his course, more frightened still by the shouts and demonstrations ot the people on the sidewalk. When opposite Friend street he slipped and fell, the buggy running over him and falling upside down on the other side. The cool weather keeps lt from spread? ing, and the few cases now under treatment are mild and manageable. During the twen? ty-four hours ending at noon yesterday the city registrar received only one certificate of death from yellow fever, viz;'that of a white woman, a native of Germany, and twenty-two years old, wb * died on Saturday. One for trlsmus nascentium, dated Septem? ber 30. FORGERY OF A SCBOOL CBECK. A Cool Rogue-Taken in the Act. A few days ago Miss Ann Huger, one of the teachers In the county schools at Hill Hall, School District No. 7, received a certificate from Mr. E. M. Grimke thatshe was entitled to one month's pay as teacher from the 1st of September to the 1st of October. GetllDg sev? eral blank school checks from Mr. Grlrake she carried them home and left them on her table while attending to some business. She after? wards went to Mr. Poppentieim, the chairman of the county board, and upon the certificate of Mr. Grimke received a check from him for thirty-two dollars upon the county treasurer. Yesterday morning she met Philip Wilson, a colored youth of eighteen summers, in Calhoun street, and he being in some degree her business agent, she gave him the check and told him to collect it for her at once. He went efl, and in about a half hour returned and gave her back tbe check, telling her that he had been to the county treasurer's office and no one was in. About half-past 2 o'clock he came into the office of Major Delany, in the basement of the Fire? proof building, and presented a check, saying he wanted to collect the money at once. Tbe check was the counterpart of the one given him in the morning by Miss Huger, excepting that lt was payable to W. Lawrence. It wa? duly signed by B. F. Poppenheim, and approv? ed on the back by E. Montague Grimke. The writing was, however, bad, and all the signa? tures in the same hand. Major Delany immedi? ately saw that lt was not In the handwriting of Mr. Grimke, and suspect? ing some foul play, took the check and the bearer np to the office- of the county treasurer and auditor. Both of the latter con? firmed his suspicions, and they Immediately carried Wilson dowu before Trial Justice Ma? grath and bad him arrested on the charge of forgery. A full examination waa held in the afternoon, and the signature of Mr. Grimke, indorsed upon the check, was proved not to have been made by him.
