A NEW EVENING PAPER.-The first number
of a new evening paper-The Daily Advertiser
-was Issued yesterday. It disclaims any pur?
pose of entering upon "the hard contested
field ol pokies," and has no ambition to be?
come "the standard-bearer of any political
party or creed," but prc poses to satisfy the
"public greed for news," and to do its best to
be up with every occurrence that may affect
the public interest or excite the public curl

THE WRECKERS' HARVEST_The recent gale
off the Florida coast has supplied that adven?
turous and lawless class known as wreckers
with an unusual run of business. From all
parts of the coast they are swarming to the
eastern shore, and loading themselves dowr
with fie goods, wares ant merchandise cast
upon the beach from the numerous wrecks.
This plundering has been carried to such an
extent, that the agent of the underwriters in
that State has been compelled to call the
United States cavalry Into requisition, and
proposes to search every house on the coast,
.wltu the view of r ecovering the stolen pro?
perty.
BOY THIEVES AT WORK.-Monday night the
store of Mr. Phillp Buchheit, at the northwest
corner ol Meeting and ' 'e streets, was en?
tered by a party of thieves and robbed. They
effected their entrance by climbing in through
the skylight over the door, which had not been
pulled down, and must have been a parly of
boys, as the aperture was too narrow to admit
ot the passage of a man's body through it.
They stole about fifteen dollars in loose ch inge
from the till and carried off every cake in the
Btore. They bad an easy access to the parlor
Igtrora the store, but were evidently deterred
from attempting anything lurther by the noise
of the bakers at their work.

mors are rife concerning the death. When in
the hospital Fuller stated that he had been ac?

further particulars. Since his death it has
come to light that he was shot on a plantation,

TUE HAPPOLDT BURGLARY.
The Prlsonent Examined-July in Hot
Water.
Toby Brown and Sam. Mitchell, alias July, the
black dwarf, lodged in the Guardhouse on the
charge of breaking into and robbing Mr. J. H.
Happokll's store at the corner of Meeting
street and HoiIbeck'.'i alley, were brought be?
fore Trial Jun! ce Levy yesterday morning lor
examination. The prisoners had been confined
In adjoining cells at the Guard h Otis'?, and while
talking had a quarrel, in which they had in?
dulged in several hard threats ngainst each
other.
Mr. Happoklt u-stified as to the robbery and
breaking into lils store, and also identified the
gun found at Wrigai'; house as the gun Btolen
from him.
Thomas Wright testified that, previous to
Thursday, July had promised to lend him a
gun with which to go shooting on Saturday,
and that on Thursday night, about 10 o'clock
ora little after'bell ring," July had brought
him the gua in question and lent it to him.
July contradicted himself several times, and
in various statements, but at last maintained
that he had got the gun from William With?
ers, a colored youth, staying lathe yard 01
Mr. D. T. Corbiu, and that he had carried the
gun to Wright about 7 or 8 o'clock Thursday
evening. Before his Incarceration, July swore
that he got the gun ?rom Toby Brown, but
now denies this, and says that Toby ls the
witness who saw him get it from Wither?.
Toby Brown swore roundly that he never
saw the gun before; had not met July since
the robbery, and knew nothing about the mat?
ter.
William Withers testified that he knew noth?
ing of the gun, and bad not seen July for two
months.
During the examination, it came out that
Withers had two pistols in his possession,
which are supposed to have been stolen In a
former burglary at Mr. Happoklt's store. Under
these circumstances, Toby Brown and William
Withers were held for further examlnation, untll
this matter could be looked into. July, being the
person to whose possession the gun was traced
Urst alter it was stolen, aud who told several
ilifferent stories about it, was committed to
?all In default ol five hundred dollars bail for
irial at the next term of the Court of General
Sessions.
On his way to the jail July became commu?
nicative, and suggested to bis constabulary
escort that he would like very much to have
private rooms at the hotel. This aversion to
company was explained on the arrival of the
party at the jail. July was an old "spot-boy
for the deicCuves, and many of the prisoners
had been caught and sent to Jail by lils aid.
They owed him a grudge not to be forgiven or
forgotten In a hurry, and would have liked no
better fun than to have their diminutive enemy
in their midst. With dwarflike cunning July
bad foreseen this In all its colors, and hence
bis demand lor private rooms, which demand
Became more urgent as he surveyed his glaring
lellow-lodgers. "July,"' Bays the jailor, "I
;uess there would be troubl'. If I lelt you with
the boys;" and much to the chagrin ot the lat?
ter, and to Juli's delight, he was taken up to a
lonely apartment in the tower.

AN IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE SHOE
TRADE.-Shoe dealers desirous of replenishing
their slocks on advantageous terms have now
such an opportunity of doing so as seldom
occurs. Mr. N. A. Hunt will sell at auction
this morning an Immense assortment of goods
in that line, comprising about four thousand
pairs of slightly damaged shoes, as well as a
large fol ol' Iresh and desirable goods. There
tvill be a rare chance for shrewd buyers to get
aargalns. For further particulars we refer
ihose interested to lils advertisement in
mother column of to-day's paper.
A HANDSOME SPIRE.-The spire, which will
Inlsh (he lofty steeple of the new German
Church, is now being made by Mr. C. Werner,
it his iron works in Meeting street, and the
)leces which will form the lower part of lt.
night have been seen yesterday lying in the
rard. Hie whole affair will be fifty feet in
leight, and weigh twenty-five hundred
lounds. At Its juncture with the steeple will
>e a heavy cornice, and from this will rise the
Irst form of the spire, made of iron, and
ihaped like a vase, the outlines being made by
?andsome iron scrolls bulging out at the base,
ind sweeping tastefully up to the neck of the
rase, and then tailing over. The second form
viii be similar to the first but smaller, and
hey succeed each other, lessening In Bize,
intll the full height is attained. The light?
ning rod passes through the centre of these,
ind, coming up through the topmost vase,
viii sustain the vane. This ls lo consist of a
rift arrow ten feet long and beatl fully featber
?d. The whole design is the conception ol'
he venerable artificer himsell, and promises to
lo Justice to his taste and skill. The Iron
icroll work, beaten Into shape by his own
lands, ls delicate but strong, and forms an
mlline at once handsome and tasteful. It
,vas at first intended to place upon the steeple
i heavy carved cornice, but the design, when
Inlshed, f proved too cumbrous. The com?
mittee have now left the matter with Mr.
iVerner, and in good time he will show them
jomething worthy ol' the handsome church
ind bis own art.
