The- petition argues that the property, of Mr. Slidell, sold under the United-States, confiscation act because of his participation In the rebellion, reverted to the heirs of the deceased at his death, subject to his debts, and that Hr. Slidell could not dis? pose- of said property by will or testament. The property that had not actually been con? fiscated, it appears to be admitted, could have been disposed ol by will. The court made an order in compliance with the prayer of the pe? tition, and appointed attorneys to represent the absent heirs of Mr. Slidell. During the week ending last Saturday, , there were Biz deaths from fever, and, since Saturday, we have reports of eleven more, This total of seventeen deaths, in nine or ten days, does not, we repeat, justify any wild excite? ment or violent alarm. A large nnmber of .strangers have gone away. This has the effect of diminishing the field in which the fever would first operate, and where lt might gain strength for an advance all along the line. A great improvement ip the condition < the streets is in progress, and, together with the free use of disinfectants, must tend to keep the disease within reasonable bounds. * We do hope that the people will calm their fehrs, and face the danger, small or great, with manly composure. Part first is an argument directed to show? ing that " we, the people of the South, are " a nation, different and distinct from the j " people of the North," and that " no effort " to bind .us .together by force, can suc "ceed," and that at best "sacha union . *. can only be temporary."
